The thread is something else. Many Millennials and Gen Xers mentioning their parents, particularly fathers, being brainwashed by this maniac.

Didn't he go from FM disc jockey to political pundit? The worst part of him is I doubt he believed 1% of what he was saying

He needs to live long enough to see Trump tossed off the White House steps, then he has my permission to die.

did rush say it was his final show because all the news stories i saw called it his final show of 2020 but people on twitter for some reason think it was his last one ever? (I mean, if we're lucky he won't be back on air next year but I'd rather he not die while trump is still in office so he doesn't get honored with flags at half staff and all that BS that you know would come)

The 1-2 punch of the pill popping hypocrite and admitting to being a water carrying tool for GWB should of sent him to retirement years ago.

He's always been a hateful prick. I remember coming home from school and my grandmother would be listening to him on my radio - so loud it could be heard all over the house. I'd turn it off and she'd hit the roof. He changed her for the worse too and I hope he rots in hell.

He lived long enough enough to see Trump lose. With Trump's presidency in ashes, he now has my permission to die.

Edit: Kensation beat me to it.

The tweet you posted doesn't say "may" though.

That's my point lol
Well, I'm the thread starter so I'm responsible for fact checking lol.

But many in the media are seeing it as final show. We'll see. Remember, the man has terminal cancer.

The worse thing about Rush is that his legacy continues unabated. You have youthful turds Ben Shapiro and Charlie Kirk, of Turning Point USA.

It's a clownshow.

It definitely could be. Just saying that the tweet seems to be the original source (and is likely what led to the Weissman tweet as well).

Rush Limbaugh says he didn't expect to be alive in an emotional last show of 2020

Rush Limbaugh wrapped up his final show of 2020 with an emotional outpouring of gratitude for the support he's received during his battle with Stage 4 lung cancer.

He actually sounded like he plans on coming back on the air.

"You have no idea what you all have meant to me and my family," the 69-year-old radio host said at the end of "The Rush Limbaugh Show," on December 23. "The day is going to come folks where I'm not going to be able to do this."

Hopefully not, of course.

absolutely. right wing media isn't what it is without this hatefully bigoted and hypocritical monster paving the way on all those AM dials. all these current day opportunists pretty much took his gop-loving/lib hating steez and ran with it.

and now we're stuck with seemingly half the country being straight-up dittoheads

My dad is a life-long listener and thus, I was too at one point. Only by the grace of Gaf (and continuing here on Era) did I escape that poisonous wasteland of hate.

He has done untold amounts of damage.

Must say, I'm not really comfortable with all this "my poor parents were changed by this evil man" shtick. Everyone who listened to Limbaugh and decided to change their outlook based on his comments, did so on their own accord. If someone tells you to run your head against a wall, as fast as you can, and you do it and get a concussion and die, then you can't argue that the person lying literally murdered you. Everyone is responsible for their own actions in life. You can't abdicate responsibility over your life choices to a voice on the radio.

I agree with everyone Limbaugh was an evil man, who deeply hurt his country, but we should note that anyone "becoming racist" or not going to the doctor, due to comments from Limbaugh, is 100% to blame for those actions. That's on YOU, for being a gullible, racist dipshit, not "man from the radio".

Twenty years ago, I'd have given him grudging credit as a very talented broadcaster wasting that ability in service of a dead-end ideology, but fuck that. He's a miserable sack of shit who deserves to go straight to Hell.

We can only hope. What a dubious "legacy". The only way he can improve the world now is to no longer be a part of it.

I don't think anyone "decides" to change their outlook. People tend to be engrained in their world view, they don't decide to change it.

Propaganda is a thing. People are affected by the media they consume, and not generally in a conscious way.

With that said, it is usually someone's fault for deciding to listen.

Persuasive talking is absolutely a real thing, though. And I don't think anyone is saying a radio show changed their parents in the course of a day. A week. A month. The man's been on the air for decades. It's plenty of time to f people up. They "just listen," at first, until years later they're repeat his talking points ad nauseum. And there's (usually) no arguing, because it's a space this actual villain of a man has claimed.

Does he *make* people racist? I'd say that's a bit difficult to argue. But he certainly sows that seed along with so much other hatred. And after enough listening, those seeds begin to grow. Whether or not the person decides to let them bask or cut them down, yes, that is still on them. But it wouldn't have even grown so far if not for someone tending to them every day.

Recognizing the source doesn't absolve the person of their shittiness. Like, yeah, my uncle who smoked himself to death probably shouldn't have started smoking at 12. But, maybe corporations selling $7 packs of death is the real issue, also.

A lot of it has to do with the fact that were not really a literate nation. Not everyone looks to engage their mind on deep ideas unfortunately. Everything is a talking point or slogan. There's no real nuance. No wrestling with ideas.

Just listen to Ben Shapiro, a more newer version of Rush. It's nonsense. He cites nothing. He doesn't wrestle with anything. HIs mind is made up. He also never defines the terms, which is key in any important discussion. To him, Nordic Social Democracy is Socialism. He's an idiot.

The best inoculation from these right wing talking head is critical thinking and being well read honestly. But again, not everyone loves reading and putting on TV/Radio is basically just being spoonfed.

Also, Neil Postman predicted in Amusing Ourselves To Death.

It's a choice to give in to hatred, to listen to it every day and be ok with it. Maybe even get a thrill from it, I don't know what happens in the mental state of people addicted to shows like that. Limbaugh has a fair share of the blame for what he did to the media and cultural landscape, but when you look at individual cases, like those tweets, I only see people who decided to follow a creed of hatred and believe in obvious lies, to their own detriment even.

I think it's harder when it's a substance that literally makes you addicted to it, and fucks with your brain chemistry to some (small) extend. I don't think you can compare that to listening to the radio.

I'm with you on this. People are going to push back because it's easier to blame Rush than admit your parents/friends/relatives are simply just hateful pieces of shit who would have gravitated to the loudest hateful mouthpiece anyway. One of the main reasons we are in this situation is because people aren't confrontational towards people they love because they have "a good heart" or "it's just politics".

The fact that a whole section of the media (that is, stuff like [Modern?] Fox, OAN, Newsmax) you could trace in part back to Rush and people like him, means that it's not just addiction to shows like his. It's his and everyone else's that took cues. Because the cues work. It's not just his radio show now, it's his radio show, it's the news, it's ads presented with facts and logic.

I'm not quite well-versed enough to really.. argue much here. I don't fully disagree with you. It's still on each person to make their own decisions, I agree. But I also think that people who may have been kinder, less hateful, that end up tuned into the web of shows and become a worse person aren't just gullible idiots.

Maybe it's naïveté.

I agree that right-wing media isn't without its fair share of the blame here, but at the same time, the audience also decides what it wants to listen to. Why do these "cues work" ? Because people get hooked on the idea that all their problems are due to some easily identifiable external factors, like people of other races, or the socialist government or whatever. They need to give in to this shit, just because it's easy to do so, doesn't mean they are helpless victims. These same people then vote for politicians who make life harder for everyone, but mostly for minorities.
