They did streamline ARR but I'm not sure how better that makes the experience. Or how long it takes to get through it.

I am curious how they are going to differentiate it from 14. Assuming it's a singe player game, no matter what they do, the story is going to feel a lot smaller than 14's. So I feel like there really has to be something special about to set it apart.

Look, I never enjoyed MMOs before FFXIV and I know a lot of us didn't. The team behind this game is so talented that I overcame that hurdle because hot damn it's a good Final Fantasy.
But even for those of y'all who can't get past the MMO aspect, I get it, you don't have to play the game; just please trust me: they are the best team at Square overall. Incredibly talented and their passion and reverence for the franchise shines through constantly even as they pave bold new roads for what it means to be an FF.

Yep. I too was one of those who couldn't get into MMOs before XIV but I gave the game a chance and its brought forth some of the best writing and world building the series has ever seen. The talent on that game is really some of SE's best and I'm more than stoked to see what they can do with a more traditional title.
They already have two. Final Fantasy XI is still a thing.

My point has always been that no matter how good HS or SB are they don't justify playing through the bad ARR. sorry you don't like my opinion but it's justified because no other game says play me for 50 hours before I'm goid. It's SE's decision to prop up a shitty experience.

Definitely promising if it the FF14 team. I am close to wrapping up the post ARR updates, but I already really like the game in many ways despite the main story being bit of a slog to get through (but it has a lot of good stuff). I am so excited to get into Heavensward in the near future!

You can skip ARR by paying money. But hey, complaining in every FFXIV thread to get your opinion across sure sounds like you're the reasonable one here.
XI lasted for 11 years before XIV came out and XIV has a huge growing playerbase. There's no reason why they would juggle two active MMO's from the same franchise.
XIV is incredibly well written and designed so using ARR being a slog to dismiss the games quality is really silly. I also think there is a simple solution if playing through it really bothers you. Pay to skip it or just skip the cutscenes so you can move on to the interesting content. I played years ago when ARR started and I hated it so I just skipped the cutscenes and it made my experience better. You don't HAVE to sit through hours of boring cutscenes. It's a simple skip option.

I hope XVI has a weird cast of party members like IX. I want a one legged dolphin dragoon and a white mage that is a furry spider with a pointy hat.

I already acknowledged it was pay to skip, and that that's bullshit.
But yeah I'll keep calling out ARR for being trash and people still won't have an excuse other than "but the expansions are good" which isn't enough of an excuse.
Why is it pay to skip when they know it sucks? It should be free. Time saver microtransactions get called out and this is worse.
It's like saying XIII-2 is better than XIII, but also you have to buy XIII to get access XIII-2. Like no, just buy the game separately?

FFXIV ARR biggest issue is fixing shit started from 1.0 but the way HW -> SHB closes out the arc is so well done its hard to say its a negative.

The base game is essentially free or at most like $5 now. So paying for ARR + skip will really cost you $16, barely over a month of subscription
I was playing through Nautica in Dragon Quest 11 today and it occurred to me how cool it would be to have an underwater RPG where everyone in the party is a sea creature
I'll be the guy to defend ARR. It's a good game that establishes a universe and brings a shit ton of lore to the table, brings your character up from a run of the mill adventurer to an involved VIP, and introduces characters who will later grow and change in ways most FF casts could only hope to. It's also faithful to the original job systems of early FF. Burying your head in the sand and repeating that it sucks ad nauseum doesn't convince anybody that you're right. It just makes you look stubborn.
Whether it is announced or not not Wednesday, if the game truly exists and it is indeed being developed by FFXIV team, it will be very exciting news. It'll probably be a great game.
I'd honestly be surprised if there wasn't some kind of online multiplayer thing going on in it though. These kinds of games are just too expensive to develop to not have a "long tail". Unless they're just gonna release half assed "episodes" ala FFXV
ARR is not bad. I mean yeah it is bit of a slog, but it was still fun getting through recently, and the fact that not only it looks like the expansions are better structured, but the team actually went back to streamline ARR, shows just how far they have come from 1.0. Feels like a team that I can have faith with.
You realize you can manually skip cutscenes without paying right? I brought up both options because you aren't limited to one.
Paying to skip allows you to jump right in but it will still function like an MMO which means you need to level a character in order to reach the newer content. This should be expected in any online game.
They have also streamlined ARR recently making it even EASIER to bypass the dull story and moments. You have plenty of options that don't force you to sit through 50+ hours of old and unsatisfying content. There is zero excuse to still hold it against the rest of the game.
