New changes to the Contest and Rules starting this month, March 2021!

Greetings! I'm sure you read the title and are currently asking yourself multiple questions, some of which may include;

What is the ResetEra thread of the month contest?
How do I participate?
Can penguins actually ice skate?
How can a mod have such great taste in Pokemon?

All your questions and more will be answered below!

ResetEra Thread Of The Month Contest FAQ

What is the ResetEra Thread of the Month Contest?

The ResetEra Thread of the Month Contest is a new recurring monthly event meant to encourage member quality thread making and bring a fun site wide event to look forward to each month.

How does the contest work?

Starting on the first day of each month and ending on the last day of each month, members are encouraged to post a link to any thread on ResetEra that they find to be particularly amusing, informative, high quality, fun, etc. into this thread to nominate them for the contest. These threads should be positive and enjoyable; no ironic nominations please! At the end of the month staff including myself will look over all of the thread nominations and narrow them down to a list of finalists to be voted on by all of you!

What are some criteria that decide if a thread is worthy of becoming a finalist?

Threads that are thought provoking, well written, creative, fun, attract a lot of user engagement and so on are likely finalist candidates. Try to nominate threads that you think have one or more of the above qualities.

How do I nominate a thread?

Simply post the link of the thread you wish to nominate into this thread, along with a short explanation about why you feel the thread deserves to be thread of the month. Please remember to provide an explanation about why you feel it should win. While some conversation is allowed, please try not to drown out the actual nomination posts.

Is there a limit to how many threads I can nominate?

Yes.

Due to the sheer amount of threads created each month there is a limit of ONE (1) thread per category that can be nominated per user for a maximum of TWO (2) nominations total (See below in the FAQ for the list of thread categories). Any subsequent nominations for a given category will be ineligible and only the first nomination will be counted. If you nominate a thread and later decide you wish to nominate a different thread instead, you may freely change your nominated thread at any point during the month by editing your original post.

Can I nominate a thread that was made by myself?

No.

This is to avoid a situation where everyone just uses their one thread nomination on their own threads. Please keep an eye out for great threads made by others.

How long does the nomination period last?

The nomination period starts on the first day of the month and ends on the last day of the month.

Which threads are eligible to be nominated?

Any thread on Era created between the first and the last day of the month of are eligible. If a thread was created outside of the specific contest month period it will be ineligible. For example, only threads created between January 1st and January 31st will be eligible to be entered in the January thread of the month contest.

How will threads be voted on?
(Voting Rules updated March 2021)

After the nomination period I, along with other staff members will look at all of the nominated threads, and based on the criteria listed above, decide which of the nominated threads become finalists. To simplify things voting will now take place via a simple poll that will appear at the top of the proceeding months nomination thread. For example the finalists from the March thread of the month contest nomination thread will be announced and up for vote via a poll in the April thread of the month contest nomination thread. The voting poll will be open for the first 3 weeks of each months nomination period, on the last week of the following month the results and winners will be announced. The process will repeat each month.

What are the thread categories that can be nominated and voted on?
(Changes made March 2021)

These will be categories that users will be able to nominate and vote on;

Gaming Thread of the Month
EtcetEra Thread of the Month

(Given the lack of OT threads nominated we it was decided to cut the separate OT category and simply combine Ecetera OT's into the Ecetera category and the Gaming OT's into the gaming category.)

The finalists will be split into those 2 categories and users will be able to cast one (1) vote for each category. The thread that gets the highest amount of votes for each category will become the winner! A total of three (3) winners, the OP of the winning thread in each category, each month will get a prize!

What do I get if my thread wins thread of the month?

Great question!

Have you ever seen a member with a special tag under their username and wished you had a tag of your own? Tired of only seeing "Member" text under your username? Well you're in luck as the three winners each month will get their very own Era tag! So fancy!

If you don't know what a tag is, it's text that appears directly under your username that is separate from the standard "Member" text every user has (see below).

mod.png

Tags are usually handled out on the rare occasion, usually during special events, due to a user making a noteworthy post or any other number of reasons. And if that's not enough, you will also receive 1 month of Era Clear ad-free browsing!

Can I win thread of the month multiple times?

Unfortunately if your thread happens to win in any given contest month, you and your threads will not be eligible to win again in the same year. This is partly to give more members the chance to win and also because a user can only have a single tag at a time. Past winners are still encouraged to create quality threads and nominate threads from other users!

Misc.

If there are any other questions you may have that haven't been answered in the above FAQ please feel free to ask!

Good luck to all who enter!

89 Characters & Not a Single Black Character: The Anti-Blackness of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

AUTHOR'S NOTE: This thread was initially written not long after the release of Pyra/Mythra, with the 5th character of Fighters Pass Vol. 2 not yet revealed & us being under the impression that Fighters Pass Vol. 2 would be the end of the road for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It was later updated...

I'm not sure if there are rules for nominating threads made by finalists for last month, but this thread definitely deserves to be on the nominations list for this month. The discussion I had there was honestly kinda impactful for me on a personal level, and the OP was very well made. Pardon me if I'm breaking any rules by nominating a thread made by a current finalist, but this is something that deserves to be there in my opinion.

I am going to second this. It was an eye opening thread for multiple reasons.

Edit:

Given Neoxon will justifiably win last month's TotM, my new nominee is:

www.resetera.com

Our gaming hardware is linked to slave labour, concentration camps and genocide. Here's what to do about it.

[Update Q4 2022] Since this thread and petition was started, there have been three significant updates to this situation: 1. Nintendo responded and directly commented on this situation at a shareholder meeting: Source (Q9). Furukawa's comments here deny the findings of the ASPI report...

It deals with Slave labour, concerns the apathy surrounding it on Era, provides ways to address it to whatever extent we can. Given gaming is one of the core pillars of this forum, it behooves all its members to read the thread's OP and do what can be done and put our money where our mouths are as a one of the more progressive online havens.

No rule at all against nominating a thread that was a finalist for the previous month. Keep in mind though should Neoxon's thread from February win the current poll, they'll be ineligible to be voted on next month when March thread finalists are able to be voted on.

Multiple people are more than welcome to nominated the same thread, however doing so wont increase the chances at that thread winning so it's up to you if you'd like to change your nomination or keep it the same.

Ah, gotcha. Thank you.

I have not seen another thread as pertinent as Neoxon's thread about SSMBU sans perhaps, Angie's thread about GameGrumps, albeit it being more akin to a news (I do not know whether that would have any bearing). That said, given the rules, I may change my nomination should his contribution for this month becomes ineligible per the rules.

The type of thread definitely doesn't have a bearing on if it's eligible to be voted on. But yeah, the poll voting ends 2 days before the nomination period ends so there will be time to switch nominations should it be necessary!

I'll never stop anyone from nominating the same threads as others though especially when the thread is important or impactful. Just wanted it known that multiple users nominating the same thread wont increase chances for the thread to become a finalist or win.

Aha, I missed out reading how nominations become the finalists that are then put on polls. You folks are Electoral College of Era :P :P :P

48 hours should hopefully be sufficient to come up with a different nomination should Neoxon win Feb '21.

Appreciate you taking on the mantle of responsibility for this monthly thread nominations.

Cheers.

I always love a indie recommendation/exposition thread, and this one has a lot of effort put on:

www.resetera.com

An Overview of indie and low profile games in 2021 (200+ games with images)

Considering the amount of delays that have happened with AAA games recently, I thought this might be a good time to bring attention to the indie games that are releasing this year. The more significant titles have gotten a more substantial presentation below. But there are many more games to...

Didn't expect that comparison but it's amusing haha

Normally the thread would have gone up the first week of March and voting would run most of the month but unfortunately I was extremely busy much of the month and only got to make both threads (be sure to check out the ecetera version of this thread/contest too!) over the weekend and finally post them tonight so there'll be less time this month then will usually be the case.

I thought of the idea for this monthly event in December so I'm glad it's been able to be realized and in it's 3rd month.

Given you have laid the foundation for this monthly Era operation, I do hope members from the mod/admin community can provide aid or step in in your stead should you be preoccupied. This monthly tradition ought to continue without you stretching yourself too thin over it amidst your other responsibilities.

And I shall check out OT as well.

Take care of yourself. Cheers.

Can this thread be stickied temporarily? Feels like it would then not slip off of our collective radars easily then.

I had stickied every thread during the previous months but unfortunately it didn't really help the threads get more replies or attention. Tried a different approach for this months threads but for April and beyond I'll likely sticky them once again.

FFVII: Remake is (Peter Jackson's) The Hobbit of video games

I don't even know where to begin with this thread other than to say I'm frustrated and I know I'm probably in the minority on this one. Started FFVII: Remake a few days ago hoping for the best. It's been on my list for a long time and despite remembering not liking the combat system all that...
