It's bad but yes, the entire plot of XV requires knowing about those events lol

You can but you don't need to. So do it if you feel like it, otherwise if you care enough you can still watch it afterwards.

Yes, but I'd personally argue that the anime is more important, and it's also free to watch on youtube. If you only want to watch one, I'd say to go with the anime.

Kingsglaive will give you important plot that is referenced in the game, but the game is told from the perspective of someone who didn't actually witness the events of Kingsglaive. From that perspective, the movie is more CGI porn than a fundamental part of the experience, while the anime captures the feeling of the actual game, but with more backstory and character interaction moments.

Brotherhood is an extension of what makes the game good, Kingsglaive is a reminder of its flaws.

Watching both is optimal, but if you'll only bother with one, watch the anime.

It helps a bit, yeah...

I wouldn't say it matters too much either way though since I don't think you should be playing XV for the story - you may be rather disappointed if you do.

Of course you should.

FFXV is great now with all the DLCs / Royal edition stuff, but sadly people only remember their first playthrough, and the game was in a rougher state back then.

It's miles better now, enjoy. Went from like a 7 to a 9 for me.

Sure, why not. More context for the game's beginning and overall status quo.

Now, it's about the same quality as Advent Children, so don't go expecting something good. At least, it has some interesting concepts and, unlike AC, it's got some cool designs and art direction.

I literally replayed it through recently, it did not get much better in my eyes.

I'm kind of surprised that people consider it essential. I saw it months after playing the game and didn't feel like it was necessary at all. The game sufficiently explains what happens IMO.

I way prefered the film to the game. Also feels like the two are completely unrelated apart from they shared character and world designs. I found the whole thing completely bizzare.

I seem to remember that when the game was originally released it was pretty important to have watched it before-hand, but they've since patched in a number of extra cutscenes in the early part of the game, some of which are taken directly from the movie so it's not quite so important. It's a pretty good movie, but only as a part of the FFXV experience, so if you're not sure you're going to like XV and play it all t he way through I would be tempted to skip it unless you've got a couple of hours to kill.

Yes unfortunately. Think of it like the longest CGI opening to an FF ever. I think it's pretty good as far as straight to DVD CG movies go,

It's not worth it and also has some plot holes in it. Just read it up in 2 minutes or even ignore that because the game itself doesn't really care what happened there except for a 3 minute "Well we are fucked"

I didn't watch it and don't think I missed anything. The story is fine but by the end I really didn't care about any of it aside from the impact on the 4 main characters themselves.

OP you have a chance to never play FFXV at all, a chance you should take. Have you heard of Final Fantasy XIV? It's got online or something!

Yeah otherwise XV will be more confusing than necessary

I will also agree with others that XV isn't worth it at all for the story so just enjoy the open world bits. The DLC/Royal barely fixes shit outside of giving a few party members a little bit more development.

I will also say the movie is pretty bad if you don't care for pretty cgi action scenes. Those were enough for me to get some enjoyment out of it at least.

Yes, but it really doesn't matter. Even with watching the movie beforehand I found the story of FFXV is a disjointed, god forsaken mess :(

No. It does add some context but not enough to make it worth sitting through how bad it is. It is pretty and has a few fun action sequences, but like most video game multimedia stuff, it's just not very good in general.

I do kinda wonder what the experience of reviewing this was for like non game savvy critics. Must have been one of the worst pieces of shit they ever had to watch.

This is reminding me the multimedia mess that FF15 was, as well as being a bit of a mess of a game...

The movie will help, but don't expect it to magically fix the game's story.

You absolutely* have to play A King's Tale: Final Fantasy XV. It's vital* to the events of the series.

*Disclaimer: I haven't played a single game in the FFXV sub-series and I'm thoroughly talking out of my ass.

Absolutely not. It's awful.

Genuinely can't believe people are recommending you watch it. It adds nothing. FFXV story is a mess anyways. The movie doesn't help untangle it.

The movie makes everything even worse, because it is completely pointless for the main reasons:

The ring and crystal were never in any danger at all. The whole thing was pointless.
Ardyn would have gotten it back regardless with his powers and even if Iedolas gets the ring he would turn into a big fire as soon as he puts on the ring.
Movie also makes Bahamut even be more of an asshole in regards to Comrades. The whole Kingsglaive rebellion thing is...stupid if you take everything into account. The whole multimedia shit is just Bahamuts "script".

It's only worth it if you want to know how Luna (who is completely different here) looks like as an addict.

It's a weird film in the sense it's both vital to understanding the events of FFXV, yet it feels like absolutely no event from the film is referenced in the game.
There's a cool cameo in it, but they do 0 justice to said cameo, so it makes me dislike it even more.

Yes.......and I said that with a heavy sigh because the movie is one of the most expensive mediocre shit I've ever seen. The pacing and editing is truly awful especially in the action set pieces ---- good luck following that Ultros fight.

And I still don't understand why they didn't use the same face as the game when the movie is a CG animation. It's stupid as fuck.

I say this as someone that disliked FFXV to a large degree. Kingsglaive is still of great benefit if you wish for context the game often lacks.

The final 30 minutes was just action schlock, but you will appreciate the first half or so, which sets up the world and events that lead to the game. It practically is a extended opening cutscene despite its own story being trivial on its own.

I still wish they'd put in cut down versions of the DLC stories in the main game. It really makes the story twice as good.

OP, try playing the opening chapter of FFXV first. The movie is important imo, it sort of fulfills the same function as the Midgar prologue of FFVII in setting up the plot. Although there is a weird lack of cohesion between game plot and movie I think, with major characters being almost completely isolated to the film and making maybe a single appearance in the game.

But the movie plot inserts itself somewhere between the events of chapters 1 and 2 of the main game, by that point you should have figured out if FFXV is a game you're even interested in playing.

Anyway I'm glad Square has seemingly dropped the multimedia approach of FFVII and XV cause none of it ever really coalesced into anything that meaningful

It's better if you do, it's like a big intro but don't really help the main story at all.

It was absolutely 100% intended for you to watch it before playing, yes. The anime is best to watch episodes while playing the game as a sort of backstory flashbacks accompaniment. I'd probably give it until mid chapter 2 / 3 to start that.

The movie explains the setting of the game in the first five minutes, which the game never does, and links directly to what happens in the final hours of the game (at least now with the new ending). I would describe it as essential watching and I can't believe anyone would recommend otherwise.

Kingsglaive before playing,
Then:
  • Episode Gladiolus: Chapter 7.
  • Episode Prompto: Chapter 11.
  • Comrades: After Chapter 13, but if you do it prior to Chapter 14 your avatar can be encountered during Chapter 14.
  • Episode Ignis: after clearing the game as it spoils the ending.
  • Episode Ardyn: after clearing the game as it also spoils the ending.

No. It's so boring you'll probably have to watch it at least twice, due to missing large parts because you were reading Resetera or something at the same time :D

The movie has more story and world building than the game.

Hell i enjoyed more the characters in the movie than in the game

I feel like life would be way more fun if I could be as forgiving as you. A 7 for the original version is absolute crazy talk in my eyes.
