More than 10 shrimp and crayfish hatcheries across Taiwan have reported cases of a mysterious new virus from China, resulting in tens of thousands of the crustaceans being culled under the supervision of the Council of Agriculture (COA).
The COA said Wednesday (June 17) that a deadly new virus known as decapod iridescent virus 1 (DIV1) has wreaked havoc on China's shrimp farming industry recently and that it has now spread to Taiwan. Out of the 30 shrimp and crayfish farms where testing has been carried out, more than 10 have been found to have infected crops.
In late April, Japanese media reported that an unknown iridescent virus had re-emerged in China's Guangdong province after being first detected in Fujian province in 2014. Reports pointed out that DIV1 could infect shrimps at all stages of growth and had a mortality rate of 80 percent, according to ETtoday.
At present, scientists have yet to collect enough information about the highly contagious virus, but it is not known to infect humans.

Yeah, you might want to mention that it affects crustaceans and not humans (at this point).

Poor lil guys.

Looks like we're gonna have to teach shrimp how to wear face masks.

I mean, whatever. It doesn't infect humans, we have other bigger problems right now.

(Also that needs to be put in the title)

I like to think that DIV1 has come to fight COVID19 and they cancel each other out, allowing us to live happily ever after.

I have no issues with the thread title. This is still something that can have very real consequences.

How did OP not read their title and think, huh, in the context of humanity experiencing a pandemic maybe I should be more specific?

The coronavirus strain that is COVID-19 was also "not known to infect humans" until it jumped species.

So.

There's that.

Yo, so this is gonna make the jump to humans and cause us to mutate into crustaceans huh?
Isn't there a game like this launching tomorrow?

It has various different sympton on different Crustacean.

On White shrimp(The most commonly farm and eaten one)
Sympton can be seen with normal eye. the shrimp body will turn red, shell body will be soften, stomach and intenstine will be empty, Hepatopancreas be yellow white, normal is brown color.
There is currently no cure, and is extremaly contagious, if one shrimp has it, it is expected to infect the whole pond within 2~3 day
And it has 80% fatality rate.

But it has no effect on Crab, and they don't die.

Dang, that sounds ruinous for the industry. Thanks for the details, hopefully some work can be done to come up with a solution quickly.

Decapod virus sounds sci-fi as hell. Hope this doesn't wreak havoc on the wildlife
