Watching that Tim Rogers video about him walking around E3 and seeing a fuckton of empty space and not many people was already the sign of things to come.

That happens as a result of Sony and MS showing games way too early and hyping them for years. They both need to get away from that this generation.
I want to see gameplay when games are revealed, not cinematic concept hype trailers.
I get where you're coming from, but for some of us....that's not a big deal or a bother in the slightest.

I'm 100% okay with showing games far out. It's not like literally anything changes as a result.

Also, 100% of games will show gameplay before I am 'forced' to make a purchase so I don't see the issue.

Yes, I'm aware. You seem to be missing the point.

MS owning the theater has literally nothing to do with whether or not they overshadow Sony. It's silly that you mentioned it.

What I'm saying is that having to share a weekend with your #1 competitor who has drawn just as much or more attention in previous E3s makes little sense.

Sony probably wants an entire news cycle to themselves. If they went to E3 they would have to share that with all the other E3 news.

Cool, I hope this mean they can do a conference on their own terms. Like watching it in theaters but alongside our EU Bros.

Good. Everyone should be able to hold en event on their own terms, on their own time, rather be obligated to deliver in some arbitrary date in June.

Sony has the PS5 to announce. They want to do it right, cause it will affect the whole gen going forward. Can't really fault them for that.

Reposting my thoughts from the next gen thread:

To be honest the industry should be doing what Microsoft has been doing with E3, having its own event in another building while being at E3 in name only, same with EA and Nintendo.

There is no denying that the ESA is killing E3, from poorly managed events when they first opened to the public to doxxing every journalist that attended the event.

Guys i really don't want E3 to die off, it's a yearly tradition for gamers, it's Christmas in June for us, but dammit it is hard to defend it these days and the numbers don't lie.

With that being said if Sony announces today that they'll skip E3 in favour of their own event during E3 week similar to what Microsoft, EA and Nintendo are already doing (with a hopefully better time for EU fans) then i'll be perfectly fine with their decision.

I want the E3 name and tradition to live on without the ESA, i'm sure that everyone here can agree to that.
Nintendo is always at E3. They release a Direct and then run Treehouse Live from the E3 showfloor in addition to having an elaborate booth with all their upcoming games being showcased. Nintendo never left E3.

Pretty big bummer. It's nice to have a single date to look forward to to see what everyone is doing.

Perhaps E3 needed to improve, but we didn't need this.

I don't like this. Arrogant Sony is back! Lol

Please describe how this is arrogant, unless you are just trolling.

It's entirely possible they want to have their own individual events where it's likely less pressure and they don't have to share the spotlight with their competition (depending on when their shows are). For years they had the benefit of closing out the 'pre-show' cycle, but that also meant they had to follow everyone up. It was a double-edged sword.

Some of you are acting like Sony is completely turning turtle with an iron curtain of NO NEWS/JUST BUY OUR SHIT. That's not the case. State of Play, regardless of your personal opinion on them, is still an avenue where they share info/reveals with fans and press. Larger shows would have a similar purpose and more significant impact. How is that arrogant?

I'm not bothered by the news and I would welcome more Direct/State of Play/PSX in the future, I think this format does well. At least for me. But E3 was interesting for letting people play games so to replace that, I think companies can do the same thing as last TGA with games demos on Steam, it would be a good thing. Of course, it does not remove logistic and planning to fit a demo for a event like this but I think it would be easier for devs, correct me if I'm wrong.

Regarding the other point it's obviously much better for Sony to hold their own event, at their own time and control the narrative , message, and get all the attention. MS should (and will) do the same in the future.

Meh nintendo was right to start moving away from it all when they did
The only thing Nintendo moved away from was a big press conference. They have been on the E3 show floor with elaborate booths every single year they've done a digital conference.

What Sony Is doing is different. They aren't having a conference with big news drops AND they are a no show all together on the show floor.

Good. Come E3 they can still put out a lengthy State of Play with trailers and launch info, without all the filler.

But what about media hands on impressions and previews? They'll have a hard time getting that considering the big outlets will be focused on E3. They can't steal media attention from a big huge trade show. They will have to do it a few weeks before or after.

I don't understand the sentiment that Nintendo left E3 or "moved away from it". They're literally spending thousands of dollars to have these huge booths and displays for their games. They also have Treehouse on the floor every year. They still technically have a "conference" in form of the Direct that is directly linked to E3.

There are still a lot of eyes on E3, but when the biggest player isn't there... I don't know. For a launch year I get they'd want to do their own event, last year I thought it was a mistake.

Thats the point I was trying to make but didn't do it well apparently.

This sucks if it's true, they've pulled back from basically every public event. Sony does it's own closed to the public open for business to business event in February (Destination Playstation) where they will publicly announce a limited amount of information on a newly launching console public and that's cool for what it is.

E3 is really the only week of the year where all the fans and games media evaluate everything that is coming in the future on all platforms at one time publicly and it creates a unique energy from which the state of the community address is formed specifically for gamers.

To me it sounds like it's a situation where Jim Ryan is poor showman and just wants to do an event with a smaller crowd to feel more comfortable and that's total shite. They need to push Jim Ryan into strategy or something try to bring Shawn Layden back as CEO so we can get our public events back and the image of the guy that looks like he just stepped off of a $2M yacht to the Playstation stage to just greet the "Playstation Nation" and drop some insane game trailers. Whether you're Playstation fan on not that's just great showmanship to represent gaming in general.

Tbh, all the big publishers should make their own Blizzcon. It would make announcements more exciting throughout the year.

It's true Nintendo still attends E3, but they've also set themselves up nicely for a future where E3 doesn't exist.

IIRC MS streams had better numbers both years, and MS also owns the theater. So it's not really laughable, it makes that Sony wants all the attention to themselves.
Hi Proven, not sure if I read your post correctly but Sony hold there show at a completely different location. Not sure on the stream numbers.

That's a bummer I've always liked E3 just because it was fun to watch all the conferences one after another. Now they all seem to be so spread out even without Sony not attending.

The event itself has lost importance and skipping it is not really that big of a deal, but E3 week is still a thing. So I'm thinking they'll do their own event during the same week, like EA does. And it shouldn't be too different for us that only follow it online.

Them having an event for PS5 is exciting. Putting out something like a State of Play near E3 where MS will pretty much have a huge show along with Nintendo (which is the format they are copying) won't be the best idea imo. Their SoP's are executed so poorly, I really hope they re-work the format on those.
