Honestly Joe should just switch parties already and stop pretending he's a democrat. Yea it's nice we have the majority but we shouldn't be reliant on a piece of shit like him to maintain the senate. Fuck Joe Manchin.

This is a terrible take. We'd go right back to bills not even getting a vote.

Uh, they don't have all the votes. You'd need to get a Republican to support it if he doesn't.

He'd only make a scene of this if they knew they had the votes across the aisle. Otherwise he could've killed all talk of $2k in December.

Edit: We just saw Susan Collins get reelected in a state that went Biden +9 on the background of shitty performative voting, Manchin has a much higher hill to climb every time he votes.

This idiot will enjoy being the most powerful guy in Washington for the next two years. He better get challenged hard in the 2022 primaries.
That would be impressive given he's not up til 2024. He was primary challenged in 2018 by the way. He won by 39 points, so best of luck to your imaginary liberal Democrat who can win in WV.

I get that but why? Who is he appealing to in this case? The $2000 checks are extremely popular on both sides of the spectrum. Mcconnell not putting them up for a vote is arguable what costed them Georgia. If both Dems and Repubs want it who is he dancing for?
His base, WV, the reddest state in US, someone here points it out, his base love him because they think he is their "Dem check", which makes them feel good. He will pass it, because if he doesn't it political suicide. He wants some pork to show how he still thinks about WV and other dumb shit.

Right. There's only so much stretch you're gonna get. and GA has something WV doesn't: A humongous giant sprawling city/suburb and a huge rural black belt. Warnock would lose in WV. (although maybe him being a rev would help...)

nothing is helping a black man running for office in west virginia

You didn't answer my question.... His constituents WANT this to pass. So why is he acting like he's opposed to it. His schidt works when it's something more polarizing but it makes no sense here...
I did answer your question, either he will vote to pass or republicans will help pass it. The checks are going to pass. But if he's trying to get extra help for WV he can show his constituents that he tried to get them extra aid In addition to $2000. Because if he just went along and voted yes, no one would give WV a second thought.

This is politics people. It sucks but Manchin has no other way than to play his moderate role. Its either entertain his theatrics or give back the Senate to Mitch. Sucks but this is the reality.

WV is NOT going to elect a traditional democrat anytime soon.

This idiot will enjoy being the most powerful guy in Washington for the next two years. He better get challenged hard in the 2022 primaries.
And then have his successor lose by a massive margin against his/her Republican counterpart? C'mon now.

This is fine (for this specific bill). Manchin may not vote for it but there will be Republicans that will. This would have passed if McConnell let it come to a vote, which Schumer will.

I can honestly see a few republicans voting yes if they are in contestable seats, it's hugely popular and will be run 24/7 the next election if they vote no.

Manchin is either playing some game to get a hell of a lot of stuff for his state or he truly doesn't want this shit. Either way, we'll only find out when it comes to a vote and with him I'd rather save my ire for when he actually votes.

This sort of talk from him was always expected. It is who he is. Now how he votes when being bribed is a different matter and I expect him to come through in a number of cases.

Weird he'd take such a public stance on this super minor, super popular thing so long before it is even being brought up. It barely costs the government anything and has immediate, super visible effects.

Look, I am not saying he will switch sides. And I do not want him to because despite everything, he is the difference between a dem majority and McConnel. But, I do wish he was just honest with himself because he's no better than a republican. His only saving grace is the D next to his name. It just sucks the fate of the senate relies on him.

He'll cave.

He's the type who only breaks from the party when his vote isn't actually needed, in order to maintain his street cred.

Reposting from my Poli thread post:

People need to think of Manchin as a sleeper cell agent. He will do anything to stay that way. He will pull the trigger on a hostage while whispering (I'm sorry) in their ear. All so when the moment comes, he can open the gate for the invasion.

If he's doing this, there are likely GOP votes. Stop believing Manchin facade if you want to stay sane. He's doing what he needs to to stay alive as a senator in fucking West Virginia. He'll be there when we need him most.

We're gonna need a stickied "Who is Joe Manchin" post with how many times we're gonna have to explain his deal. To recap:

Manchin is the Democrat senator for West Virginia. West Virginia is crimson blood red. No Democrat is winning West Virginia. We like having Manchin because he's the only Democrat that'll ever keep seated in current West Virginia.

He's not Joe Lieberman, he's Susan Collins. He'll be the conservative Dem who whines about how "radically left" the other Dems are, then someone will do some talking and Manchin will vote on the party line. We play this game because it's the game that keeps Manchin elected. It's arguably because other Republicans are calling for $2000 checks (because Trump did) that Manchin feels he has room to play it. The pork will only go so far, he'll ultimately chain us from going full-progressive, but so will other blue-dog Dems; he's just the furthest down the chain.

We'll see where this goes when shit gets called. He's already given himself an out with "focusing on the vaccine first".

I thought he was elected in 2010 and two terms would be 2022. 2010 was a special election, but hey at least you were able to take a shot at me so there's that.

Republicans just have to say socialism and fiscal responsibility and their base will nod their heads and say yes, those are the important things right now. Which is why they cheer for tax cuts for the rich and businesses. Why they cheer for cutting services that they themselves rely on. Why they constantly vote against their own interests.

I'll be glad if I'm wrong though.
I've been lurking on some subreddits lately for the Schadenfreude and many of those lunatics agree that it's ridiculous that the COVID relief hasn't been passed.

I guess we'd only need ONE Republican if Manchin really did vote no, but are Republicans on board anymore now that they lose the GA seats and Trump is gone?

Is this even a popular stance to take? I know he both sides basically everything in order to stay elected in WV, but are there really that many republican voters who are against getting paid 2k more money? I feel like it's a universally liked idea..

I don't understand. I get that he's in a red state, but does it REALLY hurt his reelection chances to give his own people more money? I guarantee your R constituency wants it.

Lol fuck Manchin, but if he's the sole holdout on this it's very possible (honestly, even likely) that he could get pressured into giving up his public position here. The $2000 checks is a popular proposal, it's arguably a Trump proposal, and he would look like a fuckhead to his constituents in MAGAland, WV if he was the only person standing in the way of it coming to fruition.

I'll get my feathers ruffled if he's staying stone with this tone once this shit's on the Senate floor.

I really thought his statement is more towards a 2K only bill and not towards a package (that includes a 2K check) that would also put some bigger money for money for his state among other things.

Dont think this is a nail in the coffin, especially since, only one republican needs to vote over.

and always, keep the faith and hope,

never forget how many people swore there'd be 0 checks ever again, and that both ga seats would go to republicans...

Manchin doesn't have his usual leverage here, given that his reelection lines up with the 2024 general. Also, there will undoubtedly be some Republicans even sort of interested in entertaining the idea of 2k checks, and Schumer and Biden of all people should know how to work the room. Beefy state aid and 2k checks are definitely within range, it's a winner in pretty much every state.

turns out, a lot of people like getting money.

He's either

a. Holding out for extra money in the bill for his state, once that happens he'll vote for it
b. Not going to vote for it, because he knows there's enough GOP votes for it to pass

We're almost certainly getting the 2k checks

When the $2,000 bill passes will you guys promise not to do this the next time Manchin makes his opposition to something super public when it only makes sense if he wasn't needed (or will change his vote for a new Ferris wheel in Morgantown)? Oh you won't. Okay then.

Great fucking system we have where someone who represents a state with 0.5% of the country's population can single handedly tank an overwhelmingly popular bill

Edit: If this is just a negotiating tactic for WV aid then fine but I'm just getting flashbacks to Lieberman with ACA which pisses me off

"Absolutely not. No. Getting people vaccinated, that's job No. 1," Manchin said in an interview with The Washington Post when asked if he would support a new round of checks.

"How is the money that we invest now going to help us best to get jobs back and get people employed? And I can't tell you that sending another check out is gonna do that to a person that's already got a check," Manchin added.

could not be any more tone deaf. "Everyone should still have like $1150 left from the last check!"

Remember USA. This is why you can't have anything nice. Winning the Georgia seats was only the first step thats lets you dethrone Mitch for the time being. But you still wont be able pass anything worthwhile, while you still got Conservatives hiding out in the Democratic party not voting the party line.

Now if the Senate Dems had a stronger leader than Schumer, they would get this dipshit in line so his words would be as hollow as Susan Collins' "concern".

Can't wait for Manchin to desperately fight against DC & PR statehood. Man likely has no power if that happens!

DC statehood arguably benefits him. With power comes pressure - as much as he can get Schumer to kiss his butt, all eyes are also on him whenever he plays DINO. Bringing in DC statehood guarantees a slight majority which gives him breathing room to be the DINO - he can object more freely knowing his vote is slightly less critical. And he can play the game of objecting so that he keep whatever base he has in WV happy.

PR statehood is only the same if we get two Dem senators out of it, something far less guaranteed in conservative PR.

Schumer isn't even Majority Leader yet, let alone brought up this for a vote and you're declaring he is too weak.

He most likely wants to negotiate some stuffs, but if that were the case why not just talk to the minority leader instead of making a show of it. I bet some people in GA were voting because they wanted relief and this dude just pulled the rug underneath them.

Will all the repiblicans that that were for the $2000 checks still going to vote yes ?

Time for Biden to reach across tbe aisle.

50 /50 was never a guaranteed majority to be able to pass everyhing they want. Hopefully Dens can win a better number in '22.

i like how you're in the thread where one democrat is being a PoS and you're saying if the checks don't come through you won't trust dems

even though you know exactly the one reason why it might not come through

that said if dems don't deliver in the next few years i'm over it. i'm already ticked that black people are saving the nation by voting for them only for them to want to hold hands with the party full of people that would target us first

Excuse me? You need to back up

I've been defending Democrats throughout this entire campaign. I think people who blame Pelosi for everything are misguided and Republicans are traitors who need to be held accountable and expelled from Congress.

If Democrats promised we'd get $2k checks, I would like to think they know that every Senator Democrat would pass that bill. They know people are STARVING right now and thousands of them would have never even voted if it weren't on that promise. I said I will lose trust in them IF they fail to have this on lock. I'm hoping this is all playing politics and in the final hour they'll pass it or get another Republican on board.

However, if they can't get it done, people will feel betrayed. Rightfully so. For me, I'll always end up voting Democrat because my surival depends on it, but if people told Dems to kick rocks? I wouldn't blame them. It's time we held leaders accountable. Don't make promises you cannot keep.
