Im literally using that setup, a 3080 and the 27GN950 and I love it.

Reaching 144hrz at 4k will depend on the game and since it is gsync is buttery smooth. Do not get a 1440p monitor if you intend to use a 3080, is not worth it.

it is driving games to 240hz.

Nothing else will do the job better and it will give me most consistency when in gsync.

If you're maxing out at 1440p, the 3080 is *overkill*. Higher refresh rates hinge more on your CPU, not GPU, so your budget would be better split up with a 3070 (or, quite frankly, a 2070 Super) and that much more $ in your CPU, RAM, and an NVMe 4.0-compatible mobo.
Improved Ray Tracing performance for the 3000 series of cards is a major reason to upgrade which is why a 2000 series card at this point would be a poor choice especially when comparing the two price wise.

Higher RTX resolution is as much of a waste for 1440p resolution as more VRAM to store textures. The gains are currently nigh imperceptible, and as such, the 3080 will be overkill on 1440p resolutions for some time. Like, by all means, spend whatever $ you want, but you're better off either scooping up a cheap RTX 2070 Super and setting RT in applicable games to "medium" or seeing how the RTX 3070 shakes out.

I currently have an RTX 2080 FE paired with a i7-10700K (all core at 5 Ghz) and 3200 Hz 32 GB RAM....I game at a 3440x1440 res (so this isn't an exact comparison to the traditional 1440p res), are you saying there won't be a perceptible difference in performance with a RTX 3080? I find that hard to believe especially with Ray Tracing games. I mean playing at the 3440x1440 res and trying to get as close to 120 FPS (max 120 refresh rate for this monitor) with the very best support for Ray Tracing is my main desire to acquire a 3080.

"higher RTX resolution" is not the same as "higher resolution games." it means, the resolution/quality of ray traced light bounces.

1440/144hz easily. 144hz on a 4k monitor is a waste because you're likely not getting anywhere near those frames at 4k. As good as the 3080 is, it's still not that good.

Also, based on what I've been reading...4K at refresh rates above 120Hz come with a whoooole bunch of caveats and compromises. Usually to color bit depth.

You're going to have to wait until HDMI 2.1 monitors roll out next year to get proper 4K with refresh rates above 120Hz without compromises in other areas of performance. Currnet DisplayPort just isn't enough to do it without losing something along the way.

I wouldn't put too much stock in what people are saying about it not making a difference. My friend just upgraded to a 3080, runs the same resolution as you. Went from around 50-60 FPS on RDR2 with some settings lowered to everything on max with a minimum frame rate of around 85. That's a big enough increase in price to performance in my eyes. My 3080 should arrive in a few weeks, can't wait.

I honestly don't know what you mean by "overkill" wrt 3080 in 1440p as it isn't that much CPU limited there even in current gen titles without ray tracing.
Getting a two years old GPU now, less than a month away from new GPU launches in the same pricing segment doesn't look like a smart thing to do either.

For the 1st one you linked I would say yes.

I ended up stopping at Bestbuy on my way home from work and decided an ultra wide wouldn't work in my setup. I went with a 55" Samsung Q90T which should be able to to 120hz VRR. I hope it's not too ridiculous when sitting that close to a 55" when I play keyboard/mouse games. 😂 I might have to get a table so I can sit further away.

Ha, ha, oh wow. Yeah you have to do that!

1440p, or better yet, 1440p Ultrawide.

Give yourself the best chance of 144fps that you can. Or likely 160fps if you get one of the LG's that overclock.

Losing color depth? Maybe Im missing something but now Im at 10bpc,144hrz, 4K, full range with display port. What Im missing?

A someone whose owned a 4k120hz display for 2.5 years: The vast majority of the games you can play on PC right now are going to benefit much more from 4k144hz rather than settling 1440p144hz.

Sure, you might be thinking about Cyberpunk 2077 or Assassin's Creed Valhalla, but what about the first Witcher or AC Black Flag? Any time you pick up a non-AAA or few years old game, its going to massively benefit from using a 4k144hz monitor versus being capped at 1440p, especially with a 3080. Take a look at the Autumn Steam Festival and all the demos of **NEW** games you can play at 4k144hz.

I don't know your habits, but I'd imagine that a few years down the line the 3080 will be sold off while you'll still be using the same monitor.

Ah, I didn't think of it like that, interesting. 4k at 144hz may also be future proof as well.
