Reminder that Doom is 25 years old and the modding scene is only getting more ridiculous by the year. There's also some excellent stuff in the Quake community, but Doom's just an endless stream of cool stuff. Cool new stuff. And a convenient award thing every year, the Cacowards, which can't capture all the best stuff but give it a damn good try.

You like the new Deus Ex games? That was the highlight of a recent weekend for me.

Dusk also owns, and Amid Evil.

Shame about Ion Fury's team being led by a transphobic bigot, and IIRC Hedon's dev is a shit as well.

Too bad all those mods are PC only. I don't really game much on my laptop these days.

If I could hug this thread, I would.

Devil Daggers is one of the most brilliantly designed games in recent memory. Amid Evil was pretty great even if my excitement for it petered off towards the end. Cannot wait for Wrath.

Hmm, never thought about playing wads on my phone. But, what app do you recommend or need to start playing? Would love to give it a try.
Final Judgement is the one I know on iPhone. Controls are OK. You will need to feed it your copy of doom2.wad (or whatever iwad you're using) but it takes files through the files app. There are a few different control options.

Scythe's the megawad I was playing last time I loaded it up, apparently.

I really enjoyed Dusk and it's quakey vibes. Amid Evil is a must play if you liked Hexen/Heretic. Some really great weapons/spells and monster in there.

I would also add Overload to this list - for everyone who remembers Descent :)

Oops. Forgot to mention I'm on android. I'm gonna search around to find out the best way to play wads on android.

Android's easy mode for source ports!

The axe in Amid Evil's great, it's chunky and useful and when you swing it it draws the target closer, so it's got a much longer effective range than you'd expect. It's nothing like the Quake axe.

Rather enjoyed Nightmare Reaper. It's very much in the Rise of the Triad splinter of the classic FPS genre.

I've got Dusk and Amid Evil waiting for me, but I just need to make the time to get into them. Same with the remaster of Blood. Got three episodes left of it.

A real shame about Ion Fury and anything this new 3D Realms touches. Apparently they got the wrong message and thought being casually bigoted assholes was part of the throwback charm.

Speaking of which. I'm curious what the deal with the Hedon guy is. I know he draws porn of the main character, but that alone isn't too much of a problem, right?

Bought and downloaded Delta Touch for android for around 2 bucks and managed to run doom on it. Will play around with it for awhile before testing out mods.

Dusk, Amid Evil and Ion Fury got me back into the shooter genre in a big way.

I completely fell off the genre years ago as shooters got more and more gritty & self-serious. But the recent string of killer retro-shooters reminded how fun simple, twitch arcade-style gameplay can be.

Absolutely floor by top to bottom quality found in Dusk, Amid Evil & Ion Fury. Man, what a trip.

Amid Evil was fantastic, my favourite of the bunch. Even if Dusk has better movement and some better level design, the enemy variety, visuals and weapons of Amid Evil were fantastic.

Thanks for adding a new game to my wishlist, had no idea this existed. There's so much happening that I can find tons of cool stuff!

Just watched the trailer for this, looks fucking good. On my wishlist it goes!

One of the things that took be by surprise with these retro shooters is how well they perform on modern tech.

I remember back in '99 upgrading to a Voodoo2 card just to play Quake/Half-Life and even then it struggled to get 30fps at a low 4:3 resolution.

But today I can revisit this classic era of shooters at a blistering 120fps on a high-res, liquid-smooth G Sync monitor.

It makes my brain do backflips of glee as it tries to reconcile vintage gameplay loops on modern hardware.

Until you play Quake 2 RTX and watch your FPS drop to double digits. Developers could make visual showcases out of these games, with RTX etc, but it would go against the aesthetic appeal of these games. Consumers want these games to look like they're straight out of the 90s, and a positive side effect of that is that they don't take a beastly PC to run well.

Fire up Doom 2 with Russian Overkill on a big slaughtermap and watch your FPS hit single digits when you fire the big stuff.

Dusk runs amazingly, though, and so do a bunch of the newer games - it's only when someone does something really stupid with the older ones that you get a slideshow.

Anyone remember STRAFE? It kind of kicked off this whole renaissance. I backed the KS but never really got to the game, and every time a thread like this comes up nobody mentions it. Where did it go wrong?

Man, didn't know we were in a new age 90s shooter swan song right now. I knew of a few but not most of the others.

I am going to have alot of fun this weekend!

My gosh, Prodeus looks amazing.

It was a rogue-like. There were a few retro inspired shooters before this latest batch, but what separates these ones is the great level design and enemy/weapon/tileset variety. People like old-school shooters for the smart levels, not just shooting stuff. Rogue-likes have boring level design

It was? I only played it very briefly during the beta and honestly didn't remember. So it's all randomly-generated? Well that explains it. Really not a fan of that type of design either, and now I don't regret not going back. Glad they got to make their game and glad to help, though. Did enjoy the music and aesthetics.

If that's that case, yeah, that'll kill it. I only like a very small amount of rogue like games as it is, much less FPS rogue likes.

Gimme that classic FPS mission structure and let me go nuts.

Project Warlock is pretty fun. The level designs are pretty flat and basic but they really nailed the gun play, blasting apart monsters *feels* great.

Dusk is the king though, but once again we get a retro shooter revival thread that ignores OVERLOAD

DO
NOT
SLEEP
ON
OVERLOAD

Overload is so good! It's a shame how much it got overlooked in these classic shooter discussions and that the developer had to disband. I'm still super glad it got made though.

Yall need to check out the demo for ULTRAKILL

It's like someone tried to specifically engineer catnip for me.
A fast-paced FPS that is heavily influenced by DMC (including parrying projectile attacks!) that controls like a dream.

The texture warping can be disabled if the look is not to your liking.

Oh, will totally check this out. Kinda dig the texture warping too, though I do tend to turn off some of the more retro flavoured visuals (like pixelization in Dusk).

My biggest gripe for the game was that it touted being 1993 yet it had synthwave instead of butt-rock

I was looking for a decent TSS on Switch. Browsed around today for some options. Decided to jump in on Assault Android Cactus+ since I've heard good things about it.

Played for a bit and I'm already satisfied. Seems just right. While I enjoy the genre, I prefer games that have set stages rather than a pure arcade structure, so this works for me.

I still need to get back to Nuclear Throne. Great game, but I'm not feeling the roguelike thing right now. On that note, the eShop is sorely missing Monolith, which is quite possibly my favorite TSS ever.

nah, they made a plenty fun one.

Game is a bit more willing to work with the abstract end of 3D combat, but it's the closest thing to a style on em fps

I mean, that looks very appealing to a tiny niche of people who are willing and able to memorise every spawn location and practice to the point where they can basically play out each level like a choreographed dance routine.

To normal players however, it's just a frustrating exercise in insanely fast foes who can hit you from miles away and who constantly spawn on all sides of you with no warning.

DUSK is one of the best games I've played, such a fantastic arsenal, atmosphere, combat, music. Hell, everything.

I even love the artstyle, it imitates the old games but still has enough stuff that those games couldn't handle that it makes it look great (The meat grinder, for example)

Plenty of normal players don't get that good and still play for the challenge and learning systems. Dsync does an atrocious job explaining itself because it deals with so much abstract visual language, but once you know what exactly are rock, paper, n scissors in the game it's pretty straight forward in terms of dealing with any enemies, especially long distance ones.

Tho I understand the sour take on the game, because again: it's maybe the worst game I've played in terms of explaining fucking anything.
