So I think I already know the answer but I've got to try anyway. Can you switch to japanese subtitles in the english version of the game? This may sound weird but it's because I just recently made the change of playing games only in japanese as part of my language learning process. I just recently finished the first game in my vita and I found the VN style works fantastic as immersion material, plus I am now a fan of the series and I would love to support it. I also looked at the option of buying the game digitally through the jp store but it's much more expensive.

Why do we think the game underperformed in Japan? New cast? Not an overt VN? Animal Crossing?

It was a PlayStation 4 exclusive at a time when the PlayStation 4 is losing relevance in the Japanese market in favour of the Nintendo Switch. It doesn't help that the original combat mechanics were completely discarded for a new battle system. Little thing like that makes a big difference.

Unfortunately no there is no such option in this version, only if you buy the japanese one
I bought the japanese version and more or less it was an easy read.

Oh well, guess I'm going to wait for some discount in the jp store. In the meantime I'm going to keep playing the rest of the series. Thanks for the help!

25 battle sims done & it just hit me how redundant the "chapter 5 Sakura" one is considering YOU HAVE TO PLAY AS HER FOR STORY REASONS. Meaning she will always be part of the team, so why in the world is there a challenge all about having her as part of your team?

I can tolerate replaying the demon stages, but the tournament is getting so tedious, especially when I randomly get an A because I didn't deal enough damage so I have to replay the mission again, skipping cutscenes, mashing through dialogue, & redoing LIPS scenes.

Edit: Hmm, weird, did I miss something? I've maxed out Claris & Hatsuho's trust, but I can't trigger their team attack, nor unlocked them (or Anastasia) in koi-koi.

I can't get S rank with Claris in the Final Chapter. Someone end my misery lmfao

Try to break as many boxes and crystals as you can in order to quickly max out you affinity gauge and deal more damage with Claris.
Also keep in mind that every character has a move with R2+triangle which can be very useful in certain situations.
Claris's move for example is a tornado which is pretty strong and deals a lot of damage.
Another very powerful move is X(jump)+Hold Triangle so if you use them I think you'll be fine.

Also for the final boss
Try to always hit his hand when he's stunned and keep your team attack until this battle, don't use it before

I concur. Believe it or not, it was with Claris that I beat the final boss the quickest. What I did (aside from Eien's prior to the boss battle) were as follows:
  1. Take control of Claris
  2. Target the main boss
  3. Move to the opposite end of the field
  4. Do a double-jump
  5. Attack the boss with Claris' triangle attack (the one where she summons multiple tornadoes)
This staggers the boss soooo quickly. His hand will fall down on the field giving you an opportunity to strike hard. Switch to Kamiyama and use his super attack (square button) and just go wild. If that doesn't KO him then you only need to switch back to Claris and rinse-repeat. Don't forget to use your team-up attack with Claris if you've unlocked that for her.
Good luck on getting that S Rank! :)

Is there a canonical choice of which girl you choose for the story or does it really work regardless of the pick?

I'd assume Sakura is the canon choice?

So this has always been a heated discussion among the community because in each ST game the main heroine is always the one on the cover, but every fan
considers the girl they choose their own canonical choice.
So developers of the game have always been saying that there is no actual canon girl and I don't think they'll be following the Sakura route
in any other media but of course Sakura is gonna get pushed more than the other girls.

Jesus christ.

After like 6 or 7 rounds of koi-koi, Margarethe has 4 mon & I have 3. Final card of the round SURPRISE BITCH, 4 PAIRS FORMED, THAT'S 17 MON, MORE THAN WHAT YOU BOTH STARTED WITH.

Other rounds, yeah no, you don't get the change to make matches for 4 turns in a row, enjoy your loss.

But then for some reason, when I do a rematch, luck is always on my side & it only takes like 3 rounds. Guess the game doesn't want me to win on my first attempt, especially with characters you have to unlock via paying mon.

I'm starting to hate how luck based this feels even knowing what I should be keeping an eye out for & what hands I should be making

It is certainly more of a "casino" type card game then a strategy card game. Think of poker, gin, etc. Luck is a major factor. I doubt the game stacks the deck because I have had runs where my opponent beats me handily 2 or 3 matches in a row. I have also thumped a few opponents the first time I faced them where it seems I could get three-lights, poetry-ribbons or blue ribbons with barely any effort lol.

Lol, Sakura isn't my favorite of the girls(I do like her though) , but she's very clearly the Canon choice. It's practically her story haha. It's a bit funny to me they act like it's not.

In SST it is true that they pushed Sakura a lot but it's been the first time that they've done it to that extend.
The only other game that can be compared but still doesn't reach the same push was ST2, so I was talking having in mind the series
in general and not just the new game.

Yeah, it's the first game with a new cast and they kind of had to establish her as the new Sakura and how she is key in the over-all story. I know it can be annoying for some, but this is how the first game was as well with Shinguji Sakura. But I trust that they'd give the other girls more time to shine in the sequel like they did in ST2. So it doesn't bother me much, personally.

On the final chapter & all I think about is how much I gotta replay 4 more times to get everyone's ending. Not to mention ANOTHER 4 times for the battle sim stuff. That means that's a minimum of 9 times you're playing through the ch. 7 stage (assuming you got S rank your first attempts for the sim) & I'm assuming the ch. 8 stage as well.

Meanwhile, seeing those trademarks, what're the chances they remake one of the older games using this engine?

You don't necessarily have to play it from the very beginning to get all the endings. As long as you are in good standing with all the girls, you can make a separate save file before you make you choice for vice-commander. You'll get the ending of whoever you pick at that point so you just need to finish it from there. Once done, load your original save and pick another girl as your vice-captain. Rinse-repeat until you get all their endings. Hope that helps!

As for the new trademarks, I cannot honestly say that SEGA would remake the old games with the new engine. But that's just me being cautious, really. I want to see that happen, but I'd be perfectly fine if they at least localize ST 1-4 so I can really understand what's going on. Haha! SEGA will have their financial disclosure in a few hours and hopefully we'll get some info there on how the game performed inand outside Japan. Here's hoping for good news!

Yeah, I made a save right at that point...which happens to be right before you play another action stage in ch. 7. That's more what I was referring to, along with the fact you still gotta replay those stages in the battle sim with different characters.

It's not even hard (I get a S rank like 95% of the time), it's more just tedious than anything when paired with having to skip a bunch of cutscenes as well.

Oh, right. Yeah, that's the tedious part if you want to platinum the game. What I did was to play the Battle Bot during the weekdays when I don't have much time to play an entire episode. They do need to remove the cutscenes when you're on Battle Bot though. Having to manually skip or mash X to speed up the conversation is rather annoying. Have you filled out SEGA's feedback form yet? Sounds like a good one to pass to the devs.

I tend to wait to finish a game or at least close to it, but I might as well mention that in their survey. Is there a link aside from accessing it via PS4?

At least I don't have to do the tournament ones anymore, those were perhaps the most annoying for me since I would get an A for one character & had to replay it once again. It's always "damage dealt" that I seem to be the most inconsistent with.

Cool, filled it out. I liked how they asked "hey, did you play Project X Zone", which was probably the way I was mainly exposed to the series despite knowing about it previously. I also forgot there was a ton of anime releases for the series.

Edit: Wait, so ch. 6 battle bot fights....automatically skip all the cutscenes. & this didn't apply to the previous chapters....why?

Edit: BAH, I missed two bromides, but they're right at the beginning of ch. 2 & 3, thankfully. Shouldn't be too bad. Do wish you could unlock a chapter select.

Getting the bromides on New Game + is so easy as they're already marked on the map. :D So you may want to consider that, too.

Oh? So it's looking like two play throughs is enough for a Plat?
If you follow a guide & make a save at a certain point in ch. 7, then one playthrough is enough as long as you load from said point at ch. 7 since you'll need to pick a girl & see each of their endings.

Also found out I never got Claris' team attack due to not choosing her in ch. 3 nor in ch. 7. Maybe that's why I haven't gotten her in Koi Koi yet.

Edit: oh come on, so after ch. 6 & both of ch. 7's battle sim fights having no cutscenes, ch. 8 goes back to "have fun rewatching all these cutscenes again" mode.

Edit: WHY THE HELL IS KAORU SO HARD TO BEAT IN KOI-KOI

That's what I'm doing now, yeah. Like Zonic mentioned below, you could do it in one playthrough but that's if you're following a guide. I personally don't like that so I finished my first playthough without using one. On the second, I noticed that there are small white rectangles on the map so I investigated. Turned out that they were for the bromides. So I would personally suggest two playthroughs then just make a save file before choosing your vice-captain and use that to get the ending of all the other girls. If I'm not mistaken, the trust levels from your first playthrough are carried over to NG+ so that will really make it very easy for you.

Edit: WHY THE HELL IS KAORU SO HARD TO BEAT IN KOI-KOI

I beat Kaoru on my first attempt, actually. But then again, I've been playing Koi Koi from the previous games so I've had some practice I guess. XD

So as someone who doesnt play anime games is this game worth 60 bucks?

I've played a lot of anime games in my life. This stands among the most anime games I've ever played. If you weren't interested in that kind of thing, I dunno if the price tag would ever be at a good point tbh.

Sega posted an AMV of Sakura's theme song with english lyrics

For me personally that's the weakest out of all the songs in the game, especially if you consider that it's
the theme song of the main heroine.

Here's Shinguji Sakura's theme song in comparison, one of my all time favorite ST songs

What's funny is that afterwards, I managed to beat Reiji, Komachi, Itsuki, and Hiromi all on my first try. Now I have to grind to unlock the last two but I forgot how much harder it is on Showdown difficulty.....only to beat Komachi on my first attempt after 3 or 4 rounds. Ah well, least only 2 more opponents before I've beaten them all.

Edit: took a while to figure out how to NG+ & thank goodness, you can hide tutorial windows. Plus I guess now's a good time to try out the bonus costumes.

Finally had time to start this up. Glad I played the first game when the fan translation released earlier this year, there's so many references already.

Chapter 1 feels kinda odd though.. Like the dude in the green mech just beats the hell out of Sakura and they just shrug it off afterward like nothing happened??

Aside from that's it's pretty great so far. Already liking the musou combat better than the old SRPG combat. Just wish the game wouldn't constantly interrupt the flow of combat though. You really don't need to pause and move the camera to zoom in on enemies spawning, I can already see them in front of me.

I just finished watching Episode 7 of the anime and fair warning everyone, this is the first episode that actually contained spoilers regarding the new game.
So for anyone that watches the anime without having finished the game first (even though it is a sequel) be very careful!

Should I go for the heart scenes with characters I don't really want to have a romance with? Is it better to skip the scenes than doing them and turning the girls down? I felt a little bad when
Claris pushed herself (literally) on me and I had to shout at her.
I don't intend to platinum this.

If you are worried about being a player or a cheater then don't worry. You commit to a relationship later in the game and you can play the routes as a "friend" instead of a "lover".

Hedgehog Engine & the art-style pretty good when you see it with your own eyes.

Previously, I'm concerned that the characters are somewhat 'oily' to look at.

Last stage scenario was absolutely hilarious.

You basically spend the entirety of the stage preparing to weaken the boss while he stands there and yells variations of empty threats at you over and over.

Yeah if you missed a bromide, the only way to get it again is through NG+.
As for your second question I'm not quite sure what you mean but if you also missed a bromide in the shop they reset so you can get the one you missed
rather quickly

I think it's better to do it in 2 nights because chapter 7 is a lot more story/cutscene focused compared to the other chapters and the whole thing becomes a
roller coaster so it might tire you.
Chapter 8 is a lot smaller but it's better to be played when you are relaxed.

In total I'm not sure how much time it takes but it's probably like 4-5 hours or something.

So as long as there is no Sakura Wars Community thread and in order to keep the interest here
I'm thinking about posting some trivia about the series, from time to time, that newcomers especially would probably find interesting.

Newcomers who finished the game at one point they would have probably thought something like this : "What if there was a game like that but the roles were opposite?" meaning what if the protagonist was female and all of the Hanagumi members were male.
Well....they already tried something like that and it was called "Sakura Wars: Kanadegumi", not surprising if you consider the fact that in Japan a significant
portion of the SW fanbase are female.
Sakura Wars: Kanadegumi was a spin-off of the Sakura Taisen series where the story takes place in Tokyo and follows a girl named Miyabi Neko and her interactions with five attractive young men.
In this series there are no Mecha and the Kanadegumi fights enemies with their music instruments instead!

This started off as a manga series, bundled with a small OVA and then later Sega also produced a stage show too.
Here are 2 PVs, one for the stage show and another for the series main theme song.

Unfortunately the series never took off like the games did so they didn't continue it and of course no games were produced out of it.

I hope you found this info interesting!

Think I mentioned it before, but thanks to this game, I found out they have model kits based on the 2nd game & then next month, this game. I'll probably order Kamiyama's mech soon. I will say, even before playing the games, I always kind of liked the mech designs, so it's cool to see them in model form. Here's Ichiro's mech from SW2 & you can also get one based on Sakura. You can even slide the front out to reveal the cockpit & see Ichiro inside.

Yay, finished!

+ Loved most of the characters. Hatsuho remained my one true love throughout, but the others mostly grew on me. I put Anastasia in Kohran's dress so she was a bit less ridiculous, but still, she's like someone turned the boob slider to max in a character creator. Claris obviously improved right away, but I felt she kind of fell into obscurity after that. Azami became a great character, really well done with her scenario. Sakura was fine, although she stole Hatsuho's scenario.
+ The music! Even though they reuse Gekitei6 over and over, it's always hype. I was super hyped when they started playing
Kiseki no Kane
, it's my favourite of the series. Just a shame that none of the songs (except the ending) really played out entirely during the game. Is the soundtrack on Itunes? I'd get an import, but I'd rather not put anything else in international shipping unless I have to.
+ The graphics are stunning for a title like this. Even though they sometimes skimp on the voice acting and there are some scenes with just stills, there's still a ton of unique animations, and it's all super well done. The locations look just like high quality anime backdrops.
+ I actually liked the battles. I don't mind the difficulty as I'd rather not replay stuff like this. It was hype to just activate a super and tear through the bosses. I don't seem to have unlocked any team supers.
+ Even though I didn't really play the first games, it was hype to have Sumire back.
+ Loved seeing my Paris revue pals in bromides all over.

-
I'm assuming they're saving it for a sequel, but it's a shame that we never saw the original revues. I'd have liked a glimpse, just to show that they're alive, and then they are swallowed by the other dimension again. They could really easily use Hakushu as an entryway to explore the other world as a specific mission to bring them back, now that the team is confident enough.
- Why not design a full team of three per revue?

=
I assumed that there were only four revues and that there'd be just two matches, that Berlin would beat London. But as it turned out, there were others that weren't shown at all. Moscow was one. Do Paris and New York have replacement squads as well? Are any others known in the lore?
= Xiaolong really was an asshole in that scene, and it was weird that we just went to his restaurant after that and were all "give us all your food, you cool chef you".
= Were there any hidden responses in LIPS (by waiting)? I didn't notice any but tended to answer quickly.
=
For all the hype of the Moon Division, I forget if they even did anything.
= Sega needs to produce Hatsuho Cider.
