My son is obsessed with Roblox and we often play co-op together. It's a neat thing and now he's learning how to create content which means learning how to use an editing system and some light scripting.

Is there a video that explains generally what you do in that game?
There is no one game - it's thousands of games designed in Roblox Studio. It's a flexible tool and games can be just about anything. My son loves Flood Escape 2 which is a coop platform game in which you need to stay ahead of the flood while making your way to an exit.

My daughter plays this and Minecraft on the daily. She also watches some youtubers who play them both too.

Huh, I just heard someone talking about it being the big thing with kids on a podcast and I just assumed it was a actual toy or something.

When me and my buddy in my CS program would spend dozens of hours together during the week coding. His son would watch videos on tablets or TV etc. And many times they were Roblox videos, he's like 5 or 6. Tons of them were "music videos" created in Roblox of popular songs. They were the most literal interpretations of the lyrics possible kind of videos. The videos had millions of views. It was wild to see something so off my radar being so damn popular.

I mean look at this. I just googled Roblox and went to videos. Look at how mundane this video is. And how popular it is.

8.5 million views and 21 minutes long

my nephews and nieces that are like 6-12 are super into it along with minecraft and various shooters. really is a generational thing. if you haven't heard of it, you're just not around any kids because you'll inevitably run into it lol

It's weird that 100 million people can play something that can seemingly have no popular culture impact (besides I think a few quick-to-clearance toys from a few years back?).

Roblox toys were everywhere the last time I was at a toy store. I was also surprised, I didn't think that many people knew about it. There are films, books, clothes... So yeah, it's pretty huge.

I first saw roblox when it came to the iOS app store. Thought it was a little freemium game that was new at the time, boy I was wrong. I looked it up since I was curious about it, and it turned out to be massively popular, and existed for many, many years. I think I did see some roblox toys at stores, but I thought they were just some lego knockoffs.

My kids have played this for years on their PCs and never spent any money on it, they have a load of costumers and accessories. They seem to spend a lot of time on a game within Roblox and then move on to the next thing that catches their interest, while they have a couple of games they return to over and over. My daughter has played the same roleplay servers for a long time and seems to be having a blast.

If I didn't have kids myself I don't think I'd ever have taken notice of Roblox so I can see why many people never heard about it.

My 7 year old loves Roblox. The games are basic as fuck and pretty glitchy but the kids dont care.

Yeah. I know it's mainly targeting kids, but it still surprises me that a game this big gets zero coverage from mainstream gaming publications.

Being an Xbox console exclusive has something to do with that I suspect.

a bit like ooblets which 99% of the gaming world knew nothing about until 2 days about

Isn't the 91m player base for MC nearly a year old?

It didn't grow its base at all since we got those numbers?

Quite possibly.

Also MAU isn't a standard unit of measurement, we don't know what the definition is for both companies. It could be how many users have booted the game or it could be how many players have spent day 30 minutes playing

Maybe no cultural impact for you, but I'm pretty sure everyone in my daughter's class knows about it, and she's constantly asking to borrow my phone so she can play it.

My daughter is obsessed with this game and youtubers who play it. I had no idea what it was until she showed me youtube vids pf it last year and i downloaded it on my phone and ipad so we can play together.

Turns out my nephew, my friend's nephews and nieces, friend's kids, EVERY KID plays it. It's massive since it's on mobile as well as pc and xbox.

The games are pretty meh for adult gamers but it's very easy to see why children love it.
