SolidSnakeBoy said:A fun exploration of self-worth in anime. It has such a quirky cast and the willingness to explore professional sportsmanship from a personal and familiar viewpoint is very charming and earnest. Lost of funny gags. It is also fun to see a show set in the early 2000s and how live used to be then. Just a show that is better than each of its parts.

curler said:The manga art is some of the nicest I've seen, and although the anime wasn't able to detail it out, it brought a nice, colourful pallet to the animation style, and one that I also welcome. A nice, slower-paced fantasy that was a treat to watch each week.

Pellaidh said:If there's one thing watching this movie made me realize, it's that we now truly live in a post Your Name anime world. Mostly because this is basically the exact same thing: a fantasy romance/drame about two teenagers mixed in with with some vague supernatural stuff, and an obligatory insert-song sequence. But despite the similarities, I actually liked this quite a bit. The protagonist is charming, the romance feels more earned, the visuals are beautiful, and there's even some heartfelt if clumsy social commentary. Plus, it was released on Netflix, meaning you can actually watch it in the same year it released in Japan.

Tower of God:
Dassobrother said:It sometimes felt like I was reading a John le Carre novel. What are characters motivations? Why is anyone helping anyone in this contest? What is this contest even testing? What the heck is this Tower? In typical mystery box fashion that may turn off some, some answers arrive by the end of the first season, but you're left with many more new questions. The animation feels utterly unique as well, and it's all supported by an oustanding soundtrack that can feel suffocating, overwhelming, and somehow beautiful. I don't want to spoil any of the show but I did think this show had the best villain of the year, with Dorohedoro being a close second.
13) My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom!

Where to Watch It: Crunchyroll and VRV
Pellaidh said:Isekai shows are basically the most popular genre of anime these days, but so far, they have been almost exclusively oriented around male protagonists. But My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! represents the first TV adaptation of a subgenre of isekai that has become incredibly popular in manga in recent years but has so far been absent in anime: that of a female protagonist being reincarnated as a villainess in an otome visual novel. It's an amusing enough concept the first time you see it, and the show manages to be a pretty decent adaptation of its source material.

The Voice Acting being recorded prior to animation being based on said performances with the actors together theatre style gives it a more cohesive presentation, making the weird animal people feel more human than most other anime.

djinn said:Season 1 only gave us glimpses of its true nature behind the shoujo haze, but season 2 is when Furuba really shows its teeth. I'm not even sorry when I say it gave me immense pleasure to see newcomers squirming as each episode showed just how bad the Sohmas' lives were and just how dangerous Akito could be. But it wasn't all misery porn, as characters made breakthroughs, romance blossomed and others overcame years of trauma to reach a better place. I'm overjoyed my favourite shoujo is being made with love and care, with an attention to detail that breathes life into this world. I eagerly look forward to the final season and for Furuba to shock newcomers one last time..

SolidSnakeBoy said:Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the best executed twist in anime this year. The way this show explores how we fit as part of a system and when we must rise and overthrow it, is extremely resonant. The show deals with the cost of such an act, death, with poignant clarity. It is a fantastic show to watch if you want to be inspired to do more in the face of immense injustice. Some good animation and monster killing helps along the way. The main shortcoming of this show is the limited run-time which means one of the main characters, has to be put in the backburner for parts of it.

Pitou said:Oh Taichi my beautiful boy… another amazing season of Chihayafuru. Felt like they really stepped up on the production front for this season, a lot of beautiful shots and the OST as always was great. Really enjoyed the drama between our three main protags but was also really nice to see one of my favorite side characters Harada-Sensei get a ton of love. (RIP Unshou Ishizuka). I laughed, I cried and was on the edge of my seat during those karuta matches. This really is the GOAT.
djinn said:The Queen of Sports anime reclaims her title. I was so happy to return to the Karuta club and watch their successes and failures. I love every single character in this series. I love that their lives are made up of more than just a card game. I love the friendships, the rivalries, the romance and everything in between. I hope we can get another season. And another. And another.

DassoBrother said:This world is dirty and gross, its magic is gross and nasty, its characters are nasty fun. I don't even know what to articulate about this show but it pulls of 3D animation better than anything else I've watched (I think I appreciate it more here than Beastars). I'm surprised myself as I was turned off by the manga quickly but just as quickly bought into the show. Caiman is a "great" hero and I could see any character in this show being somebody's favourite.

Metroidvania said:It's kinda random, but the ragtag cast of assorted ne'er do wells (and some psychos among them) really does remind me in a way of a bit of bebop mixed together with a heist/ocean's 11 type scenario, with the cyberpunk dystopia setting a better world than the game of the same name.
daveo42 said:What it lacks in character depth, this fills with style and world-building. Fun, violent romp filled to the brim with pop culture references, a neat storyline, and some of the best cinematography and direction of nearly every other show of the year.

It reminded me why I love anime so much in the first place, and the endless possibilities that exist within the medium. The imagined sequences in particular were really something special. Every episode put a big dumb smile on my face and had me thinking "Okay the next episode can't possibly be better than this" and then it always was! Also that OP!

daveo42 said:Shounen anime/manga tends to be rather similar across the board, even with wildly different initial concepts or characters, with few exceptions. This is one of them. Not only has MAPPA done an insane job week-to-week with this from an animation and direction standpoint, but the source material is both top-notch and rivals some of the greatest Jump series ever created.
AndrewJ said:On paper a pretty standard battle shounen with your good-natured hero, supernatural powers, preestablished power structures, squad of tertiary characters with unique powers, etc. But boy, is it all executed well. What it lacks in originality it makes up in "good animewatch", as someone once put it many years ago. Fight scenes as dynamically directed and well-animated as there's ever been in action show, visually and personally appearing characters, and villains who are both utterly despicable and capable of being made fun of in the post-credits gag sequences.

crimsonECHIDNA said:Comedy sequels are always hard to follow up on, but Kaguya-Sama Season 2 somehow managed to achieve the task of being both funnier than the first season while giving the characters much-needed depth. Despite the heavy humor, there is a surprising amount of depth and sincerity the characters are treated with.
Aiii said:The great cast, combined with the great Japanese VA's just makes this an absolute joy to watch. Gags almost always hits, while also pulling on the heart strings when nescessary. Just a tremendous show.
