For me, it's much better than all the Souls style games. I love it a lot.

These threads always kind of bum me out. I love Dark Souls and I love Sekiro. So I see people going "Sekiro is awesome" and I nod along, and then they add "so much better than boring retreads like Dark Souls 3" and I shake my head. Then I see people going "No, Dark Souls is amazing" or "Bloodborne is a masterpiece" and I nod along, then I see "unlike Sekiro which is so boring and repetitive" and I shake my head again.

Here's my damn ranking and I'll die on that hill, dammit:

Demon's Souls = Dark Souls = Dark Souls 2 = Dark Souls 3 = Bloodborne = Sekiro

Sekiro is up there in terms of games from last gen. Animation and verticality it is From's best game, however, the combat is basically a block/parry rhythm game. Mind you the window for the parry is very generous when compared to other Souls games.

Bloodborne with it's atmosphere, lore, and comabt is still the best FromSoft has made (wishing for the next gen upgrade patch. Sekiro will be next on the list with how it tried to innovate exploration with verticality, and fresh take on combat. Follow by Dark Souls 3 which is the culmination of all Souls games mechanic and world building.

It'll be interesting to see what form of combat evolution and world building Elden Ring will provide.

I loved the game. I haven't beaten it yet because I got stuck on a boss and lacked the time to invest into getting good but I am planning to return once I get a PS5.

With that said, this game isn't a souls game. Once you get over this you will enjoy it more. The game is a character action game with some similarities. That's it.

I am glad for that personally. From making souls games without breaks could lead to worse games.

I actually agree completely. I think they're all absolutely awesome games and while I get why people might not love all of them like I do I have a difficult time understanding how you could love one but absolutely hate another.

They're all different of course but I also think they all have similar DNA at their core. And that DNA is incredible.

Sekiro makes the other From games feel low budget in comparison (PS5 remake aside)

Bloodborne felt janky when I revisited it after beating Sekiro a few times

Fully agree, OP. But it's not a Souls game, so in a sense I wasn't really part of the target audience.

If they ever decide to make another on like this, I'll know to avoid it.

I'm firmly Bloodborne > Dark Souls 3 > Sekiro.

I didn't hate Sekiro, but I didn't love it either. Still a good game, but I like the build variety and core gameplay of the other games a fair bit better. I think it's great that they made Sekiro though, as to not simply do the same formula over and over with a different skin/story.

Sekiro was the best first playthrough. Very different from other Souls games so kinda weird to compare. I think it's my favorite of the 3 due to how fresh it was.

god tier: demons souls, dark souls, bloodborne, sekiro
bad tier: dark souls 2, dark souls 3

note how the bad ones have a number behind them. It's that simple.

Quite the opposite for me. It's by far my favorite From game. Although I physically can't play Bloodborne because of the frame-skipping thing, so maybe that one would be better. I guess I'll never know.

I just meant making the last hit more cinematic rather than a boss with 1 hp left getting barely scratched as the killing blow.

I mean when I finally beat Orphan of Kos in Bloodborne, I did it via a last ditch effort parry when I had 0 blood vials left and maybe a quarter of my health, and it remains the single most cinematic moment in From's entire catalogue and feels better because I earned that moment through my decision making.

I'm not sure what this has to do with death blows? I've had fights that ended like that in many of the souls games, including Sekiro. That moment of triumph still occurs when the boss keels over ready for the final blow. I felt that sense of rush and relief several times in Sekiro (more than any of the other games, probably because the stress of the posture damage healing as you're trying to push them over the edge... although I wouldn't want the posture aspect to bleed over to the other games of course).

Your other point about casters is valid. Maybe they could implement a way to do ranged death blows in different ways.

I bought Sekiro recently and I'm loving it. I feel like Dark Souls 3 was a low point in the series - they dropped the magic system from the first two games that I really liked for a more generic MP system & combat in Dark Souls 3 is a lot faster-paced than the other Dark Souls games while not feeling designed for it like it is in Bloodborne & Sekiro.

Dark Souls 1, Bloodborne, and Sekiro all felt like legitimate sequels/spin-offs, whereas Dark Souls 2 & 3 felt more like expansion packs.

I agree with most of your critcisms OP, but I still have hard time deciding which I weigh as the best of the 3 - Sekiro or BB. The boss combat in Sekiro is just so delicious and addictive. The levels do feel linear but I'm not sure how many of the games actually have that nice shortcut/loopback we all think about - DS1 and BB in places, otherwise, no? I haven't played Ghost of Tsushima so can't compare, but areas like Ashina, Fountainhead and Kongo are gorgeous, if with a sheen of high contrast unreality that maybe GoT trumps because it goes for more realism?

Certainly of the three, DS3 has the least gushable combat, that 'dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, dodge, chance an attack or wait for stamina bar to fill up again' loop gets on my nerves.

All three games put other series and games to shame, Fantastic games.

My ranking:
1- Bloodborne: Top 10 of all times to me, Miyazaki + lovercraft = best thing that happened to me.

2- Dark Souls 3: i dont know why, but i fell in love with it and finished it 4 times, the setting was fantastic.

3- Sekiro: Souls game with new coat of paint and loved every moment of it.

The ranking should be as per below:
BLOODBORNE > SEKIRO=DS3

It's not what I want from a Souls game and I didn't enjoy it very much. Well, tbf, it's not a Souls game, but maybe that's what I expected from From.
Stopped playing it halfway through multiple times...

Comparing an action adventure game to an RPG is unfair. Of course Sekiro will have less build variety and more focused build. It's not an RPG like BB or DS3.

It's not a souls game. Don't treat it as such.

Hmm, I'm not sure I see much of a comparison to Arkham combat, tbh.
It is not the same Combat but it has the same Philosophy behind it. During Battles you are not allowed to respond to an Enemies Action any other way than what the Developer intends for that specific Action.
In Batman Games you have Enemies with yellow, red and blue counter marks, Sekiro has the same thing with the Mikiri Counter, jumping and deflect.
Batman Arkham actually even offers you some more choice by allowing you to make certain decisions mid combat while your combo counter is high enough. Sekiro has the tools, but they are far too limited and way to specific for certain situations and enemies to really add any choice or depth to the combat.

Sekiro is faar harder but the combat philosophy and depth of both Games is on a similar level. I could never play Sekiro purely for the combat and i think exploration got severly hampered by stripping the game of all the Souls RPG Aspects, because instead of new Gear or new Weapons you always find some Candy in hidden places which is just less satisfying.

You are wrong, sekiro ist the best game of the three because no other game lets you go stealth by stabbing an enemy in a cloud of blood. It also has the best final boss. And it breaks a little bit with the story is told by items which is great for everybody who is not vaati.

Tsushima isn't about realism really. It's also really high contrast but compared to sekiro it comes off as a more subdued fantastical setting. There's nothing like Fountainhead in the game but the main Buddhist temple in Tsushima is just as striking as Senpou and Mount Kongo.

Because none of those rankings are for me:

Bloodborne > Sekiro > Dark Souls 2.

Sekiro is a fantastic game pnly slightly beaten out by Bloodborne. And Dark Souls 2 is a fantastic game as well.

In Souls areas loop around the bonfire providing shortcuts but in Sekiro areas loop around encounters providing different approaches. Not to mention the grappling hook and how many options it provides and also the fact that the game has more open spaces than the others.

I vastly prefer Sekiro.

Subdued that's the word :) - The questionmark was to denote I didn't really know what I was talking about, outside a few screenshots and trailer I haven't seen much of GoT.

I haven't gotten that far into Sekiro but I think it's pretty solid so far as a straight up action game. I would take it any day over Dark Souls II's circus of bad mechanics, bad level design, bad controls, and bad graphics.

For me it's the best game From Soft have made since AC4A.

Sekiro is their best game, In all honesty I think Bloodborne is massively overrated on this forum, its a great game but I didn't think it was any better than DS3.

My favorite From game after Bloodborne and only because I find the lore and world of that game so gripping. The gameplay in Sekiro is fantastic and I love the added mobility and more vertical level design. Going back to Souls feels really limiting.

Sekiro's levels and bosses feel like two completely different games.

You have the levels, which highly encourage mobility, player choice, and stealth. Then you have the bosses, which throw literally all of that out the window and force you to fight in one very specific and defensive way or eat shit.

Combine that with forgettable level design and a bland atmosphere, and Sekiro is very easily my least favorite modern Fromsoft game, and the only one I never bothered to finish.
