Can't tell what's worse: the fact that the majority of slang being listed here originates from the black community, or the fact that the majority of this slang is relatively old and people are just now hearing it.

Where does white slang come from? Where does black slang come from? All slang comes from Era as far as i know.

It ain't just misappropriation it's also late.
But that's the usual. Like the "fortnite" dances it ain't just the vocabular that's being misappropriated it's the culture at large.

I'm a teacher, and so I hear a lot of crazy shit that hasn't even hit era yet.

"Drip" is probably my least favorite. It just sounds icky

We need to make sure we don't veer into casual racism here...or disregard slang that has become accepted and normalized among the lgbt community. Slang is an important part of various marginalized communities. Its easy to be boomers and Say "thats stupid", but try at least to understand the importance and context of certain slang.

edit: yeah this thread has gone full casual racist, lock it up.

Y'all wouldn't know good slang if it hit you in the fuckin' face. Not trying to call out anyone as some racist pieces of shit but man can y'all have some sort of awareness of how bad it looks when all you can list is slang created by colored and LGBTQ communities?

I know it's an easy joke that's already been made, but the only 'slang' that really bugs me IS honestly when people say "cringe."

I also really disliked when people would use "epic" to describe anything they liked.

Aside from that I have no problem with any slang.

Yep, and all the while you're still not invited to the very party your music is being played at. Although it's to the point now that when I see something has made it into gaming circles I just let it go. Like, whatever.

Y'all have this annoying ass thread like every other month using it to complain about a new batch of slang terms that's been used for years by black people. Y'all ain't slick.

Complaining about a word like "drip" when white people were using words like "epic" to describe everything years ago 🙃

I didn't think this would be such a controversial subject.

You gotta think about more than surface level.

Most of these words already got adopted into casual talk but originated from our Culture. This is how we communicate with one another, just because we speak like this amongst ourselves doesn't mean we're incapable of using "proper" English.

When people whine about how slang annoys them, it just sends radar signals to us about having contempt over the way we speak.

Plus this thread legit happens every 3 months. You are no where close to the first person to create this topic on this site.

I like a lot of new slang. Slaps and yeet are current favorites. Lot of fun.

What I hate is when slang word is the opposite of what its supposed to mean. A while back I heard a bunch of kids talking about athletes as being "so cold"

To me, that would mean they suck since we refer to people doing well as being on fire or really hot right now. But I guess cold also means good.

You're really gonna let yourself be out-hipped by this man?

I was recently amazeballed to discover that he is in fact the brother of Rick Bayless, the chef who spent his career promoting authentic Mexican cuisine and was awarded the Order of the Aztec Eaglefor his contributions to the export of Mexican culture.

Thats not the same thing.

No one talks about an athletes performance as being "cool" You can have a cool goal or something but no one says "Lebron was so cool that game" when talking about a big performance,.

Cold means good.

Cool means good.

And why wouldn't somebody say "Lebron was mad cool that game?"

I guess this is the difference when it is your language versus when you're just using to hearing it.

Black culture is cool and it gets appropriated all the time by people who don't necessarily exchange anything for it. This goes back a long time. That's a particular kind of slang use I find annoying - not because I dislike the words, it's people who just pick it up and think it's theirs.

Oh I thought of a few more

Epic

"BTFO"

Incorrectly using "literally" (I'm guilty of this though tbh)

Any variation of "Butthurt"

Edit: Oh wow I didn't notice this thread took that kind of turn. Sorry.

Saying an athlete was mad cool as a indicator of their performance sounds odd to me.

It also doesn't help when I've also heard "cold" being used as an indicator of someone sucking.

If I'm not mistaken, Cold comes outta NY.

It's a basically a synonym for Dope..

You see LeBron play? man was cold all game

Did you see that new movie? damn that joint was cold

Hot and cold are both positive ? Is that how something can suck and blow?

Lol yeah, someone saying something is fire or cold will mean the same thing haha

Cold can also mean physical attraction too

Shorty over there cold af

I really didn't intend this to be a racial/minority slandering thing, nor do I know the exact roots of these words. Also, I didn't think I was the first DigitalOp but I personally don't recall seeing a thread like this. I don't visit Etcetera all that much and barely make threads as it is. Anyway, if mods wanna close it up, go for it. I don't want this to be insulting to other people. I knew where Stan came from, the rest, no idea. Just see 'em used out in the internet world.
