I did not see that coming but at least the reactions in here are exactly what I expected from this forum haha

Why do you pretend that anyone knew the previous owner? How many times has Cerium posted on ERA? What was his engagement with the community? If the site got along find with having an invisible owner for 4 years, why would it suddenly need new owners to show up and say hi?

It's like this announcement is suddenly making people realise how little they actually thought about the true nature of a large internet forum like this.

You are right, of course. Maybe my point of view is too much skewed towards how this would be done on the game development side of things. My initial thoughts were about the growing discontent in this thread. I think it can spiral out quickly. This will surely put a spot light on the new owners and will not allow them to pretend like they are completely invisible. At least that's what I think.

Cerium invested into the site and assumed all the financial risk that came with starting and maintaining this forum and thus he's the one who gets the return of that investment. That's how these things work.

What exactly did you all think this forum was made for?

Ya quite a bit of naivete. Though I'm kinda surprised at the sell, I thought they'd quietly ride the cash cow into the ground.

If there is another mass exodus I'd be screwed as discord is somewhat confusing to navigate and I wouldn't be able to find anyone 🥺

I use Discord through a browser, and every channel I've ever joined has stayed open unless I go out of my way to close it. So once you get to the channels you want, you really shouldn't have to worry about the confusing interface ever again. Just chat away.

Holy crap, no wonder Xbox threads got more quiet over the years. I always wondered where everyone went.

yes I'm gonna need an official list of all these now. Because I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go into lurk mode without being logged in anymore.

Very good example of how capitalism functions by labor exploitation btw - much of the staff who spend "countless hours" keeping the site in order get $0 despite quite literally being staff, the userbase which creates the content that provides value naturally gets nothing in terms of either money or power, but all the posting-labor creates value that the owner gets to benefit from, not only by ad revenue but by cashing out.
When you're getting shafted out of a share of 4.5 million dollars for the great benefit of "being an integral part of the community", it sure is.
Not going to pretend the mods and I saw eye to eye on much, but I do agree wholeheartedly that they deserved some of this ludicrous jackpot. Hell, some is way too conservative. Cerium sat on his duff and collected how much of it? Everything?

Says the user who colluded with the mods and staff in order to drive regulars off the site to be an integral part of the community.
Sphag, you and others wanted to get rid of us for a long time but after Super Tuesday, y'all went into overdrive and got rid of us one by one. I know where the bodies are hidden.
Remember when you and others plotted with Brazil to take over the website and install new mods in place? Nice fucking cosplay socialism you got there!
Sir, this is Resetfire. We post walkthroughs about how to annoy low-level tech company phone staff and sign petitions on Change.org.

Crazy....I was just thinking about the site these past few days and wondering how long it can realistically last given the unforced errors that happen every 4 or 5 months causing people to bounce on mass.

Being bought out and running away with the cash was not on the list thats for sure.

I guess it could be worse, it could be a chinese company. A swedish company at least has to follow EU law, right? RIGHT?

The financial risk of unpaid labour

Of course cerium is a grifter, I've been saying this since the site was founded lmao

Now this site is publicly aligned with a specific entity in the gaming space, does that make it difficult/problematic for industry types to openly interact here socially as they currently do, 'cause they enjoy it? Maybe it does. Does it mean other industry types will actually now come here as part of their job description, to promote their brands and services? That seems inevitable giving the wording of their statement - sounds fun, lol.

So you made $700k a year (I'm not even gonna mention the 4.5 mil) and you didn't give a single cent to the moderation team? Yeah, that's fucking disgusting.

Pay👏the👏mods👏.
Ehhh, that's just going all in on the corporate bullshit. A site like this should ideally be run not for profit, by the users for the users, sorta like seemingly a lot of people in here naively assumed it already was. Adding money into the mix is guaranteed to over-complicate and fuck everything up. I bet a good number of mods wouldn't even want the extra pressure, demands, tax hassles, whatever, being paid some bullshit amount would invite. You often get a pass when you do what you do 'cause you enjoy it and 'cause not other fucker wants to, but when you make that role a paid job there's a whole lot of expectation that comes with it form the user side, and rightly so.

Now, sharing some of that $4.5m windfall with the people who gave up huge portions of their life to make this place what it is? Donating to the causes Era has stood to align with? That's a different thing entirely, but lol that'd be surprising.

Since it's come up a lot, I just wanted to mention that we did discuss this with MOBA Network and they were emphatic that they are not in the user data business and never will be. They're not going to sell your data. Nothing is going to change about how your data is handled and protected.
I kinda remeber having to agree to new terms/conditions maybe even a number of times over recently years (forgive me if I misremember, it might just have been some cookie permissions thing or something). But if that was the case, were those terms updated to facilitate the sale? If there were new terms/conditions I obvs didn't read them and just clicked to agree 'cause I'm as lazy/ignorant as the next person.

Surprised by the response here - I thought you guys loved acquisitions
I can Knackdance to this.

I think some people are over reacting.

At least wait till the new owners fuck up the first time before nuking your accounts or going on account suicides or making new lifeboat forums.

Yeah I figured that's what would have happened had Cerium not gotten such a lucrative offer. The site seemed to be plenty profitable as-is, but 4.5 mil vs $700k a year for who knows how much longer is an easy decision.

I'm curious as to what MOBA specifically hopes to accomplish here, as I can't imagine the site itself will provide a worthwhile ROI in the short- or medium-term without some further attempts at monetization.

I'm surprised with all that has happened over the last year-ish or so that there are people who still think this site is progressive lol. Most progressive communities have been pushed out and Ect has aggressively anti-left posters that have shifted the conversations and opinions here close to moderate at best and punch left basically at every reasonable opportunity

Not sure how I feel about the sale, but I mostly come here for game news and chat due to the above, so I doubt a lot will change

I for one hope the new owners come in and fire all the mods and install their own mods. That way they can either pay them or not but we wont have to deal with all this drama that causes mass exodus of whole communities.

Lmao at that payout. I know running this site cost money, but the sheer gall of asking people to pay for no ads while not paying staff when you can walk away with that much...

Guess I'm glad I made a throwaway e-mail to join with on day 1 when there was no way to tell if this site was going to be secure or not.

I'd rather not have some corporate dude come in here to "how do you do fellow kids" us

Better get used to that anyway; if they're supposedly not selling our data but still trying to make money off of the audience they can give companies, gonna bet you see more companies posting here directly.

I wonder if mods knew about how much revenue this site generates. That a forum that makes 700k in revenue per year wouldn't be able to pay its moderation staff seems rather unlikely, considering this sort of enterprise doesn't really have that many running costs. I'm not talking about full time pay, and I assume most mods neither would nor want to consider Era their full time thing, but not paying anything at all seems hard to justify looking at these numbers.

I have no real opinion on this considering this isn't even the main place I visit for videogame discussion, but I can probably predict how things'll start bubbling to the surface in a couple years or so

If there's a whole slew of anti-left posters dominating these forums I'm not seeing them. Many of the trending threads I see here are talking about racism, sexism, how women and minorities aren't respresented in games, TERF/homophobic celebrities, the list goes on.

As someone who has been involved in this community for a long ass time with varying levels of involvement going from being a part of the setting up of neogaf to advising on the creation of this site. It ALWAYS stings to see singular people get rich off the back of the community.

But the least you can do is pay the mods.

This site wouldn't be this site without them.
