Halfway through a couple of character campaigns. 1 was a superhero guy. Red? Blue? Or something? Yeah. I enjoyed it, gameplay, atmosphere and story-wise. A little grindy and needed Gamefaqs once or twice to progress but I was into all that.

That's Red. Thankfully there's more main progression hints/guide for objectives. Mechanics are still as obtuse as they ever were, but the speed boosts likely pave over the rough spots a bit.

I've given it a few hours and Frontier was definitely more of an oddball game than I expected. Can't say that I enjoyed it though. It doesn't really have any of the features from RS2 and SG that I really liked, and everything just feels kind of half-baked. The minimalistic storytelling and general lack of information about what the hell is happening doesn't feel mysterious or enticing to me, but more like they just kind of forgot to include half the game.

On the plus side, though, it also looked far better on my TV than I expected. Artistically I'd call it a complete mess without any sort of coherent identity. But technically speaking I think the sprites work pretty well with the pre-rendered backgrounds.

I've never played this game, but the way people have been talking about it in this thread is reminding me of The Last Remnant, and I really like that game.

The Last Remnant is also a Kawazu game, the main producer behind SaGa. I love TLR! Personally I think Saga Scarlet Grace gave me a lot of similar feelings moreso than this one has so far, but I'm also very early in this.

I loved everything about The Last Remnant except for the main character, who I mostly just wanted to punch in the face. From what I've played of Frontier I wouldn't say that they have anything really notable in common though, other than maybe the obscure power-up system. Frontier seems to be much, much more open ended in the sense that it just sort of sets you loose upon the world and then it's up to you to entertain yourself with whatever systems the game happens to provide. Some will see that as a feature. But as I indicated above, to me it mostly just felt incomplete.

Midgar, With Love
I appreciate the perspective from someone familiar with the original. What platform did you review on? I've been looking for Switch impressions because grinding on the go seems like a good time but I've been bit by a few less than stellar Switch ports in the past.

Sorry, I played on PS4! Switch was my original plan, though! Square sent a PS4 code, so I rolled with it. I hope the Switch version's decent!
