So apparently to hit 1TB, these are 96 layer 3D QLC chips, which is not great for running Windows, but perfectly fine for the (relatively) slow MicroSD standard. So because they don't have to shrink the die, capacity changes aren't locked to whenever the next 7 billion dollar factory opens. There is a race to ramp up to 512 layers (5TB) but the tech involved is not trivial, so instead expect 128 next year and then 160/192 thereafter.

2TB is definitely in play a year from now, but it seems more likely we see one of the manufacturers jump to 1.5 and everybody else wait on 2TB the following year.

Here's a question - will Sandisk/Samsung go straight to 2TB or are we going to get intermediate sizes, like 1.2TB or 1.5TB, etc?

Never mind. My question got answered.

I'll never wrap my head around how we can store so much data in those tiny chips. Can someone tell me how many that is in Libraries of Alexandria ?

Just wait a few months on this. Seriously. The prices of these cards tank so hard. It might be under $200 before fall.

I've almost filled my 400gb card so a 1TB sounds super nice about now. Hopefully it drops down to ~$200-$250 during the holidays.

I wonder if we'll see microSD support as a form of expandable storage on next gen of consoles. It would be really nice, and while far away from SSDs, good cards are better than any mechanical drive.

I answered above, but the wildcards here are:

  • Die shrinks: obviously if a fab opens up with an even smaller process, the amount of terabits/wafer goes up and you get more storage per layer.
  • Layer Process: So the tech gets a lot more complicated above 96 layers, and while all the money is invested in ramping up right now, there may be Intel-like slowdowns especially as it goes from 256 towards 512.
I wonder if we'll see microSD support as a form of expandable storage on next gen of consoles. It would be really nice, and while far away from SSDs, good cards are better than any mechanical drive.

Honestly, I'm not sure about that. QLC cuts down SSD longevity and performance yet again, and SD is already well below SSD is latency and longevity. For now I would treat these cards as skyscrapers of data storage, but with elevators, not race-cars, to seek and transfer the data.

Is that right? I thought the Vita only supported proprietary cards. The more you know.

(In my defense, I haven't used a Vita in ages.)

Out of the box, you can only use Vita's propriertary cards, but these days you can hack your Vita to use SD cards instead.

Don't know if you can still safely open the PS Store once you've hacked your Vita, though.

I bought a 400gb microSD SanDisk around september, it cost me US$300 or so, the same card now is like US$100.
I can manage to fit stuff in there until 1tb is cheaper.

Makes me wonder if the Switcj revision will support higher than 2TB
I compulsively buy a lot eShop games (around 70 digital + DLC + Updates), furthermore and store homebrew stuff in my 400gb card, still my SD is only less than 2/3 filled. However I have big sized games in physical format because the space in expensive on Switch.

I think 2TB would be useful for digital only peps.

I haven't googled it yet, but how many devices can even handle an SD card of that size besides the Switch? I can already see people buying this expensive cards just to realize they can't use them for now.

Any device that supports SDXC?

As long as you format it correctly, you should be good up to 2TB. The only devices with problems should be ones that have arbitrary hardcaps in their code, like maybe (?) the Nintendo DSi which converts terabytes into blocks. Overhead will get high depending on the filesystem though.

Might be needed for a hypothetical PS4 Portable or Switch 2, but can't see any reason to own this right now.

Thanks for the reply, since I'm not an expert in the matter. And makes sense, just recently discovered that properly formated you can fit a 64GB card in a 3DS, silly me bought only a 32GB one since that was the limit in the manual, haha.

The price will go down around december, same thing happened with 400gb cards, no reason to buy it day 1.

Impressive, but curious on how reliable the large storage in a small size medium to last and how safe the data inside for a long term before the card has a chance to corrupt.
Even my Sandisk 64GB corrupted in my phone after 2 years of usage. And if this 1TB card used for data streaming for games and photos/videos capture, I just hope it can last long.

On Switch it's read cycle most of the time, you can set save screenshots and clips to be stored on internal memory, saves are stored in internal too by default.

Some of y'all about to eat on Black Friday 2021

Always wait for Black Friday sales on sd cards. They always drop heavily in price

Not very? QLC reliability is 1/10th of MLC, and they use SLC caching to try and make up the difference. But an Intel QLC SSD last year (512GB) qualified for 100TB of writes, or about 200:1. MicroSD has wear levelling (and a lot of layers to help) but ultimately isn't near as good as a multi-chip array with DRAM. So ballpark guess? 100:1 (100TB), but I don't have any concrete info on that...still pretty good, but not enough that I would use it as a windows install drive...

Are we ever going to hit a ceiling for a card that size? I mean surely there has to be some sort of physical limit to how much data you can cram in a card that small?

I'll keep my 200GB one I have for the Switch for now, but when this bad boy gets 60-70% cheaper I'm in.

If I downloaded all games I have for Switch I'm well over 200GB so I'm just picking and choosing what I want installed at the moment. Will be great to just have them all available eventually.

The current theoretical ceiling is about 5TB for 3D/4D QLC NAND, which is 512 layers. More layers might be possible, and die shrinks could multiply the terabits per wafer, so it's hard to say if things will stabilize at 5TB or 10TB or beyond next decade.

The only thing we know for sure is that future phones and devices will need to switch from SDXC to SDUC to support those bigger cards. (UC supports 2TB-128TB)

So, when can we expect the next paradigm shift in SD cards that increases bandwidth and read speeds? These things are getting so big but transferring that much data to them (even if you're upgrading from the 400GB) is ridiculous.

Got a new SD card, Jill, clear my schedule this week.

Nice to see, that means it might actually be affordable in a few years.

Not that I'm close to filling either my Switch or 3DS.

I filled up my 400gb card and have had to delete a lot of stuff I'd rather keep around (RIP Doom and LA Noire), so I'm not sure if I'll even wait for a price drop on this. I hate feeling held back by storage space.
