Marvel wasn't outselling DC in the 60's. They didn't overtake DC until the 70's. This crazy stuff was extremely popular with kids.

In the 90s, Supergirl was like a shapeshifter or something and it resulted in this panel:
The "Superman is the last Kryptonian" is one of the biggest self owns in comics history right up there with Brand New Day. It didnt even lead to anything since Superman still grew up in Kansas, had no real connection to Krypton and they constantly just wrote around it.
Every new Super character had to have some weird origin like Superboy being "They tried to clone Superman but couldnt so they had to clone some human and then give him Tactile Telekinesis that basically made it look like he had the same powers as Superman" or "Supergirl is a shapeshifter from another dimension, all those new readers coming in for Death of Superman are in for a surprise".
They had to write around the rule for Krypto, they couldnt just say that Superman's dog is also from Krypton. They had this awesome superman movie that elevated Zod, and they couldnt just use Zod.
The cartoons had to write around this dumb rule too, like how in the cartoon Kara is from a neighboring planet so she's basically Kryptonian but they can say "Hey she wasnt technically from Krypton" then they basically just acted like Kara was really just Superman's cousin.
