There is no persistent ship right now, you just unlock cosmetics which can be quickly applied to the ship you are given at the start of each session.

Hmm I don't really like that. What an odd design choice. The game seems very community driven. Why wouldnt they make a GAAS title where you have some type of progression path. Do you still find it rewarding? Or should I just treat the game as a much more casual experience

For me, I find it extremely rewarding to narrowly escape a dangerous situation and this game is full of them. Getting through some of the emergent encounters between other players or AI can be harrowing and quite skill-intensive. Especially when your ship is full of treasure or you're at a high emissary level. Getting better at navigating the world is, to me, much more satisfying than a multiplayer loot game with numbers that magically make me take down enemies quicker. Not to say those games aren't fun in their own right, but that's pretty much the opposite of what Sea of Thieves is going for and it's a huge breath of fresh air for me.

I also typically alternate playing solo or with 1-2 friends at a time of varying skills, and not being gated from anything by an arbitrary number or worrying about level scaling is nice in that scenario. We can jump in, decide what to do, and wait for everything to inevitably go wrong when we get greedy. Or other times, we go 2-3 hours without seeing another ship and have a peaceful time sailing. I really enjoy that level of randomness that keeps you on your toes. It does frustrate me when I hear people say the game requires no skill, because it absolutely does if you plan on keeping your treasure consistently. But I also have a friend who doesn't really care about that stuff and we mostly go around fishing and sinking ships. There's plenty of valid ways to play and you kinda just decide what you care about doing. I've played 200ish hours and have only done one fort, but I've completed most Tall Tales several times and leveled most factions close to 50.

This all sounds awesome. So the loot is worth something then right?

It's worth gold that buys you stuff, cosmetic stuff. It's not worth '+3 muskets'. What it's really worth is the time, effort and story you put in to get it, and the fun/rage/crazy/dull moments that it took to acquire and cash in. That's where SoT shines and why, personally, I think it deserves a lot of praise (even as it's clearly not to everyone's tastes): it absolutely emphasises story over stats, at all times in all places.

Whats really interesting to me 2 years in, I find the progression "better" than i would in other games but I think its still a hard sell for most people who don't quite get the "flat progression"; you don't get better weapons, *you* become better.

I remember we used to always to a hard handbrake with the ship or usually always slam into the island we're visiting. Now we tease the sails up and come to a stop naturally. I think what really helped it the most was the precious cargo with the Merchants. I'd really like to see them expand on that with other rare cargo like, a crate/barrel of fish, or having to deliver a ship full of gunpowder barrels lmfao

I feel like I have to unlearn all my gaming habits I'll give it a good shot. So you just go to Ghaleon Bay to grab your quests right? Also what's up with the ship choices in adventure mode? Is there a reason I want a big ship? It will mostly just be the two of us

If it's just the two of you, a sloop will be perfect. Biggers ships just accomodate more players, basically, but come with the perks that brings like more cannons. However, two players would be hard pressed to control a galleon that is designed for four players.

When solo or duo, I always pick the sloop.

Also you can get quests from any outpost that the game starts you at, unless you want a specific Tall Tale, which is the game's story mode.

Few things as satisfying as watching a reaper ship alter course and start pursuing you, only for you to board their ship, drop their anchor, and have your crew just blast the hell out of their ship.

Sometimes you get a emergent quest to deliver gunpowder. But there used to be a time limited Duke voyage that tasked you with digging up and delivering kegs.

Pretty explosive times.

Gunpowder's best delivered to enemy ships rather than the merchant alliance tho
Ever since they added fire and the masts breaking I rarely ever have them on the ship anymore.

I will sometimes carry one in case of emergency but as soon as another ship is within boarding/sniping/cannon range I am getting rid of it. Its often more of a liability than an asset.

Hey, with great power comes great something or other! I dunno, I couldn't hear the end of it, what with the exploding gunpowder barrel and all

The ships are built around their max player count. A galleon is intended for four players, a brigantine for three, a sloop for two.
A crew of players well versed in the game can handle the larger boats in smaller player groups effective enough to consider the tradeoffs of picking a larger boat than their crewsize. For example, a brigantine is faster and starts with more supplies than the sloop so a solo or duo group might consider it at the risk of the random monster encounters being tougher because they're skewed for three players.

Gotcha. I would imagine in a sloop you want to avoid most combat encounters right?

Against other players in larger ships, sure, at least at first, and largely just because learning how to avoid/evade is pretty useful. Once you and your sailing partner have things pretty figured out though, a sloop can be pretty deadly. I still generally seek to avoid fighting player galleons in a sloop if I can, but will otherwise engage most things if my supply levels are sufficient.

Man, I had so much fun last night. So, me and a buddy completed our first stronghold. It took forever, because we didn't know any strats or what to do exactly. After we completed it, we got a ton of loot. It took forever loading it onto our sloop. On my final run, I get back to the ship and see another playing just standing there. "Is this your ship?", he asked. I say "Yes, it is". "License and registration please". I laughed so hard I forgot we had so much loot. As we sailed away, he proceeded to ask more questions when suddenly a Ghost Ship appeared. This unknown dude didn't think twice and started shooting the ghost ship, eventually sinking it while me and my buddy repaired the ship. He then helped us put the loot on our sloop and escorted us to the nearest outpost, where we got 50K gold and a lot of reputation and doubloons.

Actually can't remember having so much fun in an online game. Thanks Inferno, wherever you are.

Been following the numbers on SteamDB. CAU seems to be around 10k and slowly rising!

steamdb.info

Sea of Thieves · AppID: 1172620

Sea of Thieves offers the essential pirate experience, from sailing and fighting to exploring and looting – everything you need to live the pirate life and become a legend in your own right. With no set roles, you have complete freedom to approach the world, and other players, however you...

I know those numbers will very likely drastically fall after the first month or so, but still. (We also don't know how many of those are double dippers...)

I doubt it. Sea of Thieves endures. I can see it staying at 20-30 k long term if it picks up enough steam.

There is now a "translate other players" option in the accessibility settings. Curious to see how well that works. I can't recall ever seeing this setting in a game before.

We decided to warm up with a couple of arena games, did super well overall, then went into adventure mode and proceeded to get wrecked in every pvp encounter we got into. Alright then

I'll bet they throw more of those into the rotation as time goes on. So glad they added checkpoints.
On that note....

Pro tip for everyone. Try to have the Shores of Gold in your inventory. If you're ever in a pinch and getting chased you can just activate it, get the shroudbreaker, and sail away into the red sea.

Also I'm pretty sure the shroudbreaker only works for the part of the red sea around the shores of gold area (NE Corner) but I don't know for sure.

correct!

while you cant use the shroudbreaker for it, the bottom eastern corner where the old world meets the roar is pretty good for ropeadoping people if youve got a decent cursed cannonball collection to trap your prey (anchor, ballast, maybe a barrel to make sure they cant repair if their pockets are empty) while you tank the hits cutting across the shroud corner from one region into another (obviously you'll need enough planks for when you return to blue ocean)

Hey guys, just a couple of questions:

- the only persistent thing is the player character right? The ship is always a new one?
- are they planning on adding custom persistent ships?
- the world is always online right? So I can find other players randomly while sailing?

Characters and cosmetics. That's for ships, player, weapons and tools. Every time you start or sink you get a new one but there is a box where you apply your cosmetics to it quickly so the persist is for a ship is cosmetic.
Always online with up to 24 players per randomly generated server. The number of ships is determined by the crew sizes.

VERDICT: He was heading to an active Fort when a skeleton sloop popped up so he tried to ram them. He had the barrels stacked on the spar by that point, and none of them blew up on impact, so he shot them, which did sink the skeleton sloop but also sunk him. He was all JUST AS PLANNED and hopped into his rowboat to collect the skelly loot, but then could not find it, and also lost his rowboat. He also did not know which direction the nearest outpost was.

I will let you draw your own conclusions.
