I know this game got some hate when it came out but I just started a run after 2 years and still such a good experience , the style is so pleasing to the eyes, I started with Therion.

For me it's a comfty game that relaxes me. It hits the spot when I just want to play a classic RPG without caring for the story, characters and such. Just a old fashioned simple JRPG experience with a nice art style.

If anyone expects any kind of character development, good writing or an amazing narrative, will be dissapointed. The game is just plain.

I had fun with it. However, I think if they don't make any changes to the narrative and it's progression structure, I might not be inclined to play the sequel. I did really love the first overall, though, for what it was.

I hope we are getting a real sequel and Square listens to feedback. I enjoyed the first, but yeah, there is room for some massive improvements in the character and story departments.

Yoo I was just thinking about starting a new game in this! I'm a sucker for the art and combat -- even at release I liked it more than era I think

Thought this game was great. Every so often I get the urge to replay it. It's probably my favorite turn based system of all time. Was so fun using debuffs and buffs throughout. Certainly wasn't perfect tho and a sequel with improvements could be amazing.

Soundtrack is one of the best of all times tho.

I thought the game was great. I thought the overall story was clever as your heroes' narratives connected at various points as side stories with the main narrative.

It's my GOTY 2018. Like, I get the flaws, but they don't break the greatness for me one bit. A somewhat more focused sequel would be friggin' sweet.

I bought it day one, but I never went farer than Chapter 2. I don't know, the game and gameplay were both very good, being the style, the music and such, but I don't know, I think the story and how the 8 characters weren't very interacting with each other made me lost interest after 10 hours.

I was expecting something ala Golden Sun, and I kind of find it, but so much else was missing. Too bad because I really liked the game for what I played it.

It's fine if you like, play a chapter or 2 and then take a long break.

Way too repetitive otherwise, and the episodic nature lends well to setting it aside for a while. The battle system really kinda plateaus in the middle too.

The lack of any real character development, interaction, narrative, or really anything on that end tying together the non-gameplay aspects of the game made it get extremely frustrating after 5-10 hours (and I still stuck with it until 40+). It's far too long of a game to completely ignore such an important component, and the battle system itself basically comes down to debuffing enemies, buffing yourself, then breaking and piling on the damage every battle. There was just nowhere near enough staying power or incentives to keep playing when it's so long, and it's probably the most unrewarding game I've ever played because of it. Which is a shame because presentation wise, it's utterly fantastic.

I've had it sitting in my switch library for a year and ppl in this thread are calling the story and characters ass. I was expecting something like old school final fantasy but now I might not even bother

One of my fav JRPGs in recent memory, loved it all. Little stories that would keep me engaged enough to explore the world. The "field abilities" or something were a joy to use and the battle system was one of my fav turn based ones. This all topped with amazing graphics and an amazing soundtrack.

Can't wait for a sequel or something of the same style.

The Godly ost carries the game for me.
The battle mechanic was fun for a while but you quickly realize it's just about buffing and debuffing timing,.
The Characters and Stories are just the backdrop.

Give it a chance, it's a great game with flaws but very much worth a play through.

I know the story is a big miss for a lot of people, but I was really pleasantly taken by the mix of archetypical characters and small-scale JRPG stories. Plus that battle system is super fun IMO.

Hope they bring the gacha west - I've sunk a ton of hours into it since its Japanese release, and while it's not without its flaws I think it's a really solid game in its own right.

Plus, you get to play as Heathcote!

I know the way the game is structured put off a lot of people but I honestly really enjoyed the small scope a lot of the stories went for. Something like Alfyn's story stuck with me even if there's nothing really grand happening.

Despite the total lack of party interaction I still genuinely came out liking most of the characters.

The game gave me a fantastic first impresion to be honest, but gameplay problem start to appear when i've finish all character first chapter...then the game became a cakewalk... i've heard post boss are very challenging, but i got tired way before reaching them sadly....

Picked it up from the $10 clearance sale after meaning to play it for years. I think it's aesthetically the strongest game on the Switch. I know people have gripes with the characters being narratively siloed but if you go into it expecting that (and that is what they said it would be, during development...) I think it's perfectly reasonable a choice: eight short stories about eight people.

I love this game so much! It's true the characters never properly coming together was a pretty big disappointment, but I still super love what it gave us. The stories on their own were still charming, the characters were all great, the music fantastic, and the art direction was omg amazing. I really look forward to the sequel and hope the mobile game eventually comes to global. 🙏

People always say this and maybe they should try to replay JRPGs from the 16bit era some time. The stories and characters back then were often way less developed than what you see in Octopath Traveler. In their defense, it was also partly because of the technological limitations at the time and sometimes poor localization due to the small text boxes and small localization teams.

I liked the music, graphics and battle system, but the slapdash way the story is presented is really unfortunate. I would gladly sacrifice the freedom to pick any character at any chapter for a coherent, overarching narrative (the text dump at the optional end boss rush doesn't count). I also wish the NPCs would move around a little bit. I didn't notice it at first, but every single character in the game is just standing there like a statue or a set piece in a diorama, just completely devoid of life. It's kind of unsettling.

I loved what I played of it but I put it down a couple of years ago. I finished three characters (I think) and got to the boss for a couple others. I basically got tired of playing 45 minute boss fights only to lose anyway.

I might pick it back up later and I know I will be suckered into getting the sequel or follow up game.

Deeply flawed game that absolutely fucking nails it's aesthetics, art, music and combat system. The music editing especially is such a phenomenal exercise in how to mix and remix single tracks around character moments. Whoever did the music and sound editing for this game gave more of a shit about the characters than the general writing.

It's insanely formulaic and stilted outside of that though, hardly a game worth praising highly but it's a great foundation for something potentially excellent in the future.

two things: where is the sequel and why didn't they use this engine to remake FF6?

They said back in '18 that they wanted to take 3-4 years on a sequel, so one is likely coming down the pipe this year or next. Modulo COVID delays of course. Meanwhile they launched the prequel mobile game back in October, which is a pretty solid little RPG in its own right.

The story was a 7/10 but the rest of the game was a 10/10 for me. Graphics, soundtrack, gameplay are all stellar imo. One of my favourite RPGs of all time.

Despite the music is superb and the art is beautiful, I just can't find the will to finish this game. Nope. With a party that hardly interacts with each other, not so interesting stories and how the party members disappear in each character story, it doesn't grab me.

love this game so much. it's really a perfect mixture of elements done right starting with the battle system, ost, and graphics. love the variety of towns and areas to explore. the flexibility in the game was really nice as well, felt like there were no wrong answers with the class combinations and you could dial in some fun shit.

I surprisingly loved it despite it's story/characters issues.

Fuck the true final boss tho.

The battle system is one of the most fun ever for a turn based RPG
And the music was amazing
I think the VO was underrated too personally
I enjoyed the smaller stories 🤷‍♂️

I'm playing through this game right now while streaming at night and it's just such a delightful little game. I do one character's story a night. It's formulaic, but not in a bad way? The combat is addicting and the environments are so pretty, even for someone who's tired of sprites.

I want another of these to be honest.

What was the original OT title for this game?? Can't recall the exact wording, but it was a play on some quote from Schreier saying some early impressions were hyperbolic in their praise of the game. Remember dying laughing seeing it around release before it was edited

Anyway, I loved everything about this game outside the story and characters, which were huge letdowns in every storyline. Hoping a sequel can deliver better on this front. Was still a cozy playthrough that I'll probably give another go at some point

I finally started digging into it around Christmas break from work and have completed half of the Chapter 4 quests. I have been really enjoying it. I find it to be a nice throwback type RPG

It's more fun if you take your time with it. A bad game to marathon and rush thru.
This 100%

Take it easy and enjoy each story for what they are. Choose some other characters to play their stories more and change it up from time to time. Feel free to go off the beaten path and explore.

Very fun game.

I like the music and finding out the boss sprites. And, I do appreciate the visual style quite a bit.

The characters, the dialogue and the generic almost everything reminds me why I dropped this a year ago. The combat gimmick was interesting in the beginning, but always fishing for those stuns got old pretty fast.

After reading the post game plot, I would have liked for that to be easier to access and more tied in. It Would have added a lot for me, rather than little hints here and there and then having the real plot locked behind difficult boss battles.

Currently on a first playthrough and I'm really enjoying it, the only downer is the break system can be annoying at times.

I've just met my fourth character Ophilia after starting with Olberic.

Outside of the music and presentation it's a deathly repetitive game. I loved my first hours with it, but the game never changes. Hell, you never even get any traversal options outside of walking. I managed to put in 40 hours, but at least half of that was me hoping it would get better, it never did. The overall structure is awful and everything feels the same, from the "dungeons" to the towns. It's a very limited game and the demo for it is basically everything the game has to offer.
