Question:
The Silent Hill HD collection is pretty bad right?

From what I've personally seen, the new voice acting on 3 is so bad and everythinng is so gray on it, it loses it's original quality pretty much.
The only good thing I could see from it is that SH2 kept it's original (and amazing) VA

John at DF did a good video on it:

I stand by the new voice acting in 2. Granted I haven't played it with the new VO since release but I do remember liking it. SH3's new VO though, yikes.

The voice acting is subjective, but the HD Collection is objectively terrible due to being ported by amateurs using unfinished beta code. The games themselves are the only redeeming thing about it. I would argue that it's better to just watch a Let's Play of the proper versions over playing the HD Collection.

I can only take that as a confirmation that the next game is going to be revealed on TGA.

I have no real reverence for 2 and 3, and they were never a part of my childhood, so this isn't nostalgia or fanboyism talking here: the HD collection is heinous.

Hey, Katharsis:
Have you heard anything about SH maybe being cross-gen or do you think it could be?

www.tweaktown.com

PS4 to PS5 transition will take 3 years, more cross-gen games coming

Sony exec Hideaki Nishino says the PS4 to PS5 transition period should last 3 years, and that more cross-gen releases are coming.

Personally, I hope it's been designed from the ground up as a PS5-specific game, but if it was designated to be cross-gen to maximize sales potential I wouldn't be too hurt over that. 😅

Never heard about a PS4 port but it could be possible.

Finished a replay of Silent Hill 4 a couple of days ago, and I'll say that the second half of the game isn't as bad as I thought. It actually has some pretty good stuff. First, it's the point when the hauntings start to happen in Room 302, which is one of the main things people praise about SH4. Also, the Forest and Apartment Worlds have enough things changed that keep them interesting and in fact are better than the first time through. With the Forest World, there is now a thin layer of fog, Walter chases you through several rooms, you learn more about Walter's character from Eileen reading his diary entries, and the Twin Victims make their return after being absent since the Water Prison world in the first half. The Apartment World gets the closest thing in the game to an Otherworld makeover, with the layout, scenery, and music changing and just having a much more ominous atmosphere.

Also, Eileen is extremely easy to ignore once you realize two things. First, never give her a weapon. And second, you can leave her behind in rooms, whether by outrunning her, climbing ladders, or jumping down holes. If you leave her in a room without enemies, than she'll be safe and you're free to go off and kill the monsters in the next rooms without her hindering you. Of course you can't leave her alone for too long or else she'll automatically take damage anyway, but all you have to do is just enter the room she's in and then her "damage timer" resets. And if she does end up getting bloodied, you can heal her with the holy candles anyway.

Something Silent Hill-related is coming to next gen consoles, at least:

I mean, I'm not sure if there's anything else that can be said. Pyramid Head isn't the only Team Silent monster with rape-ish imagery (even outside of Silent Hill 2), and both Sato and Yamaoka explained the pseudo-sexual subtext in the Team Silent games.

Owaku and Ito have also cleared up why Pyramid Head attacks other monsters, and Ito (who built all of his animations and cutscenes) has said point blank: "The scene of Pyramid Head abusing 2 mannequins. That doesn't mean rape. There is no reason to rape the mannequins for PH in the first place. I included that aspect "sexual" in it slightly."

Plus, there is an actual rape monster (the Abstract Daddy) in Silent Hill 2. If we use that as reference, the game spells it out for us that it represents that. Whereas with Pyramid Head, rape or sexual frustration isn't hinted at anywhere in the game. There are only two scenes of him killing monsters and it isn't even anything literally sexual. All of the memos, creator statements, guidebooks, and in-game dialogue only discuss him as a figure of remorse and judgment.

It could be argued that his weapons are phallic symbols, but that was already laughed off by Masahiro Ito. To me, it's obvious that Pyramid Head is in the same boat as Valtiel and not the Abstract Daddy.

To be honest, a vocal portion of internet fanon also has a weird habit of trying to link everything in Silent Hill to sexual frustration. In reality, that's only an aspect of Silent Hill 2 (at least as far as the Team Silent games go) and the only manifestations of that are the Mannequins, Bubble Head Nurse, and Maria.

Other monsters in the game (Lying Figure, Flesh Lips, and the Mandarin) are confirmed to look feminine because they represent Mary on her bed rest (the hallway scene and the "Leave" & "In Water" endings explain why), not because James is horny.

The mannequin scene I can totally see being misread, but I find it very difficult to see the pre-boss cutscene with the lying figure as anything but sexual.

SH3 HD is a trash fire. 2 is okay on PS3 with patches, but definitely not the best version.

And although the scene where Pyramid Head contorts the Lying Figure is reminiscent of fellatio, it can be seen more clearly in Fukuro that no literal sex act occurs (Fukuro is technically in an alternate universe with a different Pyramid Head, but the same scene is re-created). That moan was a death noise, not unlike the Puppet Nurse.

I also beat Silent Hill 4 just recently, for the first in my case.
I have to say I understand why it's so contentious, but I still liked it. A lot of the criticism focuses on the supposed tedium of having to constantly return to the apartment to manage your inventory but I think that's off the mark. You honestly don't have to return that often if you make the effort to travel light, and besides that I found that they did a good job of keeping these visits fresh and interesting with new stuff to discover.
The fundamental issue with this game comes from its increased focus on combat. Much of it just plays like a really janky beat-em-up. And then they had to turn half the game into an escort mission on top of that, which can be kind of circumvented as you said, but that almost highlights how ill-conceived the game design is.
Speaking of AI partners, Silent Hill 4 came out just a couple of months before Half-Life 2 but Eileen seems more like an NPC from Half-Life 1.
That said, I think they got the most essential stuff right. The atmosphere and that slow-burn sense of dread which Team Silent did better than anyone else is all there, the gorgeously well-realized environments are there (it's ridiculous we never got to see what these people could've done with the power of the triple), and the story is there.
In spite of all the jank, just exploring these worlds is still a thrilling experience and that's arguably the most important part of a Silent Hill game.
I also liked the ghosts.

Right now I'm trying to give Silent Hill Origins a shot, but so far my thought is that whoever said this game was better than 4 must've been crazy.
I just made it past the sanitarium which is hands down the worst level of any Silent Hill game I've played. Holy shit at the amount of time you have spend just running back and forth through these enormous damn hallways in the normal world and the otherworld. Now this shit right here is tedious, I could tell it was gonna be bad the moment I saw the map.
I also strongly dislike the combat. This is an area where they clearly tried to innovate and improve on the previous games because it's never been a strong point for the series, but somehow it turned out far worse.
Breakable weapons, awkward combos, QTE-style button mashing events. No thanks. Why does it have to be so weirdly difficult just to deal the finishing blow when the enemy is lying down? That was never a problem before.
Dunno about this one.

Keep in mind that Origins was rebooted and developed extremely quickly.

Katharsis explicitly saying to expect something at the Game Awards has to mean something good though, doesn't it? This is the first time she's told us to watch an event. Every other PS5 event since June has only been riding on her hunches that it would be there. She has never been as unequivocal as she was with that "watch the TGA's" tweet. I mean shit, after all that's happened in the old thread I don't think she'd be this on the nose if she didn't know it was going to be there 100%.

dpanim Despite a few killjoys here, she did say something to that effect with the caveat that she doesn't want to say it is for sure it's there. We still might have to wait for an answer in 2021.

Katharsis seemed skeptical when Roberto first started claiming it would be there, right? 🤷‍♂️

My advice to everyone here: don't expect it to be there.

Wait, are people taking the December thing more seriously than just a "grain of salt" possibility?

I honestly agree. Please don't get the hype train rolling for December. I think KatharsisT is being genuine, but remember:
  • The original window for announcement (between May and the PlayStation 5 launch) has come and gone.
  • The other events were no-shows.
  • This game supposedly began development in 2019.
  • Real world events (coronavirus, protests, election drama, ETC) could easily throw a wrench into everything, even if Sony is planning to announce it at TGA.
Personally, I think it's best to keep our eyes peeled but our expectations on 2021 (at the earliest) if you want to avoid disappointment. Just my thoughts. If it's not announced at TGA, I suspect that there will be a lot of trolling and dispair no matter what, though.

I trust Geoff to do pretty much anything to hype up his show, and I understand it.

But this means nothing, sadly.

Yeah, this really does look like an original horror game to me.

As far as existing properties go, it looks closer to Psycho than anything else:
