Here's an article he wrote about a month ago addressing some of his critics for his nomination, including some named in this thread: https://www.dexerto.com/opinion/richard-lewis-what-do-you-do-when-harassers-are-journalists-1153511
You should consider going down the rabbit hole that is that article. It's basically him going off on Victoria (she is literally the only journalist he has something against, yet bases the entire rant on being targeted by lots of them). He has link after link to show how terrible a person she is, then he tries to paint himself as a saint who tried to warn people of Riot's sexism problem. He forgets to mention that the reason he believes she is "blackmailing" him is not because she hates him, but because she is being harassed by him and his followers.

He says he's been vocal about Riot sexism for YEARS, and yet, the one article he links, is from when Kotaku ran their piece, and he goes on and on about how "it was not his place to talk about it". Apparently, he knew about all that, and In the same article, he talks about not believing in conspiracy theories, yet he defends Gamergate in a round about way: "There wasn't even a single tweet from their editor Ben Kuchera, patient zero for the epidemic of goony beard men in games journalism, who usually wastes no time in publicly condemning anything problematic coming from gaming culture." He then goes on to remind the readers that, despite Cecilia being a good writer, she still makes mistakes and isn't a fan of cis white men, so beware.

What the fuck is this gamer gate spewing bullshit about replacing esport celebs with journalist cronies? Are you fucking kidding? What a fucking dipshit.

Fuck anyone who gave this moron a standing ovation and fuck this industry for awarding a shit stain an award and giving him a platform to moan about this.

Fucking Hell. What a piece of shit.

Richard Lewis said:
Some journalists today, including a few who write about video games, like to exist in a quantum superstate of being. They want all the benefits of being a public figure – verification on all platforms, invites to conferences, respect at all times for their opinions – and yet simultaneously want none of the responsibility that it comes with. You aren't allowed to tweet at them when they tweet about you. You aren't allowed to critique their positions. You aren't allowed to hold them up to ridicule when their work is substandard. They file this reasonable discourse alongside the harassment.

Oh hey. He can project too.
Leave it to the game industry to reward carny scumbags like Lewis.

I like how he talks about the eSports scene as if like he personally owns it or is the only one reporting on it. Weird flex.

This reads so closely to how right wing assholes go about when they describe immigrants and the supposed double standards at play. It's no wonder some people are so happy to plant their flag with this guy so readily. Telling it like it is, amirite?

I guess I'm old as it's new to me but I like the whole "carny" thing. Video games in general are very "carny."

That said, please stop writing "eSports."

Sincerely,

Mr. esports

- eSports Awards

- Richard Lewis (an esports journalist and former journalist at Breitbart...

- Unsurpisingly you can see DrDisrespect giving him a standing ovation during the speech.

giphy.gif
Esports easily a billion dollar industry, I don't understand why you'd think having an award event is something funny.

Cool. Hopefully the gaming press and industry will now take a stand and ignore those "E Sports Awards" organizers from now until eternity, whoever they are, 'cause I sure as fuck never heard of them.

Will they though? I'm not sure.

CSGO and LOL players would be in a much worse situation than they are now. Richard Lewis was the one to publish information which impacted the way Riot, ESL and esports orgs dealt with players.

CSGO match fixing, MYM drama, CSGO league monopolies, orgs not paying players, calling out dodgy espots events/orgs, Riot and LOL subreddit connections etc.

You can dislike the person RL, his political views or behavior, but you cannot deny the impact he had with the reporting on esports scene.
Fuck him.

Yes. Patrick Klepek's master plan is to take out the esports scene with smear pieces and replace them all with his cronies

Odd that Lewis isn't in Era's good books considering he's done great things for the LGBTQ community. Not that it matters but you'd imagine the man has scored some karma points in that regard.

Not saying this would excuse any bad behaviour otherwise of course but as someone who has followed him for quite a few years now: he's alright.

Edit: seems like he might have deleted the tweet about how great of a guy Milo is, here's his Breitbart work

It was a year that saw the media endorse the "listen and believe" ideology pushed by radical feminists that saw innocent men smeared for rapes that never occurred. Meanwhile, those same feminists crowing about "rape culture" remain tight-lipped when we have an increasing volume of rapes and sexual assaults at the hands of immigrants from predominantly Islamic countries.

If only we had a 7 page thread of pointing out how Lewis is a piece of shit with bigoted views...

Just out of curiosity, what do you think he's done for the LGBTQ community?

It's really weird how this thread starts with the OP saying that the guy wrote for a site for far right whackjob assholes, everyone else said "oh he wrote for a website for far right whackjob assholes", and now everyone's shocked to discover that he's a far right whackjob asshole.

"These dastardly news organizations are shaping their stories to a narrative that's designed to push an agenda!" — man who wrote for Breitbart.

Hey it's better to actually assess things critically instead of not thinking through on the topic at all. Most of te trash posts simply said they knew he was from Breitbart so they don't need to know anything else about him.

I don't like Lewis but since this is about his impact on esports I'm going to make a value judgement based on his contributions there.

I'm sure you would also view companies not paying their employees assholes? What about tournament orngaizers not paying out their prize pools? Or how about tounrmanet organizers running events so poorly team managers have to juggle shit at the last minute in countries they aren't fluent in the language? What about players being kicked off teams with verbal promises not being honored? Or players getting black balled by in their home country because of arrangements only made verbally team managers didn't approve of how they left the team?

What about teams or 3rd parties gaming the system to rob people of their money through betting sites?

There are various degrees of being an asshole and hurting someone's financial security is more important than hurting someone's reputation and in most cases Lewis has had such incidents backfire on himself because most people understand he is an asshole.

All you are doing is suggesting you don't care how any thing gets fixed so people's lives are materially better.

Waypoint specifically has made some important contributions to the esports scene more than Lewis cares to admit. But if he wants to call out their mistakes as well as the mistakes of the other two it isn't unreasonable to take a minute and refelct on whether or not they have made more significant contributions in improving esports than Lewis did.
No, I do care. I'm suggesting to be better.

Ninja isn't esports (anymore, given Lewis would be making more comments on his halo playing days), he is a streamer. Different.

unless this award show also does streamers (which why?), I don't actually think that falls into what he is dogging the other journos for.

He is trash for other reasons.
it was an example, people generally call out places like Kotaku & others because they put a spotlight on shit behaviour from streamers/e-sports players etc.

I'm glad we went through the "we need more nuanced conversation about this person who wrote for breitbart" only to waste time digging up all the alt right bullshit that obviously comes from being a writer at breitbart, just so we can arrive back at the place we started of saying fuck this guy.

What are some examples and links?

Not just esports, but for example like Kotaku using peoples quotes out of context in an article about how Smash players smell bad (they asked a player if they're ok with them being quoted that way, they said no, they did it anyway). Or when they thought the lyrics from the Persona DLC was a slur...or the woman who posted that questionable porn article. There's a lot that just seems to go up that's either wrong, dishonest or just incomprehensible designed to generate clicks.

Ok but you just gave 0 examples of bad takes on Esports, which is what this thread is about.

The first example is explicitly about the tournament scene, and intentional misrepresentation to generate an article. The guy in the OP seems like a pretty terrible spokesperson either way going by what people are saying.

Maybe one day it will actually conduct itself like a billion dollar industry too. And cut down a bit on treating women like shit and general toxicity. Or give awards to people who very much embody those things.
I have about as much faith in that happening as I do, say, in the US becoming a socialist utopia, but hey, it's good to have dreams.

Call out Kotaku and polygon, whatever, but I can't let him talk shit about my man Austin Walker. Fuck this dude. Whatever his contributions to real journalism, he just sounds like another bitter baby tossing red meat to right wing losers.

I mean, I was prepared to change my mind in the unlikely event that his articles on Breitbart weren't full of content one would expect of Breitbart but it's good to have empirical evidence, I suppose.

Depressingly ugly empirical evidence.
He got a standing ovation from that speech at the awards ceremony too. I guess it's a common sentiment in eSports.

I hate this fucking industry sometimes. I need a blacklist of outlets, awards and people that enable platforms for these horrible assholes.
Check out what websites and influencers aren't allowed to be given attention on Era, and you're already off to a good start. Breitbart is a given, since it's a shithole. Then it's just a matter of asking around when an abhorrent person like Dr. Disrespect or Destiny (the streamer, not the game) is the topic of conversation. You'll pretty quickly figure out who is and isn't worth paying attention to in the industry.

The first example is explicitly about the tournament scene, and intentional misrepresentation to generate an article.
Unless I'm mistaken the player you're talking about, they
reached out for comment, the player refused and also suggested they kill the story. The story was about the increasing amount of tournament organizers tweeting out reminders to clean themselves and likely signal boosting that message. I dont see the hit piece.
