I know we don't have much recruitment info but is there maybe a japanese wiki I could just use Google translate on? Getting super stressed not knowing whether I can get someone I'd like more later by passing someone up early on.

I don't know exactly, maybe someone else can help you out here.

I compiled a table with Spark Rates, which shows what tech you can spark by using which techs on which weapon upgrade path and their probabilities. There are two sets of probabilities (probA and probB), of which I've taken the first one now. I don't know what the difference is or how the probabilities are calculated exactly, so please use the probabilities as some kind of ballpark. 60 is more likely to spark than 10.
My intuition is that the second probability is the probability to spark given a previous spark from that tech, because the devs have said that sparking a 2nd tech from a tech is less likely than sparking a 1st.

I certainly didn't expect a sidequest about

Bigfoot, poor Mondo lmao

This game can be hilarious when it wants.

So how different are the quests where you are doing a different character's "plot"? For Balmaint's early diversion, I did the Earth Serpent and it was like a 30 minute quest. For his later chunk I'm doing Scarlet Shards, and this is like a multiple-hour journey across a bunch of zones.

It seems really inconsistent that one of the arcs is super short and another is huge. Does it matter which is 1st or 2nd, as well?

Urpina's Earth Serpent sequence seemed to go on for a while since you're on a fairly linear procession, but her Scarlet Shard quest was just quickly bopping from location to location until I ran into a bug that made me unable to complete it because I can't trigger the Shard in the Nomad area, which also prevents me from getting the shard in Hibernia, which by all accounts seems to have some actual story for Urpina

I do know that everybody's main quest is long, but I'm wondering how different Urpina's Shards quest is from Balmaint's Shards quest.

Leo's is totally different in all regards.

Playing this *very* slowly, just made it to Azuhchan (sp?) in Urpina's storyline.

How many of the Earth Serpents should be I killing? I've only killed one so far.

I can compare Balmaint and Taria's shard quests. Don't know how much it matters, but I ended up choosing to do the shard quest first for both characters.

Balmaint's shard quest was much shorter, just three specific areas with the final one connecting back to his story. Taria's was longer and while Sasha would say to go to a certain area next, you could do the quest in any order and in any area where a shard appeared. Makes sense though as Balmaint's scenario is far more linear and story driven than Taria's. The outcome for both was also very different.

I would say most if not all. Depending on the area you can trigger some fun battles or interesting world state changes by defeating them.

How necessary is it to get the best weapons/items to finish the game? Because I'm sure I already missed a few of them.

Definitely enjoying this unique rpg. Prob my biggest surprise this year.

You dont need any particular weapon or item to beat the final boss. I would try forging up to the best or second/third best tier of equipment for your core party though.

I remember how strange the first details about this game sounded around the japanese release, investing all in its world map and battles, but now that I'm playing it i'm even more amazed by how surprisinglly well it works. It feels nice to have an RPG that you can play in short bursts like this one, and it can be done thanks to how straightforward it is, with the world beeing like an enormous board game that manages to surprise the player in the most simple but effective way possible.

The only SaGa title that I played prior to this was Romancing 2 (I didn't finish it, but I invested around 10 hours on it or so), so I knew more or less the basics of its combat system, but man, I really love what they made with the turn system in this one. The mechanics around the position of each character and enemy, and how it can affect each other actions, makes each battle feel like some sort of anticipation puzzle, it's refreshing how the smallest change in the enemy squad and how they distribute at the start of the battle makes you approach it with totally different priorities.

The versions of some of the events in Leonard's scenario are just great, particularly the spirit event in Cerenaif. In general I just love how it's almost like MST3king the game with the way Leo and Lissa talk and behave.

That's interesting. I did Balmaint's shard quest second and it was longer. I did three shards, went to a fourth area but couldn't figure out how to do it and/or couldn't because of what did there in a Bal chapter, then left the zone and...

was given the option to give up on the quest, which led to a boss fight against the woman escorting me.

So it sounds like there's good variance between characters and whether you are doing that quest first or second.

I'm not a prolific poster, but I wanted to thank everyone here for shining a spotlight on this gem. Not simply just in terms of finding out about the game (Square smh), but by explaining some of the basic mechanics.

I am not too far into it yet in Urpina's path (just got Elysed). However, I can already tell that this is a game that is going to stick with me for a long time. The combat systems is strategic without a ton of moving pieces or fluff. Obviously, I would prefer some of the systems to be explained a little clearer (in particular the BR system).

This is probably the first game that I've found so little explanation/discussion of systems anywhere online, and I play a lot of smaller indie games. Baffling.

So in Marchiam Bicynera there's this weird event where a girl in town talks about stuff falling from the sky. So I go there, and encounter fiends, a chest, a box, a bottle. And do it again. I don't know if anything ever changes but it strikes me as odd. I'm gonna keep exploring for now but this event... it confuses me.

That quest can to repeat up to 7 times. It's one of the ways to get a curved long sword early.

Leonard playthrough done. I never finished that one in Japanese, and I really, really loved the alternate take on all of the events. The writing for Leonard and Lissa was just excellent, and their versions of all of the events were often hilarious.

I got this game last saturday and have been having a blast, quiz gave me Urpina which was for the best.

Learning the new combat rules to this game made me nostalgic to the time when I was a kid and first rented SaGa Frontier.....so weird yet so much fun to learn!

I just got dual wielding for Urpina, and recruited the two characters for that area which are Chichi and Griffin .

So my question is......is there anything I can do about the roaming hunter in that area? I feel like I can trigger something with him but im not sure how or what.

Yes.

Every battle progresses time in that particular zone by one step. You'll notice that they move around, and on certain 'days' the traps will be triggered. You have the option of going to the traps to let the (possible) fairy out. If you don't let it out, and progress time so that the hunters go to the trap, check it, and leave, then you will find that they deposit a bottled fairy in their belongings. Once you see that, you can then fight the hunters.

Just barely started this up and fought my first couple of battles. I feel pretty overwhelmed by all the mechanics and configurable stuff dropped on you at once. But I'm going to stick with it. I can definitely feel there is an interesting game here.

At the moment the main thing I feel I don't understand is what the different stats do. I notice the game has been gradually adding tips so maybe that will come up at some point.

Other than that my first impression is that the music is really good. And I like the writing a lot.

I don't know what the fuck I am doing or what I'm supposed to do but this game must the best awesome/budget ratio ever.

Could use some pointers with Leonard I followed hints about the fabled city to the north but I'm getting my shit wrecked at the fight pointed at when using the shard.

EDIT : I did upgrade equipements as possible, got to lvl2 with smiths

Attributes are explained in some detail in the Tips section, yeah. I'd heavily recommend going and reading all the Tips available right now if you can. It'll really help get your head around the game.

Sucks that the game will never get a patch. There's a bunch of totally mislabeled quests-- a "Normal" mission at the end of a sequence that you can't continue from that is pretty much a total blowout (4 enemies that deal significantly more damage than the final boss)

The game's pretty great, but still fairly niche I think. It can be really slow and frustrating, and QOL and polish issues are going to push it outside of what many people can tolerate.

I know this is a Saga thread but I have around $20 to spend on the eshop. Should I get this or Star Ocean? Ocean is a remake of an old game and SaGa seems to be out of the ordinary. I can go either way right now. So whats the better experience?

They are two completely different sorts of RPGs.

SaGa is very different from most RPGs folks consider as conventional but is still amazing if you give chance for the combat mechanics to grow on and understand it's open and freeform nature in how to handle quests and what you want to do.

If you are familiar with the Tales series know that Star Ocean shares some similarities. At its core Star Ocean originated from the same folks that developed Tales of Phantasia and split off and formed their own studio afterwards.

SaGa probably has more replay value since it's nature warrants multiple playthroughs with the different characters, unlike Star Ocean which is a more traditional affair with set beginning and end, the only difference mind you is some recruitable characters that gives you an A or B choice, but ultimately the same experience.

If you had the money I'd say get both, but if you must choose one of them, keep in mind a lot of folks here will recommend you pick up Scarlet Grace and I agree, however you need to keep an open mind that SaGa's mechanics and play style is very different then the contemporary RPG but definitely an enjoyable experience. I am a huge tri-Ace fan, and part of me wants to just out and recommend Star Ocean because it's a much simpler RPG to pick and play.

Having just finished SO last night (the first time I've beaten the remake, and the first time I've beaten any form of SO1 since 2004) and still playing through SaGa, personally I lean towards recommending SaGa.

SO is perfectly good comfort food in terms of how it's so structurally familiar, but it's not a particularly great remake and its flaws become increasingly apparent towards the back half of the game. SaGa will require more effort to get into, but it's more rewarding, meatier, and does more interesting things in the long run.

Obviously in this thread, Scarlet Grace.
However, do keep in mind that Star Ocean 1 is still merely Star Ocean 1. It was really a proof of concept of how far the SFC could be pushed, and as a game it remains a bit.... meh. Especially if you're familiar with Star Ocean 2, which is everything SO1 could have been and then some, SO1 doesn't have much to offer.

Yeah, and, honestly, remaking SO1 within the framework of SO2 ended up exposing even more of SO1's issues than they would have if this release of the game had just been the SFC version touched up like RS2 and 3 were.

So is there no way to leave Azhuacan in Urpina's story? All I have are these Earth Serpent battles, and I don't think I have the resources to make it through the "hard" ones. But there's nothing left to smith, and no way to leave, so am I just stuck banging my head against this?

Edit: I guess the answer was to just keep banging my head. For as good as the battle system is, having battles often coming down to whether status ailments stick can be frustrating.

I love Star Ocean but at the end of the day it's just a comfy jrpg with mostly mashy combat and not much that is special.

Scarlet Grace is however very special.

It's old vs new. Take the risk with a new game doing new things you might not like vs a comfy, albeit outdated game that might feel too ancient

Made some progress with Leonard, got right at the part where I learn that Ei--Hanum might lie below Azhuacan so I'm going there but I was wondering if I'm supposed to pick up every scarlet shard I get a hint of since there are a couple I couldn't pick like the one involving a baby. And those huge ass serpents coming from the ground, do I have to wreck every one of those? Downed a few.

It's weird how this games feels like the prototype or alpha version to a great game and is still super enjoyable.

EDIT : Also, I've only recruited one shitty magic user up to now, is it normal?
