Nearing the end of Shadowbringers myself, yes the expansions are the meat of the game, but that doesn't stop ARR from being a horrifically awful barrier dozens of hours long. I'm still unsure if I'd ever recommend this to anyone new given how bad it is.LMFAO nobody cares about ARR my guy. The main meat of FFXIV is the expansions. What a ignorant ass post
100% this.
Look, I never enjoyed MMOs before FFXIV and I know a lot of us didn't. The team behind this game is so talented that I overcame that hurdle because hot damn it's a good Final Fantasy.
But even for those of y'all who can't get past the MMO aspect, I get it, you don't have to play the game; just please trust me: they are the best team at Square overall. Incredibly talented and their passion and reverence for the franchise shines through constantly even as they pave bold new roads for what it means to be an FF.
That sounds cool and there's potential in that. People want their stylized and cool looking characters in FFXVI though lolI was playing through Nautica in Dragon Quest 11 today and it occurred to me how cool it would be to have an underwater RPG where everyone in the party is a sea creature
literally started it on my iMac TODAY. Little overwhelmed, my only MMO experience was a few hours of XI many years ago on PS2. What I've played so far is fun, very polished and nicely written. I really need a controller though, I'm so not used to playing with a keyboard and mouse.
Hey, patience is a virtue

ARR is at worst one of those generic MMO made after WoW gained popularity years ago. Unless it's someone who really hate MMO, I wouldn't mind recommending it.Nearing the end of Shadowbringers myself, yes the expansions are the meat of the game, but that doesn't stop ARR from being a horrifically awful barrier dozens of hours long. The expansions are structured much the same as ARR with some tweaks and quality of life changes. The difference is in the writing and scope, and narrative presentation. I think for what it was at the time of its release ARR is good at what it set out to do. The team has also matured in the 7 years since its release and it shows. Yeah ARR will always be necessary to experience for what comes after, but it isn't some nightmare of an unplayable mess that has to be endured for the 'good part' to kick in. The good stuff later on only happens at all because ARR set up for it to.Nearing the end of Shadowbringers myself, yes the expansions are the meat of the game, but that doesn't stop ARR from being a horrifically awful barrier dozens of hours long. And I'll be the guy to tell you you're right. ARR has plenty of fantastic story beats in it. Some of it is boring filler shit but it's far from being all or even most of it.I'll be the guy to defend ARR. It's a good game that establishes a universe and brings a shit ton of lore to the table, brings your character up from a run of the mill adventurer to an involved VIP, and introduces characters who will later grow and change in ways most FF casts could only hope to. It's also faithful to the original job systems of early FF. Burying your head in the sand and repeating that it sucks ad nauseum doesn't convince anybody that you're right. It just makes you look stubborn.
Again, why should I have to pay to get past all the awful content? The game is forcing a sub and a skip on me or a slog is the issue. You also have to pay for the level up item, don't you? Which looks like it's double the price of the story skip. The base game is essentially free or at most like $5 now. So paying for ARR + skip will really cost you $16, barely over a month of subscription
But it's still a horribly boring fetch quest of a game, at least up until MSQ 35 where I stopped. Skipping cutscenes isn't going to make it a 5 hour game, it's still a boring 30+ hour title. The cutscenes weren't amazing but it's not like the gameplay was hot either. They both suck. You realize you can manually skip cutscenes without paying right? I brought up both options because you aren't limited to one.
Paying to skip allows you to jump right in but it will still function like an MMO which means you need to level a character in order to reach the newer content. This should be expected in any online game.
They have also streamlined ARR recently making it even EASIER to bypass the dull story and moments. You have plenty of options that don't force you to sit through 50+ hours of old and unsatisfying content. There is zero excuse to still hold it against the rest of the game.
I gave it 30ish hoursLove the hate on FFXIV ARR from people who gave up on it an hour in.
I hate it and I got to level 80 in Shadowbringers thanks to quarantine and having a friend that's a healer that could get me through queues faster than 20 minutes. I doubt I would have made it through otherwise. Shadowbringers and Heavensward are good, but I'm not going to dismiss how awful ARR was to get through to get there in the first place.Love the hate on FFXIV ARR from people who gave up on it an hour in.
Hahaha uhhh... nooo....
I'd want underwater exploration to be a part of the game. I hate limited experiences. I miss world exploration, and I DEFINITELY miss multi-world exploration (underwater, underworld, moon, anotehr planet) in the FF series.

I'd rather they put their full resources getting FF7R part two out. But this is not coming out for years anyway.

Uuuh you know square enix has different teams right?I'd rather they put their full resources getting FF7R part two out. But this is not coming out for years anyway.

Heavensward is godly but it's largely because of the buildup that ARR provideslol imagine feeling forced to buy a level-up skip.
Leveling is never an issue in FFXIV. Its so easy to level in this game. ARR sucks compared to the expansions but its not that terrible. It sets up so much stuff that makes the expac way better. Without ARR, SHB would not be as good as it is. And once again ARR was inherited from the shitstain that 1.0 was
Because there's also a skip cutscene feature that is free and you still blame the game just for its existence. Also...if you have HW expansion, there are new jobs that starts at 30. And SB's jobs starts at 50 while Shb job starts at 60.Again, why should I have to pay to get past all the awful content? The game is forcing a sub and a skip on me or a slog is the issue. You also have to pay for the level up item, don't you? Which looks like it's double the price of the story skip.
Then that is a you problem. You obviously just don't like the MMO structure and that is fine but that doesn't mean the game is bad.But it's still a horribly boring fetch quest of a game, at least up until MSQ 35 where I stopped. Like what other JRPG requires such a ridiculous time investment to 'get good'? It's a long genre but usually they kick into gear within the first 5 hours. Like fuck P5's pacing but the story and gameplay were both 10x better than ARR.
Retail or classic? If I had more time I would be playing AAR, but WoW still is the MMO that has my attention. Which is unfortunate because Legion pretty much was the last expansion I cared for.
I can't wait to see FFXVI
A new FF, this will finally get me excited for next generation.
I really liked XIV, but I always feel like I missed something when people praise its story. I only got as far as finishing ARR though, then my free month ended so I never went back lol.
Technically true, but those worlds are pretty small (basically the size of towns and dungeons), and I don't care for the KH series.
lol imagine feeling forced to buy a level-up skip.

I won't defend that part of it yeah. The pacing is lax until you reach Coerthas and the main meat of the plot kicks in around level 37ish, and in the patch content between you'll feel sluggish if you aren't vested in what's going on around Eorzea. I guess it's where the MMO vs standard RPG break becomes apparent. I think I'll give ARR a replay sometime to see how my memories hold up.disparate and I have been playing XIV with friends since quarantine started like he mentioned and yeah...ARR was definitely a slog. Having played through all of the content now I can obviously say that overall the game is great and has totally given me hours upon hours of enjoyable story and dungeon/raid experiences with friends, but I can't sugarcoat the fact that I do have memories of me muttering my displeasure at ARR pacing. Still I'm excited to see what the FFXIV team can do because their recent output has been really enjoyable.
Because:
But the main scenario writer for Shadowbringers probably isn't involved with FFXVI but key people from Heavensward are and that expansion is just as good in terms of story.

Final Fantasy XVI Announcement Reportedly Planned For PS5 Showcase
Square Enix is planning to announce Final Fantasy XVI during the upcoming PS5 showcase according to some reports. The event is set for this Wednesday.twistedvoxel.com
I would've gone further but playing with randoms in the dungeons stressed me out. I tried to be a healer for a bit and it didn't end well lol. Did they ever make it all solo-able or is it just the newer stuff?
It's just Shadowbringers where you can solo a dungeon with NPCs. Healing can be stressful yeah. Go with a DPS job and you'll have an easier time (albeit longer queue times).I would've gone further but playing with randoms in the dungeons stressed me out.
