Played for about 20 mins this morning. Super impressed so far! The combat feels really good, better than Bloodborne! Reminds me so much of when I played Ninja Gaiden for xbox so many years ago. Enemies feel dangerous and smart.

Of course I've already died like 10 times lol

Fuck this game is so god damn intense. I only died once and to the first mini boss? I think its the first mini boss... no idea but holy shit you got to pay attention to so many things with the combat it is insane.
I had to stop after a couple of hours to let my brain settle.

How is the environment/boss variety thus far? Seeing nothing but snowy plains in trailers and reviews had me a bit concerned.

Anyone else getting audio issues on PC?

The cut scenes are muted in some scenes, like if the source of the sound is far away form the camera, then the sound is super low.

Also in combat, i barely can hear my parry sounds or my sword swinging. When i insta-kill an enemy, the sound is super loud.

Switching the audio output to my headphones doesn't have the same problem, but i want to play with my speakers. With the current issues though, the off-audio is really breaking my immersion.

God, someone please help me not suck in this game.
I've beaten Souls games before, but I'm having a hard time getting used to the combat in this.

Also, game is AMAZING so far.

I was on the fence whether to get this game, after seeing comments like this, I'm going to pass.

Ive downed 3 bosses and none of it has felt cheap or unfair. Theres a million comments of people loving the game as well, so take those into consideration as well. Some people get frustrated when they lose and call things cheap when they are not

Defeated
Corrupted Monk
. I definitely shouldn't be here but the way to there was one of the best experiences I have had ever in a souls game. Defeated him as my 4th boss and damn this was one hell of an uphill battle, maybe you are supposed to get here with some ability or just way later because this was a parryfest for like 12minutes straight with very little room for error.

One big issue I have with this game is that I don't know when I'm fighting a boss or a mini-boss. I'll easily destroy a mini-boss only to discover that it was meant to be an actual boss. Other From games made it really obvious when you were fighting a boss with the fuckhuge health bar at the bottom.

Any tips for fighting: (early-ish game boss spoiler)

The normal enemies are very easy.... Makes you feel like the most badass Ninja ever.... Now the two life enemies and bosses are pretty hard

Mini bosses in this game are as hard as Bloodborne's crow hunter to me. I haven't even encountered the first real boss yet...

Because most reviewers obviously didn't get far. Boss variety is great, environment variety is closer to Bloodborne than Dark Souls. The first areas are same-ish or more cohesive, to be fair, but I've seen only four.

Thanks, I don't have fire crackers tho.

I think you can buy them at the vendor in the first area where the bell lady and the crows are.

Stay in close: I was hopping over his head endlessly but it rarely opens him up for an attack. Hug his flanks instead, keep him turning circles and land hits in ones and twos. If he does break away, bait him towards a wall. Hop over his head and keep circling him.

So what's the best use for sen? I've got about 1k but am wary about dying with that much or blowing it on spirit emblems (already have over 100). I'm having trouble finding vendors aside from the one

right before the ogre area

If anyone's aware of other early vendors, please spoiler reply here :)

I'm at the Oger an honestly a bit mad because they pull of the same animation-tracking-instant-turning thing, when dodging, they did in Bloodborne and Dark Souls. Highly frustrating, especially when you think for a split second you avoided the hit, the enemy then skip frames and is magically at your angle. Not cool.
Yeaaaa.... Kinda wish they would patch this

ooh boy. More and more visible spoilers are being posted now. I think I'm going to bounce from this thread for the weekend.

sorry I actually meant to edit that old post..
check this instead.. sorry for the confusion,..

Here is the official description.. Spoilered

Thanks, but that doesn't really answer my question. The idol you start with lets you automatically go back to your last checkpoint. Does using that after resurrecting count as a "true death" or whatever would have a chance to add dragon rot?

I want to really emphasize to people struggling when they start out, do not cheese encounters early game. If you arent going to learn here good luck later in the game when such options wont be as readily available.

I find it super weird how easy it is to cheese the game at times.
I also still have no idea what to do with money after ~5 hours so dying feels pretty meaningless. Which isn't unappreciated to be honest.

There's two vendors right by the ogre area - one in the ogre area itself. They sell some worthwhile bits. They also sell money bags, which is a good way to covert spare coin into savings that you can't lose ;)

Early game vendors:
After the first boss in the castle area. Hard to miss.
At the old lady checkpoint, the thief.
Above the thief where the crows are.
Carp vendor at Hirata Estate, near the start, small island.

Buy all pouches. Buy all limited items. And it's always good to buy the ressource for the prothectics. Later you also can buy upgrade materials at the thief.

It made the tutorial boss click for me, and honestly the rest of the game so far. This is an instance where running my head against a wall really helped.

I got him the very next try and can do it now pretty flawlessly. But this failure was much more visually pleasing imo. I said it already but the weight behind the combat in this type of back and forth is something I've not experienced before.

How did you try him again...? I lost, cutscene, game starts. You can try him again?

And thanks for that video and explanation, always good to see a different perspective.

Beat my first real boss on the first try. The
general on the big horse. Firecrackers and the grappling hook attack skill made that pretty easy.

Played a bit of the starting area. The game feels really good, love the parrying, it's definitely more Bloodborne than Souls.

It absolutely will. The primary differences between Sekiro and the previous games is that defense has two components instead of one. Whereas previously proper timing is all that's required, Sekiro needs proper defense choice (not necessarily ideal) and timing. The other is that deflect being primary defensive mechanism also means that the mechanical limit set by recovery speed of a dodge roll is removed, so attacks are coming in higher volume and faster, but volume alone doesn't make it harder to defend against, although it may have the mirage of being so. Once you know the move, defending it is the same as any other, just more button presses.

On that point, I don't know if it has been mentioned or if this is completely accurate, but from my time with the game so far it looks like you can't get posture broken by enemy deflection, only when you fail to perfect deflect an attack. On several enemies I've been at full bar and not broken. This is important because it means when your back against the wall, you want to keep pushing forward, not back off (where you are more likely to get clipped by various follow up moves)

This game is insane. Difficulty is much higher than Soulsborne imo. I struggled against the Shinobi Hunter, still can't get the hang of the Mikiri (?) countermove. When do I need to hit B? In the training area, I hit them every time, but that Hunter beat my ass. Killed him and there's no better feeling

Dang, I've been planning to buy this game for months but after reading the last 10 pages of this thread....maybe I'll wait a week or two for the release hype to die down. I've been burned too many times. I am not in the mood to spend my weekend being pissed off at a game.

And thanks for that video and explanation, always good to see a different perspective.

I made a copy of the save file prior to fighting him, then just copy it over the live file when I fail, so I didn't have to redo the tutorial level to fight him.

Another thing to note is in that video, there is an example of countering without deflecting. If you know a move, its effective range, and where the target position is, you can use dodge to reposition to give more time to set up a larger counter attack (which at this point is just a charged r1). So think outside of the given defensive mechanics when trying to figure out counterattack options. You can create a lot more openings when you know the moveset. In the clip I did it at :31 (hit), :50 (whiff on bad position, where hitbox porn worked against me), and several more. Incidentally, that's the move I also died to.

Any tips for the
Shinobi Hunter in Hirata Estates? I can clear the enemies around him okay but he's just a pain the ass afterwards even with the counter.

I was on the fence whether to get this game, after seeing comments like this, I'm going to pass.

Just remember that "cheap" is often a word which people use to try to diminish their own liability for playing poorly. I have not encountered a single thing I would label "cheap" during my time with the game so far.

As long as you don't allow your ego to get the best of you, I assume you won't find much "cheap" in this game either.

*edit*
I just saw your previous comments about Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3. This game isn't going to be for you, man.

This game!

So far it's not that hard, I'm two hours in - the only Souls game I played before has been Dark Souls for around 8 hours.
So far, I'm playing this as a stealth game. The indicators are not perfect, but good enough and it's so much fun to split a patrol up with some ash, take one out, vanish to the top of the buildings and repeat until no one is left. It's been relatively linear so far and I just cleaned up the first outpost with 8-10 guards including a Hammer guy. I'm still bad at normal fighting, so I try to be death from above most of the time.

Most of the time there has also been a stealth path to take the most dangerous enemy out first.

3 deaths so far, atmosphere and visuals are fantastic, gameplay is too. I'm just really far away from being a natural with using the shoulder buttons for attacks.
Playing this on PC with a 970, 8GB RAM and an SSD on a i5-4460 - Everything on high, rock solid 60FPS.

Perfect to hear! This is almost my same situation including my setup except that I'm on a 4430 lol.

So uh.... I hope this is ok to ask as I don't know whats considered to be alright....

Is using a trainer for this (steam version) a bannable offense?

I would imagine as a singleplayer game, we should be able to do any modding/trainers we see fit?

soooo yeah this isn't great. it's pretty clear From got out of their depth with more intricate combat and the stealth part isn't particularly well implemented either.

the movement is sticky, hitboxes are frequently jank, and in general it's not super fun.
