If anyone thinks that everyone will drop their info In June they won't. Some might but there's no point in waiting if there is no event
They will spread info from April-September imo. Would make way more sense

I have had so many great experiences chatting with the community during E3 events and sharing in the excitement. Virus and health risk aside it kinda seemed E3 was eventually going to end up this way. I for one am totally okay with all these various conferences being done as a stream since that is how I experience them anyways having never physically been to one. But the most important thing is this reduces the risk of a potential outbreak for those who would have attended so it is ultimately a good thing.

I'm honestly OK with devs not having to crunch to get a demo done in time for E3, I know that's always a headache for those showing off stuff.

I expect we'll still see "directs" and plenty of trailers. The thing I'll miss most are the Giantbomb Night Shows.

But why? It's the only week of the year where everything seems to be centered around gaming. A celebration of gaming, after every E3 i get really pumped to play games.

Dutch gaming sites even have nightly live streams where thousand of people stay up all night only because of the live shows and to celebrate games together. I would miss it enormous if it's gone forever.
that one week soaks up for me personally, almost two months of time for planning and execution to pull off. it's a lot of work and honestly, for a lot of devs it seems to be similar work experiences. There will always be trade shows and cons. always trailers and reveals, but now more manageable, you get more of a spotlight and the workload is just easier to justify on a budget sheet.

I personally think it's a bit early, but I welcome our new video direct overlords.

The conspiracy theorist/cynical asshole in me thinks they just see this as a good excuse to cancel what was probably going to be a pretty underwhelming show, considering how much industry support for it has retracted and how poorly-received the leaks about their "new direction" have been.

This is probably going to be the final nail in the coffin for E3. It's already facing am irellevency crisis. It won't survive seeing just how unnecessary it is.

Of course this is likely an inevitable outcome this year with the coronavirus, but I just don't understand the celebrating and victory laps by some that something cool for the industry we love won't happen. The world has enough depressing stuff to go around, so being happy about stuff like this that many enjoyed and which is huge for many developers to get attention on that stage is odd.

Sony silence is paying off huh? But on a serious note, that sucks for the local economy and studios.

Damn...I know E3 doesn't really make all that much sense anymore, but I still look forward to it every year like it's Christmas. I hype it up in my head counting down to it as soon as April.

Really a huge bummer, but it had to be done.

E3 cancelled? Disappointing but probably a very good choice given the current situation.

We don't need E3. They can just stream.

The true death knell for e3 right here, bad and unfortunate timing for them

guess we will get out online shows for everything around the time, maybe MS will still do their stage show and the ps5 info will come via online format obviously

This is also the same event that was so poorly run with such relaxed security that it leaked the personal information of many attendees last year. As good as E3 has been as a marketing event, the ESA has been pretty hurtful to the industry the past couple of years, and that's where the celebrating is coming from. They really needed to get their act together and hopefully, this is more of a kick in the pants for them to do just that.

I mean nintendo held their own stage show for the switch in January, so sony could do it too.

Yes there's an increase in people the last 2 decades who don't like physical interacts. Despite the increase in reclusivness there's still a ton of people who like to socialise person to person and not digitally.
You can still socialize about e3 without going to it, if they do a digital event or everyone releases their videos in the same time frame they would have had their conference/direct you can do your own watch party's and stuff like that with friends. From the mid 00s to the mid 10s my friends and I did this anyway.

That is sad.

I hope the "alternative" Geoff Keighley event is still going on.

Writing was on the wall for E3 even without corona, but it's crazy to me that the year new consoles are launching there's not going to be an E3.

I guess good on the ESA for cancelling this early. I wasn't expecting an announcement like this until May.

I don't want to sound pessimist and I hope I'm wrong but these last months were so shitty for E3 and now this... I don't know if this will survive for 2021.

If true this will hurt me in my soul like E3 has been one of my favorite events every year and I have been watching the coverage for almost 20 years so this will be truly sad if true.

It's very much not unknown for devs to have to crunch for what amounts to a promotional deadline, having demos they can show on the show floor. Worse still, given the nature of vertical slice development and the pressure of a specific immovable deadline, it's work that might not actually be usable in the finished product either.

It's all starring to make sense... it's all a conspiracy! Geoff called quits on E3 and now corona virus has cancelled E3... Geoff is winning and now will give the cure and he will start his own event for exclusive coverage on next-gen! I caught on Geoff!!!

This could well be a blessing in disguise. Go the Direct route, just trailers, minimal bullshit fluff, no more obnoxious cheering plants in the audience, no more awkward weirdness on stage (though I get that's a draw for many, I'm not a fan of it) and hopefully less of a need to bullshit people because you have to meet this deadline to get something together to present. Just release info and updates as and when there's something significant to show.
