I remember having a bunch of wired toy cars that only had forward and reverse and reverse caused the car to turn to the right while backing up. Same idea as the Lefty RX. That's all I was allowed to have because RC of any kind was too expensive.

I like Escape from Monkey Island just fine to this day and it was neither my first adventure game nor entry in the series. It is also the only LucasArts Monkey Island game I didn´t need a guide for. I beat it fair and square on the PS2 which is the definitive version of the game. It got better controls and graphics and no bugs. 7/10
The Monkey Kombat section at the very end is hell on earth but gave me the same feeling when I finish the extra bosses in a Souls like game. I hated almost every second but ending the madness makes you feel something. Escape from Monkey Island is the Dark Souls of adventure games?

Yes, this absolutely is a great direction to transition towards or at least hopefully branch out on occasion. This was the best epsiode in years (and that is not an insult to any preveous work, moreso about the new focus being so rich with insights and perspectives).

Just listened to the Trials of Mana episode and was pleasantly surprised at how much Jeremy, Nadia, and Chris enjoyed the remake. Based on most reviews (and my own feelings of the original game), I didn't think the remake was of much note, but now I'm actually interested in playing it sometime.

Just wait until the PS4 becomes retro. Then we can hear about how Knack is the Dark Souls of Knack games.

Edit: Bob may not have seen Die Hard until this year, but he pretty much got the gist of it from the Bobby's World Pilot:

2021 Knack appears in the Snyder Cut, 2022 Knack in Smash aka PS All-Stars 2, 2023 Knack = hidden retro gem. Such is the prophecy.

Got it Bob. Escape from Monkey Island is the Dark Souls 2 of adventure games.
Dark Souls 2 is better than at least the original version of Demon´s Souls, Sekiro and every other From game that isn´t a Soulslike so it´s their 3rd best game. Bronze is still good.
The real Dark Souls of adventure games is likely a Sierra game or some FMV abortion but I´ll throw Theresia for the DS into the mix. And I finished both campaigns!

I listened the Final Fantasy Legend trilogy podcast from a couple years ago twice over the weekend thanks to a long drive. I am excited about the upcoming re-release. Kind of fun to listen to these and hear the wishes and speculation come true - wanting the trilogy on Switch, suggesting maybe Scarlet Grace will come west ... I believe there was even mention of Frontier being remade with the final character arc included. It's all happened!

Count me as one of those who remembers FF Legend II very fondly. It wasn't the first RPG I ever played, as I know I was into the Dragon Warrior series and had seen/heard FF on NES. But it was the first RPG I ever owned. I got a Game Boy in fall 92 after having sold my NES in 1990 and regretting it. Learning my lesson, I've kept nearly every game I bought ever since. And FFL2 was one of the first games I got along with Tetris and Metroid II that fall ... making it one of the longest-held games in my collection. I popped in my Game Boy the other day and the game save is still in tact, too. Crazy. I know I had friends who owned the first and third games, so my experience tracks with the reader mail - these were pretty influential games in the early GB library.

I wish I would have been more aware of this trilogy's place in Squaresoft history over the years, as I can't say I really had much into the SaGa games much at all until news of this re-issue. Never played any of the rest, but now I'm really intrigued. I plan to get this trilogy to relive some old monochrome moments (cheers to relatively short RPGs) and then see about some of the other titles in the SaGa series - oh, and Octopath Traveler, too....

I love these episodes of Retroknots with non US centric topics. Do the BBC Micro next!

Laughed heartily at "Harry Dean Anderson (that's Maguyver!)" in the Die Hard episode lol

Also, Takagi isn't the first person to die in the movie, it's the security guards at the front desk and near the elevators!

Get it together guys, c'mon.....

I have Earthworm Jim on a DSi. It is one of the only games that due to license issues was non transferable once the DSi XL and 3DS came out.

One day it's going to be worth thousands like a PS4 with PT on it.

This is a more foolproof plan then Willie's retirement grease.

Also, that Intellivision Amico game looks like Earthworm Jim was added to Super Shantae Maker.

That's weird; I have EWJ on 3DS, bought on a 3DS. Is it a US thing?

It probably came out separately for it later. Or the license was weird and just didn't allow system transfers.

www.destructoid.com

A list of DSiWare that cannot be transfered to your 3DS

Backwards compatibility is cool, but it’s never 100 percent. I think back to that miniature Genesis, the Genesis 3. It...

I was never able to beat Softporn Adventure. I played it not too long after I had played Leisure Suit Larry so I still remembered most of what to do. But I got stuck when I got to the apple. In Softporn, the apple is rotten. That stumped me. I couldn't figure what to do with the rotten apple. Then I looked at the apple and found the seeds but still couldn't figure out what to do with the seeds and where. I assume I had to plant them somewhere and the apple tree would grow instantly somehow but I never figured out where I needed to do that.

Listening to the Earthworm Jim Christmas episode, and I am shocked that neither Bob nor Henry brought up Doug TenNapel. Central figure of the creation of the character, Doug TenNapel and his awful politics, why the devil did ye not bring him up and rip into him? I get that this is more about the show, but come on.

No use in bringing down the holidays by making easy jokes about that miserable loser.

Earthworm Jim might have been the very first videogame adaptation I saw (in Russia) and I saw it before I ever played a videogame. Unless I saw Mortal Kombat first. That´s what happens if you grow up in poverty. My life thankfully turned around in the summer of 1997 by leaving Post Collapse Russia.
I would love to do an Inflation Wiki joke but I didn't find it. What sort of stuff is Bob looking up that google would suggest such a result? Hmm. Suspicious.

RN is correct on one thing. Batfleck is awful. Under the direction of Joss Whedon and only him. Affleck himself famously despised working on the reshoots and close to none of his original scenes made it into the 2017 film. The best live-action Batman will thankfully return in 3 months and the world will never be the same.
David Ayer also had to leave Affleck scenes on the cutting room floor. For now. The director's cut of Daredevil 2003 is also ok. Aka Batman in red.

Congratulations to Bob and Nina !

Quick question, as I just subscribed to the Patreon exclusive episodes tier : I'm still using iTunes, not Apple Podcasts, for getting my podcasts and even though I entered the private RSS link, which gave me access to the latest episode, all the previous exclusive episodes still show up as their preview versions. How do I get the exclusive episodes without having to manually download them (which doesn't give me the illustration and treats the episodes as regular MP3s) ?

iTunes should have a second entry for the Patreon feed. In my iTunes it's listed as "Retronauts Patreon RSS Feed". It doesn't overwrite the public feed, but you will probably need to tweak the private feed settings to pull the old episodes (set "Limit Episodes" to "Off" I think). And you'll obviously want to unsubscribe the public feed.

Quarantine is when you are confined to your house or a facility and are unable to leave at all. For Covid, the standard quarantine time is 14 days. It's not something that lasts for months and months.

California did not go into "quarantine" in March, it went into lockdown where people were still allowed to leave their homes for exercise, and to go to the supermarket and pharmacy.

Is this in reference to something?

Great guests on the Crash Podcast Jeremy. Bring them both back.

Also don't feel bad about not knowing about the 99x. I didn't know about it until earlier this year when there was a thread about Tiger bringing back the handhelds and someone posted a pic of one.

got to comment on the fate of atlantis cast, where bob is talking about in the prelude indy seemingly dies while routing through stuff, and as a sierra kid, i did just alt-f4 and said 'eh ill come back to this later'

this was in 2020. hah

more random: i think there was a guest who was referring to bad US/Euro 16 bit platformers as 'airplane hanger games' in the last year or two, does anyone know who said that?

RE: The Indy episode.

All I could think of during that whole exchange. lol

Also, isn't the N64 Indy game supposed to be fairly decent? Am I wrong? It was one of those silly rental-exclusive US-only N64 releases but I remember it getting good reviews.
