These seem to be making the rounds more quickly now, first FFVII and IX and now someone released an AI made upscale of REmake's backgrounds. You can see some comparisons below. Maybe it's placebo but I just tested it on the beginning few areas and it certainly seems crisper than the base backgrounds. Judge for yourself!

https://reupscaleproject.blogspot.com/2019/01/release-time_31.html

REupscale project is a mod that upscales and corrects, using Topaz's A.I. Gigapixel, the background textures of Resident Evil HD Remaster.
The textures are the kept at the same original resolution (1920x1440) but they are obtained by downsampling images twice the resolution. Some textures use the Gamecube original source (~90%) while others are upscaled from the HD Remastered texture (~10%).
Here are a few screenshots showing the results:

I highly recommend using the torrent link of the main file that's listed in the comments as mega.nz has a bandwidth limit that capped out for me during download. Enjoy!

Hmm, I wonder if this inadvertently cleans up any grunge that's supposed to be originally present in any textures. Those pictures posted at least seem to be a direct improvement.

Oh man. Hopefully someone is working on RE Zero. One of the few I haven't played yet. Got it installed and ready to go.

If i was non the wiser, i would have guessed the AI upscaled images were the original uncompressed source assets from Capcom's vault or something.... unreal!

Downloading this now after; after binging RE2make for a long time, I might have a reason to revisit REmake again. Might install reshade as well as these textures.

Also RE2 OG backgrounds upressed when? How did REmake get done first?

The thing that impresses me the most about this tech is not how it just cleans up and creates sharper results of the original, but how it manages to seemingly add more detail to it. It's fucking black magic.

Had a quick go on this, amazing work <3 ESRGAN continues to be witchcraft, so excited for every new texture pack that releases with it

Just wish there was a way to bump the game's internal resolution up from 1920x1440, I reckon it could go to 4k without the characters sticking out too much from the upscaled backgrounds

No videos? Would be good to have footage of the new backgrounds, not sure if I want to risk a download without knowing what to expect beyond these screenshots.

Edit: *insert Thanos gif*

It actually removes a lot of detail in some scenes. Look at this comparison image - https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kf_4Fkc3...b2v5tkDWhZACPcBGAYYCw/s1920/Comparison_17.png

The floorboards have a lot of detail nuked.

This one is pretty bad as well - https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dvSZenBz...l2TSISCgJygCPcBGAYYCw/s1920/Comparison_14.png

Not as bad, but still detail lost - https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PY9DMlch...BnQLrSNoI6wCPcBGAYYCw/s1920/Comparison_06.png

Whereas it obviously does well here - https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-4nWM5o5w...Dm0eYmco4dQ0wV1a__OuMckUgCLcBGAs/s1600/03.png

Ok, maybe it depends on the source because look at this example: https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Kd6jSFC0...ZOMh4hsfEbNHh_5jjd0N216WwCLcBGAs/s1600/12.png The floor inside the fireplace is massively more detailed.

Looks like its mostly removing compression artifacts and cleaning up some of the bagagge from textures that have been scaled up, added filters, scaled down, sharpened then compressed.

Everybody works differently but in my experience no project has a perfect archive of HD source textures. For one, an HD texture used to be 512x512 lol, thats really pedantic now, source files tend to get fucked up before they make it into a game because most artists share work and sometimes theres multiple "sources" for the same texture, or a final edit is made on the acaled down compressed texture instead of the source ... its usually a big, complicated mess especially if the original team didnt make a very strong archival record from the beginning (which is pretty damn hard btw)

Apart from a true remake, these "automatic" solutions are a good halfway solution, I prefer them over the soulless texture generation tools Ive seen used for that Twilight Princess Chinese remaster, those were prett bad.

Had no idea either. Well, seems like Zero is a good choice after RE2R anyway.

What are the chances this becomes an official release via update from Capcom or re-release next gen?

Great work, the Remake Remaster backgrounds were really not that nice looking when upscaled. Especially the watery-shark lab area .. it was incredibly visually noisy.

So I downloaded the textures and gave them a whirl. I meant to speedrun and see all the environments...but sometimes the best plans are ruined by dangerous zombies roaming the halls strapped with grenades.

But that's getting off topic. With some reshade/sweetfx installed alongside this texture pack, REmake has never looked better on PC.

Here's some of my screenshots.

Is there a way to remove the film grain ?

edit: Forgot how good the BSAA Chris skin looks compared to the default scrawny, bad hair, Chris.

BSAA Jill skin also looks much better than her default.

How REmake HD should have looked, good pics.

It's really fascinating to see these things taking off. Looking forward to seeing other games being tackled in the future, and I can certainly imagine automation tech being useful for professional remasters as well.

I've started it and it looks extremely good, far better than any of the other upscales with this tech I've tried (like FFIX). Once I've finished with RE7, I'll definitely give this a go since I never finished it last time.
