A fun exploration of self-worth in anime. It has such a quirky cast and the willingness to explore professional sportsmanship from a personal and familiar viewpoint is very charming and earnest. Lost of funny gags. It is also fun to see a show set in the early 2000s and how live used to be then. Just a show that is better than each of its parts.

The manga art is some of the nicest I've seen, and although the anime wasn't able to detail it out, it brought a nice, colourful pallet to the animation style, and one that I also welcome. A nice, slower-paced fantasy that was a treat to watch each week.

If there's one thing watching this movie made me realize, it's that we now truly live in a post Your Name anime world. Mostly because this is basically the exact same thing: a fantasy romance/drame about two teenagers mixed in with with some vague supernatural stuff, and an obligatory insert-song sequence. But despite the similarities, I actually liked this quite a bit. The protagonist is charming, the romance feels more earned, the visuals are beautiful, and there's even some heartfelt if clumsy social commentary. Plus, it was released on Netflix, meaning you can actually watch it in the same year it released in Japan.

The usual cartoon hijinks and crazy action we've come to expect from Trigger, anchored by the surprisingly grounded relationship between Michiru and Nazuna. Also the greatest one-off baseball episode I've ever seen.

It sometimes felt like I was reading a John le Carre novel. What are characters motivations? Why is anyone helping anyone in this contest? What is this contest even testing? What the heck is this Tower? In typical mystery box fashion that may turn off some, some answers arrive by the end of the first season, but you're left with many more new questions. The animation feels utterly unique as well, and it's all supported by an oustanding soundtrack that can feel suffocating, overwhelming, and somehow beautiful. I don't want to spoil any of the show but I did think this show had the best villain of the year, with Dorohedoro being a close second.

Isekai shows are basically the most popular genre of anime these days, but so far, they have been almost exclusively oriented around male protagonists. But My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! represents the first TV adaptation of a subgenre of isekai that has become incredibly popular in manga in recent years but has so far been absent in anime: that of a female protagonist being reincarnated as a villainess in an otome visual novel. It's an amusing enough concept the first time you see it, and the show manages to be a pretty decent adaptation of its source material.

Season 1 only gave us glimpses of its true nature behind the shoujo haze, but season 2 is when Furuba really shows its teeth. I'm not even sorry when I say it gave me immense pleasure to see newcomers squirming as each episode showed just how bad the Sohmas' lives were and just how dangerous Akito could be. But it wasn't all misery porn, as characters made breakthroughs, romance blossomed and others overcame years of trauma to reach a better place. I'm overjoyed my favourite shoujo is being made with love and care, with an attention to detail that breathes life into this world. I eagerly look forward to the final season and for Furuba to shock newcomers one last time..

Without a shadow of a doubt, this is the best executed twist in anime this year. The way this show explores how we fit as part of a system and when we must rise and overthrow it, is extremely resonant. The show deals with the cost of such an act, death, with poignant clarity. It is a fantastic show to watch if you want to be inspired to do more in the face of immense injustice. Some good animation and monster killing helps along the way. The main shortcoming of this show is the limited run-time which means one of the main characters, has to be put in the backburner for parts of it.

Shounen anime/manga tends to be rather similar across the board, even with wildly different initial concepts or characters, with few exceptions. This is one of them. Not only has MAPPA done an insane job week-to-week with this from an animation and direction standpoint, but the source material is both top-notch and rivals some of the greatest Jump series ever created.

On paper a pretty standard battle shounen with your good-natured hero, supernatural powers, preestablished power structures, squad of tertiary characters with unique powers, etc. But boy, is it all executed well. What it lacks in originality it makes up in "good animewatch", as someone once put it many years ago. Fight scenes as dynamically directed and well-animated as there's ever been in action show, visually and personally appearing characters, and villains who are both utterly despicable and capable of being made fun of in the post-credits gag sequences.

Comedy sequels are always hard to follow up on, but Kaguya-Sama Season 2 somehow managed to achieve the task of being both funnier than the first season while giving the characters much-needed depth. Lol people keep acting like they bored of battle shounen (or at least that's how it feels), but they continue to rank high. Not that I'm complaining, JJK is a top tier adaptation, so its popularity is unsurprising

Wasn't really paying attention to the votes, but I'm surprised Kaguya had strong enough mindshare to win once again, felt like it came out forever ago due to how rough 2020 was. It absolutely deserves it though.

Thought Great Pretender would be higher. And I guess I gotta check out Akudama Drive and Dorohedoro now. Never even heard of the former before this week tbh...

I will see you next year....please MAPPA, Yuri on Ice S2 NOW!

And Kaguya S3 is covering even better content, so that should be fun lol

First half of Jujutsu Kaisen was really good and it looked and sounded great, consistently (well there were inconsistent animation errors but you had to look for them).

Mad Tower of God isnt higher, and most of my list isnt present.

Dreadful.

Fruits Basket s1 had stronger moments for Kyo, this 2nd half highlights were too dependent on if your fav character was there or not.

I'm still standing by ranking Jujutsu Kaisen higher next year, though this was probably the year for it to win. Just feels weird since it's not finished and some of it's best episodes so far have happened in 2021.

Thanks for putting it all together, SolidSnakeBoy!

My guess is a combination of:
-Lower Era traffic
-Lower Anime output due to Covid

But yes the drop is....substantial.

I would say more the latter than the former. There wasn't enough hype anime to actually watch....nothing like this current year/season....so many sequels and to top it off....Shingeki no Kyojin's Final Season....just plot twist after plot twist and every week seems more hype than the last!

Akudama Drive is a lot of fun as long as you don't need a great story but can get by with fun characters, violent action and a cyberpunkish setting :P

I didn't manage to finish a single anime series. Wtf happened?

Started Somali, Haikyuu!. Deca-Dence, Akudama, Made In Abyss, Dorohedoro, crazy gambling girl, Jujutsu, last season of My Hero... so many.

Maybe this.

I was surprised to even see MiA on this ranking as I thought it was banned entirely, or was that just discussion around it?

You'd think I would watch more anime while being stuck at home for an entire year but I only saw Beastars, AOT S1-4 and Death Note (for like the 5th time).
Oh well more anime to add to my ever lasting backlog on MAL 😒

Chihayafuru should be higher, Eizouken lower

I do feel like Eizouken is really over-rated but it's a miracle for any series with an all-women cast to be recognized so it's better than nothing.

It wasn't my #1 but I actually think the weirdest snub is Adachi and Shimamura. I don't know why people didn't watch that. I also thought Elaina was a bit more popular.

I didn't get around to finishing Elaina because funimation was so slow with their dub of it. I wasn't minding it though.
I'm also still slowly working on kuma kuma bear or whatever it's called lol.

Ideally as things start to return to more normal funimation can get back to closer dubs as before covid they were often only 3-4 weeks behind on the dub.

and like I should've watched chihiyafuru, but I'm half heartedly waiting for the dub. it's been long enough that to watch it I will need to rewatch the first two seasons with my SO, and we will watch them dubbed (I already rewatched it dubbed last year lol) but since season 3 never started getting dubbed that I saw, we never got motivated to rewatch seasons 1 and 2.

Who checks stickies >.>?

Hahaha oh don't worry. It's gonna be lit next time. It's gonna be fun. Trust me.

I am curious if Kaguya season 3 makes it into this year or if the OVA in May will be all we manage to get this year and it won't be until next year we get season 3. (I'd guess it will come this fall though)

Either way, it's going to be the big boss of the year it comes out. Granted this year does have some good competition. I'd say there are already a few shows that would be in my top 5 of 2020 if they aired in 2020 instead of 2021 lol.

Fruits basket final, attack on titan, re:zero, Horimiya, My Hero season 5, To Your Eternity, Wonder Egg (if it somehow sticks the landing), Tokyo Revengers, Blue Period, Chainsaw Man would all have a chance to compete with it that I know of are coming out this year, plus a new Jojo part or Spy x Family might make it this year, and some other shows I don't know about or missed.

But I will also continue to say, if Kaguya season 3 gets the same love and care seasons 1 and 2 got... it will make those seem meh in comparison. The content for season 3 is the best content Kaguya has offered so far.
I haven't got into Kaguya yet... lol you think I should watch it or read it?
Both?

Maybe read it first as the start is a little rough and get through that faster is better, but then the anime is great as well. it had the creator involved to help smooth some things out. They outright rearranged some things and skipped some things that the creator didn't feel would work well animated and what not.

The anime in general is just well done and some bits in it aren't in the manga or were changed a little to work better in the anime.

I expect next year it will be unanimous for Eva 3.0+1.0 for the films (or more realistically 2022)
amusingly this might get competition from yuri on ice since the next project is supposed to be a movie :P

https://myanimelist.net/anime/43755/Misaki_no_Mayoiga has potential I suppose.

Not if I have anything to do with it.

What am I supposed to vote for instead.... fruits basket :P?

I put kaguya at 5th in 2020 and fruits basket 6th.... knowing what is coming in both... it will likely end up similar to each other again in 2021 :P
