I've made a few posts with a possible explanation. Basically, I think there's a simple strain gauge on the ring surface under the housing where the Joycon attaches, wired to the Joycon's rail. The joycon then supplies power to the strain gauge, and uses its own circuitry to detect changes in the strain gauge's resistance, thus making a proper bending sensor.

This is almost surely the way it works. I was initially thinking some kind of sensor where you put your hands but this is such a simple solution that if it's not it, the engineers are waaaaay overthinking it. I've used these before. They work and are used in all kinds of design and engineering uses so they can be reliable.

I love everything about this. I miss Wii/DS Nintendo so much and this looks like something from that era.

Also shame Sakurai dislikes fun now, so we won't get this character in Smash :(
The problem is that the characters for too recent. If the game does well, I can easily see her showing up in the next Smash game.

Looks nice.... I wanted to get a fitness game for the Switch, I'll wait and see if I pick Fitness Boxing or this.

Finally got around to watching the video. Looks cool to me. I wonder if it'll actually be good for working out. $80 seems a little expensive...maybe I'll wait for a price drop.

This has no business looking this good.

Back in the day, I used Wii Fit to lose weight. I lost almost 60 lbs that way.

Still no sign of this being available digitally in NA. Sigh...I'll likely have to give this a skip unfortunately :/

Why does a lack of digital release mandate skipping the game altogether?
Because of where I live, I have to either buy digitally or import. Importing costs a lot of money. For example, the last game I imported was Kid Icarus Uprising, which ended up costing the equivalent of $85US. I don't do that anymore.

This would end up around $145US

Why would a game requiring a physical peripheral be available digitally?
I hoped you would be able to buy the ring and strap separately, and then also buy a digital version. Wii Fit U was available digitally.

man, i can't believe i caught a corporate goof for once. wonder if they'll cancel my preorder.

Nah, ShopTo are good people.

Sometimes between pre-ordering an item and its dispatch a product's price can change. With our pre-orders we have a price guarantee should the price of an item increase after you've placed your pre-order with us. This means we will honour the original price and the price you pay will be listed in your pre-order list.

If we reduce a pre-order in price we will also automatically reduce the cost of your pre-order to this as well. Please note in the event of an obvious pricing error this would not apply and we will notify you of this via e-mail. Our decision on if to honour a price in these circumstances is final.

As a free to start if you already had a board. After a month it locks you out till you sync the pedometer.

Wouldn't you have to import the ring and strap, or is there some kind of steep import tax on games or something?

Right, but the pedometer was available separately.

Yes.

It would still work out cheaper (assuming the ring and strap cost $20 or even $30). Games (for whatever reason) have a high(er) import duty.

Having to swap the game card every time I want to play this is a barrier of entry to fitting this into my daily schedule. I agree, I prefer to grab games I'll return to digitally.

Yeah, that makes sense!

Ouch. That sucks. My condolences. :(

yeah, I'm another person who lost a ton of weight with Wii Fit's help (like 70 pounds, I think? it was a while ago)

taking the gamified parts of that and making it even gamier is super appealing to me

I lost 40. Gamifying fitness is beautiful, a saturous idea.

It's weird that I've never gone this route before. I was 250 when I was 18 and dropped down to 190 by walking extensively. Now I'm 32 and close to 250 again (thanks, daily health meds) and it didn't even occur to me until this game was announced that I can at least partially drop back down through my #1 hobby!

Have you considered Fitness Boxing? There's a demo on the eShop.

Wow, congrats. This inspires me!
To be honest with you, i did more than wii fit (most weight lost are done in the kitchen), but I looked forward to doing my daily weigh ins. It was awesome seeing that graph and motivated me to keep doing it. I lift weights now but I can honestly say that Wii Fit played a big part in me being a fitness nut today.

Great to hear about people who also had success stories with Wii Fit. I was very overweight when Wii Fit came around, but I really started using the mixed routines in Wii Fit Plus. I selected about 40 mins of exercise and did it every weekday morning for 18 months. I also improved my diet, but Wii Fit was 90% of my exercise. I lost over 100lbs.

I've since been up and down, but never anywhere remotely near my heaviest. I really hope RingFit helps others on a fitness journey, and I'm excited to try it too.

Have you heard of anyone having success with or really enjoying Fitness Boxing? I was somewhat devastated when I saw that it had gotten the Wii Fit style treatment, and had assumed (until now) that it was the best we were going to get on Switch. I played the demo, but it was such a step down in quality from previous Fit games that I just couldn't handle it.
