Obligitatory 56k warning!

Time to bring it back! This thread is to showcase the best in retro display tech, specifically CRT scanlines. While it's all well and good playing retro titles in flawless 1080p/4k on your newfangled displays, there's nothing quite like what a CRT offers in terms of variance, vibrance and authenticity.

Some good references for retro display technology with regards to games consoles:

https://www.resetera.com/threads/retro-av-thread-ot-rgb-crts-upscalers-and-more.1139/ - Resetera's Retro AV Thread

Other great resources:

Shmups forum: MAME HLSL CRT SCANLINE EMULATION PRESETS

Fudohs website:

Downsampling/Scanlines Demystified

Deinterlacing, Scaling, Processing

Anyway - to the thread! There's some ground rules here, just to make things nicer for us all:

  1. No emulator shots unless they are photographed on a CRT. There was a specific thread for that on the old board, so I'm guessing there will be one here too.
  2. Name what console and display you are using in the shot
  3. Ten maximum per post (lets see if this is too hopeful).
I'll start off with a few shots of my own JVC TM-H1950CG broadcast CRT that I added an RGB input to. All consoles (AV Famicom, Saturn, Mega Drive, SFC Jr) connected via RGB SCART.

Beautiful shots!
Here's a quick and dirty pic I took a while back to show a friend this curious doll in Wild Arms.
PS1 via RGB SCART on a Panasonic TX-29AL10P (a regular old CRT TV that unfortunately has quite a bit of warping).

Stealth edit:
Almost a year after taking this shot I had an opportunity to buy some PVM-s. I would have never thought it would happen here, in eastern EU, so late after CRT-s went out of use. I really love them and now I finally got around to making some comparison shots of the same room, with the same (iPad) camera.

PSOne via RGB SCART on a JVC TM-H1750C (IRL looks more colourful):

Awesome! What CRT and systems are those?

I find that imgur works fine as long as you use http links and not https. I'm using abload though anyway as compression isn't an issue there.

I use a PVM-20M4U. The systems are Master System, Genesis, Genesis, Sega CD, Genesis.

Looks great. I was on the verge of buying the same model last year but decided against it at the last minute due to cost. It's interesting to see how much of a variance there is between the Sony aperture grill CRT design and the JVC shadow mask design. Your PVM looks more natural and blends a bit better whereas my JVC is ridiculously sharp to the point of it looking like a PC monitor.

Are emulator screenshots also prohibited when said emulator is connected to a CRT using RGB at 15khz? It looks the exact same as a real system. For example, there is no visible difference when comparing MAME to my Neo-Geo on the same CRT. Many arcade games never received proper console ports, and it would be pretty cool to see some of them captured on CRTs.

As long as it's a photo of a CRT display then it's fine! This thread is about showcasing what analogue displays have to offer, no matter what the input.

I've posted a lot of my screenshots in the crtgaming reddit over the past year, but I'd figure I would now share some here since I was never able to before. Hope you enjoy!

Sony Trinitron KV21LS30U RGB SCART picture from RBG Modded (PC10 PPU) Famicom

The LS30U range of TV's were the very last 4:3 ratio Trinitrons released by Sony for UK retail, manufactured here in the UK. Slight convergence problems on my tube but this is just consumer grade stuff. It's my daily player TV so I would like something better but me and this range of TV's go back a long way. Super sentimental.

Gah, that game looks so awesome but it's so expensive.

Yeah I don't think I could justify spending as much on it as it is now. It's gone crazy. I've had to curtail my spending recently as prices are going silly. Glad I picked up a lot of stuff in the early 2000s. Some Saturn games seem to have tripled or more in price in just the last few years.

Some games haven't gone up in price at all though!

Like: Street Fighter Zero 2

(Saturn, RGB Scart, KV-21X5U again)

Here's a few I took a while back.

Thunder Force IV and Outrun 2019 on the Genesis. Hooked up to a Framemeister over RGB.

And Super R-Type on the SNES. RGB to the Framemeister in the first shot, and RGB into my CRT in the second.

Something differnt.
Used my OSSC and the post processing Scanlines on my PAL GameCube.
Still figuring out what setting is best for which console and game and how I can
implement scanlines in video capturing without having makroblocks.

Great thread, sorry about my pics they were the old stuff I had before they were put in storage, I will be reviving the old equipment up at some point when I redo my home cinema lounge ..

B&O MX4000 CRTs (horizontal and Tate) , PCs running WinXP and Groovymame plus calamity ATI crt drivers at 240p through ultimate vga to scart converter

Will upgrade this to small netboxes plus win 7 groovymame / CRT drivers and arcade cabinet if wife allows...

Guys I got a PVM 2130QM from Work yesterday. The boss told me it had been used only ever a handful of times (for a doctor classroom, I work in a hospital) and that I could have it since it was going out in the bin otherwise.

I figured it might be good for Retro Games since I heard a lot about PVMs.

It's this one: http://www.the-block.org/equipment/sony-cube-21/

Sony_2130_Front-1920x1670.png

My question, is it good? I don't know where to start with these things.

Do I go pure RGB cable? I also have an XRGB-Mini but obviously that won't be used with this. Would this be better than the mini?

thats a damn old set. i think late 80s? i had the 25 inch variant but mine was not in great shape (color was off and picture was slightly blurry). Plus it was heavy as hell.

So that line of monitor left a bad impression on me even though i know it was likely due to age, constant use and probably failing components.

For yours though, since that one is probably in much much better shape then mine, it should be a very good monitor. i believe all of the models from that line used db25 connectors for RGB
