Upgrading every single GPU gen will never give you big results (assuming like for like, so 2080 to 3080 for example, not 2060 to 3080). And at the same time, your card isn't redundant once a newer gen is released, especially when you're running an xx80 variant.

I'd wait to see how games perform for you. There's no need to upgrade instantly, and since you have access to DLSS 2.0 already you probably won't struggle with titles like Cyberpunk on a 2080. And if you do feel like the performance isn't good enough for whatever reason, then look into an upgrade. Personally, I try to skip every other gen. Currently on a 1070 and planning a jump to a 3080 this month. That's when the purchase feels really good, and not "do I really need this..?"

I've got a 2060, and made the jump from a 1080p tv to an LG CX... Definitely thinking I'll see the benefits in jumping in with a 3080!

Always skip a gen. I buy my cards every 3/4 years, really. Usually getting the second round refresh cards, not the launch ones.

The 2080ti is about 40% faster than the 2080, and the 3080 is 40-60% faster than that. I wouldn't call that small... and I don't see how a 2080ti can overclock to that at all (especially as the 3080 could overclock, too).
I didn't say it would be closed completely, but you're right. I'm just torn about the -1GB VRAM. Feels wrong to upgrade but go backwards on that, especially since next-gen games will be more demanding on that front.

The 3090 price is a joke so I'm ruling that out entirely.

Just wait for the 20GB Ti or Super in a few months. Let the others be fooled by the marketing and downgrade to 10GB. They will regret it eventually

The 2080TI is only 10-15~ percent faster than the 2080S and would say the 3080 looks 50 percent better. Honestly if you are on an OG card the upgrade makes more sense but if you have a super card riding it out is wiser.

Got a 2080. I normally never upgrade for a single generation.
But I kinda want a 3080 due to HDMI 2.1 for connecting to my TV. And this does seem like a decent performance upgrade, though reviews will have to tell the full story.

Probably waiting for a sale though. Maybe there is a small cut at Black Friday.

In the same boat, doubly so if theres a 3080 refresh like a Super / Ti but its too soon to tell.

1080 TI to 3080/3090 is a easy yes for me. I was never interested in RTX 2XXX series since it seemed to struggle with RT in the first place. Tech was too new.

I'm planning on upgrading from 2080 to 3080, but a big part of that is because my buddy is planning on building a PC and wants to buy my 2080. And another part of it is because I recently got a 4K monitor after having only played on 1080p up until that point, which has definitely shown that the 2080 is not all-powerful.

I have a 2060 Super that I got around last December so I think I'll stick with it a while.

The 3080 looks really good and would probably be a nice upgrade, but I might try to get the Xbox Series X first, and see about waiting for a Super or 40xx series.

My ultrawide monitor is 1440p so I don't need 4K yet. My consoles are hooked up to my 4K TV.

I have a 2070 I bought last July so I am probably waiting till 4xxx series to upgrade but the 3080 at $700 is definitely enticing.

As a general rule of thumb, I'd recommend waiting for the second new GPU generation before upgrading, so I'd recommend waiting for the 4000 series. With that said, wait for the reviews, since all of the early indications suggest this is a pretty big generational jump.

As a 2070 owner, I agree with this, if we're talking cost vs long term expectations.

Depends. I have a Rtx 2060. It will be a stellar jump for a 3080. 2x performance at least...

Why even entertain the thought of buying a new graphics cards that costs hundreds of dollars when the one you have will still run all games that come out in the next 3 or so years without even breaking a sweat?

Upgrading from a 2080 Ti FE. Undecided between the 3080 and 3090, but I may save money and go with the 3080 this time especially considering the 2080 Ti's current resale value.

I will add though, sell your card at the right time and it's a pretty minimal cost* to upgrade to a new gen

*Assuming newer cards are priced well

I do agree with the upgrading every 3-4 years to feel the biggest impact though.

3090 for gaming is horrendous value and for the 10 people playing at 8k, I'm very jealous of them. It's a card for specific use cases and for those who just want maximum performance at any cost, which is absolutely fine. It's not good value though.

People who are gaming at 4K right now need all of the power they can acquire.

VR users doubly so.

I have a 2070 and can run most games at 4K with a little bit of tweaking. I can't really imagine that people with 2080ti´s have any problems in that regard at all unless we are talking about Star Citizen or something.

Going from 2080Ti to 3090. If the 3090 can last 2 years as the top card, like 2080Ti, it's worth the upgrade. Then, I will repeat with the next card.

I have a 2080 and I won't be getting one.
These cards look impressive but I don't jump at every upgrade available to me.
I'll probably wait for the 40xx

I'm jumping from a RTX 2060 Super to a RTX 3080, no questions asked. That performance is absolutely incredible.

I'm currently running a 2080, and I was straight up under the impression that my 2080 can hold it down for the next couple years no problem. Then the 2080 Ti was announced, followed by the 2080 Super, and I felt like my purchase went to waste right out the gate because these incremental upgrades offered better performance for relatively the same price.

Obviously we still need to wait for official benchmarks for the reference cards and then the partner cards, but from what we've seen so far, is it worth holding on to a 20 series card? Or just bite the bullet at jump into these next-gen cards?
I think it depends on what you're trying to do with the card. If you're running a 1440p panel, 2080's more than adequate for that unless you want to run ray tracing without DLSS or something to goose performance up higher.

I mean 3080's more like a high frame rate gaming 4K card.

Wasn't the Ti announced around the same time as the 2080?

Anyway, if you're an owner of the Ti the 3080 isn't that big of an upgrade. 3090? Maybe, but we don't have any solid benchmarks for that thing yet and the price is ludicrous. Unless you got lucky and sold yours during the craze I don't think it's worth selling your cards just to buy Ampere.

Judge your GPU by the performance it gives you, not by how much you envy what comes out after it.

Honestly I'm feeling super burned because I just bought a 2080S this summer, and the sole reason I invested this much in a GPU was to play DCS World in VR in good conditions, and even the 2080S doesn't cut it. Now I'm anxious to see people testing the game with a 3080 to see what I'm missing out. :/

There was a similar thread on this and reply in this thread is the same as the other one.

There is a saying that goes around PC enthusiast circles in regards to upgrades and whatnot.

"If you choose to wait to upgrade, you will always be waiting"

The next biggest and best thing is always coming out, sometimes you just need to settle and make a firm decision.

Going from 2080TI to 3080 for rasteization gains, but more importantly RT performance gains for CP77.

if 3080Ti materializes with reasonable gains might upgrade to that after, but 3090 is silly card with most of the price being from useless VRAM.

Upgrading my monitor to 4K soon. The next-gen consoles are raising the floor for graphical performance, so I doubt my 2070 can push 4K60 when it comes to major AAA titles.

3080 is just too good of a deal.

I just wanna know the requirements for cyberpunk. That'll decide how early I upgrade

Expect them to drop soon after 3000 -series is released. Devs teased specs coming soon and then game was promoed running on 3080.

2080ti/3070
16/32gb of ram
i9 9900k cpu
and sata ssd for recommened i feel

It's cute that you think 2080Ti will be enough for CP77s RT effects stack for good and steady performance. Even with DLSS I can see 2080Ti having bad time like it had in Control when that game came out.

Also it wont have 32GB RAM or 9900K requirement, you are talking about game that is running on ancient Jaguars.

Edit: I fully expect them to recommend 3080 for best RT performance in the game

lol. my guess would be...

Minimum:

i5-6600K, 8GB, GTX 1060 3GB, 54k/rpm HDD

Recommended:

8700K/2700X, 16GB, GTX 2080 8GB/Radeon VII, SSD

Ideal (RTX on):

i9-9900K/3800X, 32GB, RTX 3080 10GB, NVMe SSD

I am only upgrading because next gen gonna push more V-Ram, if it wasn't the case, i would be happy with 1060 6gb for another 2 years, i am looking for more than 8gb, 3070 fits into my price range, but not at 8gb, if the rumors about the 3070ti is true and it has 16gb i will wait for that card, and run that card into the ground lol, probably keep it for 6-7 years...

I'm seriously concidering skipping PS5 and upgrading my 2060 Super to a 3080 instead. I just want to be playing Cyberpunk in full glory when it's released.

I also have plans on connecting my PC to my TV with some smart solution so that I can get that nice couch gaming feel.

Why enabling RTX would skyrocket CPU or RAM requirements when that doesn't happen in any other game?
