So I live in Sweden and I just noticed that PS5 is launching for a mighty 5990 SEK, which is what PS3 launched for.
499 USD = 499 EUR = 5990 SEK... How???
I don't even know who to be angry at. My country, Sony, currency conversion, retailers? It just sucks.
And now I seriously fear what the €80 game prices will end up here if €499 is 5990SEK. 1000 SEK for games??
:(

Seems like it will be 529e here in Finland. How much do the US prices get taxes added to them?

PS5 is 4150 DKK in Denmark which is 658 US Dollars. Almost the same price as PS4 when that launched.

US Folk: what, $70 games, damn!!

EU Folk: You think that's bad, we're paying 80€ ($95)

Sweden folk: Hold my beer.

Yes, I know Sweden is EU... just go with it!

The US price doesn't include tax because we are silly like that. Still that's expensive.

Yeah, it's actually closer to $699 and games themselves are $100+. That's a steep price hike.

Is competition priced on similar lines, if yes then it could be a taxation thing for certain goods, if not it's just sad...

In a tax free environment as well (mid east) series X costs $585

That's a price hike of about 25% from the Euro price, right? I don't know if that's unusual or not for a console, but it certainly seems... not good.

What's the price of the Series X?

No, about 15%, if the EUR price is 499€. 5990SEK is about 575€. Still almost 50€ more than in Finland. SEK price converted to USD is 682USD as of today.

I'll m already 100% digital, so I'm actually thinking of just getting myself an US account to buy games from that store instead.
But yeah, it really sucks overall.

Now, this might be totally wrong, but isn't the income in the nordic countries substantially higher than in most of the rest of Europe too?

Same in Norway, but not surprised since prices have been increasing due to the weaker Norwegian kroner. Luckily I can get business price for ordering for my library, but with this retail price I'd rather wait to buy one for myself.

Wait... Xbox series X is 500 NOK cheaper. Definitely a distributor factor.

Middle east it's $585, I am assuming PS5 will roughly be the same but game pricing is variable, in stores you get it for 65$ + for a new launch, if you buy it via the whole vendor route a new launch can be as low as $50

Disc version is 5899 here in Norway ($650). 4799 for digital.

With games costing 700-800kr I probably won't buy them until they go on sale except for maybe a handful per year.

What did the $500 Xbox One launch at in Sweden back in 2013?

Current conversions are around 5,500 SEK inc 25% tax which makes the XSX if 5,695 about right and what the PS5 should be.

Yeah I was surprised the PS5 isn't same price as XSX though since they're both 499 elsewhere. In Norway XSX is 5499 while PS5 is 5990? It's a bit strange.

Komplett has some Sony games up now at 800 so they're going up, but at least not 1000 bad.

In the US, sales tax is imposed at point of sale. That's why, I suppose US prices are lower. We elect to die in the streets rather than have nationalized medicine and we impose sales tax after the fact, while yours is baked in.

€560 + €80 games... yeah, I'm in no hurry to jump on this. I'll enjoy my backlog for months. I can easily afford it, but I have principles and nothing at launch is must-have-now for me.

I got it for 6000

This is related to the tax on chemicals in consumer products, which wasn't around when the ps4 launched. It's adding about 500 kr to the price of consoles, on top of VAT

Isn't the official price without the tax ? Here it costs 612$ when you add the tax . Same price for the series X.

Yes, but even at the highest US total sales tax I could find (13,5%) the EU price is still a little more expensive after conversion. $570 US vs $ 592 EU.

Why is Demon's Souls the same priced as those?

The PS5 is very expensive all across the Nordics. I think it's around 570 euros in Denmark. It appears that Sony has higher prices that the conversion rate for most currencies outside $/£/€.

Because we have higher VAT. In Finland it's 24%. It varies from about 20-27% as far as I know. Might be some countries with lower, but those are rare.

You should just buy it from Amazon.de or .uk
It's what I did, cheaper than buying it locally.

Not only is the PS5 priced at $650+, but most games are also priced at $90+. With that in mind, I don't need a PS5 at launch.

Yes, but that's what I'm saying. VAT is a huge chunk of the price differential. No clue if it's 100%. The US price is much lower because of the fact that VAT is massive and pre-included.

Not the point. I took the highest US sales tax I could find, applied it to $500, then converted €500 to dollar.
You're calculating from 499€ which already has some VAT applied to it to make it more inline what it will cost in different countries. For example in Finland if you don't pay VAT (a business for example), the PS5 is 427€ (506USD as of today). Which is close to the reported 499$ without tax.
