I think he's fucking brilliant, tbh. He toes the line well between being a constant threat but also being escapable enough to not make him a complete nightmare. If you're very quiet or still and hide he'll even walk right past you... the worst thing you can do is panic. The game also does really well at giving you warning in that you'll very often hear his footsteps and hear the music that plays when he gets close fading in before you see him (apart from when it's an engineered jump scare), as once he's in the room the music will start and you'll hear the footsteps from a mile away.

Can he kill zombies in his path like nemesis ?

That really doesn't sound like fun to me at all, this was my biggest concern, I had a few other concerns about the game but I could put them down to me not liking the changes for nostalgic reasons.

But something like this is generally a game design mechanic that I dislike, irrespective of the game being played, I understand some people enjoy the constant threat of being stalked and it certainly worked well in Alien but it was a perfect fit for that universe.

I like to enjoy resident evil games and take my time, take in the atmosphere and still have a difficult challenge, the idea of constantly being chased like it's a game of Dead By Daylight isn't appealing to me personally.

(Not knocking anybody who enjoys that btw, we all have different tastes and that's perfectly acceptable.)

I understand feeling that way as I enjoyed the classic games as well; it's funny to see how the gameplay changes made with the modern design can be positives or negatives to people. To me the lack of the fixed perspective is lamentable, but I find the new Mr. X so intriguing and awesome that it's got me excited to be running around the new R.P.D with this looming ever-present danger always there. Then we have the people let down by the exclusion of old enemy types or the changed opening cinematics. I understand completely why people might value these things more than someone else. I know Capcom has said from the start to treat this as a new game, but I know more than anyone that it's hard to do when it is called Resident Evil 2 to not draw comparisons.

I'm all about the Mr. X chasing moments. A lot of people seem to be bummed about it but it sounds like you can avoid him easily and I think that's what will differentiate it from a tense mechanic instead of a frustrating one.

I have some issues with the IGN review. It sounds like they are saying you unlock the exact same campaign for the other character once you finish with the first character. That doesn't sound right, especially with the second run thing. Also, they listed not having a certain enemy/title screen announcer as a negative. I don't know if that impacted the score, but it sounds kind of petty.

I'll be the first "pre-order cancelled" drama queen here but unfortunately it's simply because I would've barely been able to make time to play it over the next week or two anyway and not for any funnier/more absurd reasons. The Mr. X aspects outlined here pushed me into "yeah let's not stress over playing this right now" territory. I'll pick it up later.

For my tastes, stalker enemies are incredibly lame and I don't get any sense of Horror out of simply being pressured when trying to explore, it's just supremely annoying to have a game constantly interrupt me and force me to run away from what I was attempting to do. I guess the OG version's technical restrictions were a blessing because I simply saw Mr. X as an boring nuisance and kind of forgot about him from a gameplay standpoint, so it didn't dawn on me that it could be this omnipresent in REmake 2.

Only thing I'm not crazy about is how dark the game is. I was hoping eventually you'd be able to restore power to the police station but based on a couple of the reviews, it seems like the entire game is super dark.
I wouldn't say the entire game is dark, there's plenty in the PD and later in the game that is fully lit. The flashlight is needed for maybe a third of the game?

The footsteps thing is a great tension-adder, too, since I got fooled more than once where I thought it was zombies, opened a door and wham, there he was - nearly shit myself. The inverse has been true, too, where I've been scared to open a door as I've thought it was him, then discovered it was just zombies.

The thing that makes it work is the design of the RPD. Rarely will you ever be backed into a corner and forced to go past him - usually you can turn tail and kite around to get to where you need to go in another way, losing him in the process. Later areas don't always play by these rules, but you're better equipped by then. I also really like the structure: he doesn't show up at RPD until you've explored the lion's share of the building, so you have plenty of time to become familiar with it all. When he shows up, it tests your knowledge of the building, mastery of the map and the routes around it - and also forces you to approach it in a different way, as suddenly you want to not fire guns unless absolutely necessary because it'll attract attention.

I totally agree. Adds an X factor.

I mean he was relentless in the original too. Except that you beat him with the limitations of the hardware since going in between rooms meant a loading screen. Not anymore now so I say Mr.X fulfills his purpose completely in the remake.

This is what I feel. Mr. X is the one enemy I feel benefits the most from the new game's set up and design and I have a feeling I'll remember this game as the Mr. X show (Featuring minor side character William Birkin) /s. He's stood out in so much Resident Evil media over the years, but even I have to admit his encounters in the original game seem lackluster compared to the notion of a Mr. X that can dynamically track you through the R.P.D.

Yeah, I don't mind the stalker stuff. I quite like that aspect. Hell, I'd love a RE3 remake just to see how they implement Nemesis. Dude is still the baddest motherfucker to ever come in this series.

I'm more disappointed to read there are no spiders or crows. Now that's a dick move. I was looking forward to that.

This review puzzles me a bit. The main complaint is that the game isn't cohesive in its approach as and doesn't do full justice to the original, but the reviewer seems to have issues articulating exactly why.

I think it's because this review, like some of the others, is dancing around the perfectly understandable opinion that the original game is pretty incohesive in its approach as well. It added additional action elements and a lot of ammunition to the original game and transplanted it from a fitting mansion to a weird police station, among other changes. It only seems fully "traditional" compared to the increasingly action-oriented approach the series continued to take.
Have any reviews commented on if and how the game works on a dramatic level? Would be nice to play a Resi with an actual good story for once.
Don't get your hopes up. It's still Resident Evil, for better and worse. And Kotaku compares the revamped acting and presentation to "a college student's reimagining of Resident Evil 2".

The story is obviously the same as the original game. They've slightly expanded the side characters plots (Annette, Sherry, Kendo) and I personally feel lke these are much better renditions of their stories. Just the dynamics between the character are well improved.

Obviously this is not absolutely next level "OSCAR WORTHY" performances but it's a great improvement and potentially some of the best little character moments in the series. Even the Ada x Leon dynamic is perfect here.

If I wanted to play Isolation or Outlast, I'd go play those games. But I don't cause I find that type of game mechanic trash.
How is it "trash"? And why you comparing Outlast and Alien to this? Needing to constantly flee, run away, defenseless isn't the same as being hunted but able to evade the hunter and defend yourself

Nope.

The lenght is actually the same, what really changes is that in a second playthrough you simply know which places to go, the solution to puzzles and the best way to deal with specific encounters. That happens all the time with RE games, 7 had a trophy to beat it under 4h.

But being completely fair tho, the in-game clock is a bit broken; it appears that it only counts successful attempts, like, if you die 12 time in a boss fight but manages to win in the 13th run, it will only get the amount of time from when you actually beat it.
