As a product of the 80s and 90s, I remember coming across DOZENS of children's cartoons and walking by dozens of toys in the toy aisle based on properties that my parents had to awkwardly tell me I wasn't old enough to enjoy. In retrospect... dang, it was a lot.

I remember this goofy show:
toxic_crusaders.jpg

Based on the bad-taste, shock-value, sex, gore and drug-fueled R-rated Toxic Avenger movies.
tumblr_msxbbiKib01qc5cfho4_r1_250.gifv

Or, you know, that cool superhero Robocop cartoon.
RoboCop_animated_title_screen.jpg

Oh, there's a movie? How cool is that?
BlankGlaringJackrabbit-max-1mb.gif

(someone want to call a paramedic?)

Oh, this looks like a fun fantasy adventure!

Based on the popularity of a classic book and film series, you say?

Well, what about this guy, Rambo? He looks fun.

Who could argue with a cartoon show based on a series of R-rated movies based on a book about a guy who goes on a killing spree due to PTSD?

Now excuse me while I go shopping for my Terminator and Aliens toys which were right alongside the Power Rangers and Transformers.

This was the same era that had parental groups saying Lord Zedd was too scary for Power Rangers, Spider-man wasn't allowed to throw a punch on Fox Kids, and the Ninja Turtles kept having limitations put on their weapon use.

What shows did you watch? What toylines did you collect? And are there any cartoon adaptations from adult content that I failed to mention?

Personally, I loved them. Still do.

Us '80s kids were outside all day doing crazy stuff unsupervised. A few toys based on movies we watched anyway weren't a big deal.

I remember there being a lot of Batman '89 merchandise at the toy store and that movie was rated 15 and up here.

As I was scrolling through on my phone and saw Aliens, I was hoping to learn that they made an Aliens cartoon that I somehow missed.

They had to have pitched that at some time, no?
Maybe the heroes could have had a friendly face hugger as sidekick.

T2 and Alien figures were out and gone before Power Rangers hit US toy shelves by several years. This was kind of transition period in the early 90s as they started to phase out "action" figures and violent gun toys. Era when GI Joe was going crazy with sci fi designs and concept.

There was a proof of concept for an Alien War series that tied into these toys but it never got off the ground so the toys were one offs. Popularity of the AVP comics at that time that DH had started also eventually had them do Predator toys and also create AVP cross over toys for the line

I saw T2 when I was 6 years old and had almost the entire toy line, lol.

Don't we have Legos and whatnot for Call of Duty right now? Same concept I think (although a bit more "military-industrial complex" than Toxic Avenger lol)

A lot of toy stores kept stock around for years. The Alien Kenner toys were out in 1992 and continued until 1995. Power Ranger toys were out by 1993. Those Kenner toys were on pegs for several years after that, I recall. Lots of overlap. Terminator got new waves even as late as 1997.

Back then the economy was smaller, production costs higher without free trade, and there were far fewer t.v. channels and other creative outlets for commercial niches. Opportunities for good licenses were fewer. They had to make children's toys with what was available in the broader pop culture.

I watched all of those except Toxic as a kid (younger than 12) and I wasn't the only one. I think people cared less about what their kids watched. I mean I had a big Aliens phase when I was like, 9.

i wrote out a post but it just came around to what you're essentially saying

funny back in the day little johnny was dying to sneak into an R rated movie with bated breath now little johnny could give fuck all about terminator, rambo, alien ect (or whatever the modern analogues of those are)

I was watching all of those movies too. Including the horror movies not mentioned like Nightmare of Elm street and Friday the 13th. I cringe at the thought of my own kids watching these things haha.

Swamp Thing toys were the shit I remember collecting and jealous of the ones my cousin would get.

I was really shocked when I learned about the Toxic Avenger movies.
Oh man lol. Those movies were definitely not kid friendly at all. Not just the gory violence but it was basically soft core pornography. Troma Films were something else.

the 80s were wild lol.

T2 toy line ended in 92, they brought it back in 97 as a tie in product for the Universal Studios new attraction of the same name, 3-D Battle through Time, and was short lived and kinda valuable cause of it.

I get that, but you'd think there'd be like, I don't know, a Jurassic Park cartoon. Or the continued adventures of The Goonies kids show. Or a cartoon about E.T. and his wacky adventures. There were a ton of really popular, well-liked family adventures (or family-adjacent) that I'm curious what the reasons were for never having tie-ins or adaptations (compared to all these gory, violent adult properties). I mean, I guess we had cartoons of a ton of other movies (Bill & Ted, Back to the Future, Beetlejuice, friggin' Free Willy and Problem Child, etc).

And then there was Police Academy.

It's not really as discordant as the OP makes it seem. The Films were films... so the onus was on parents to allow kids to see the films or not. Power Rangers, TMNT, and Spider Man were television shows that kids had access to without parental supervision... so censors being cautious about it makes sense.

The Toy lines for those films existed pretty much because a lot of parents were perfectly fine with their kids seeing R rated films and for those that didn't, those cartoons filled the gaps. As a kid I saw Robocop, T2, and other more action oriented stuff but didn't see Conan or Toxic Avenger until I was older. That was also the time period of those kinds of films getting broadcast tv airings much more commonly (whereas now they're on streaming services and premium cable channels without edits).

I owned that T2 figure in the OP actually.

probably boiled down to IP cost. like a hypothetical two seasons of a saturday morning jurassic park show... whatever production company probably wouldn't see a return on that, but maybe i dunno

Would this count? It wasn't an R rated movie, but was definitely seen as more an adult game with even some (lots from what I remember) crazy parents thinking it was demonic and all this other shit. But then they made this:

eh... D&D wasn't really seen as an adult thing. It had an adult following and a kid/teen following but it's large kid/teen following at the time was the reason that the Satanic Panic happened, as parents didn't understand the game and just jumped into baseless fears with both feet.

Did someone bring this up recently? I seem to be remember seeing someone talking about this subject before since a lot of these appear in my memory, but a lot of them I've never heard of before. Weird!

It is really strange though, but I mean I don't see the harm of it.

You could find Alien and Predator figures at Big Lots in my area into the early 2000s. Big Lots bought the stock in bulk from other toy stores and you could see sharpie'd out price stickers.

Yeah I guess you're right. I remember my parents forbade me from playing it but I did anyways lol.

This was good though!

Totally. I loved this cartoon, had a really good cast of characters and was fun to watch!

I remember a kid on our bus having a really crazy Predator action figure with a ripped out spine accessory and everything. Kids toys back then were fucking wild.

There was definitely an element of "these are your older siblings toys, they're EXTRA cool."

While I know for sure there were instances of just MPAA (and other local agencies) being overall harsh on some films, there absolutely was so many moments where you'd go "Huh???" at the kids cartoons based on those movies. Some of the above examples are such instances.

Weirdly, if I recall, Robo Cop was super popular with Kids, even without that cartoon. Same with Conan the Barbarian. I think that's likely what led to the creation of those cartoons, honestly.

I think one show I really enjoyed as much as I did the movie was Men-in-Black. While this wasn't inherently an Adult only movie, the cartoon was arguably very toned down in comparison, but somehow managed to still really keep the goofiness and overall feel of the movie. Now, whether or not I'd probably feel the same way going back to it as an adult, I don't know, haha.

Nah, that was more a parody of dumb celebrity-based toons like the Mr. T cartoon and Chuck Norris's Karate Komandos.

The D&D cartoon came out around the same time as the "Red Box" version of Basic D&D, which greatly sanitized the game after the moral outrage started, as well as making the game in general easier to learn for kids (who were already a huge part of the success of the '81 version of BD&D), so they were clearly pivoting towards it being a kids game at that point (though most of the darker shit was still in Advanced D&D).

Oh thanks I didn't know that. I totally remember Advance D&D from back then but never would put that together without knowing this part.

I remember Mezzo Forte coming in Netflixs(or was it Prime video?) anime category with a family friendly rating. Kind of weird considering it was a hentai movie. But no, they turned it into a mainstream anime.

I remember hanging out with my 13 year old uncle and his friends when I was 4 during the early 90's and damn, they really got into some crazy shit, and that was with me around.

A rated R film wasn't a big deal. It wasn't until all those watchdog groups or whatever started to make everything a big deal that parents really started to worry.

I was a huge fan of TMNT cartoon as a kid. So when I saw the original (black & white) comic book in store I just had to have it. Boy, that was quite a shock for my 8yo self when I saw all the blood, killing, curses and Shredder dying at the end. And don't even get me started on a swarm of mousers chasing April through sewers with intention of killing her.

I had (well, they were my older brother's) Robocop toys when I was a kid, and it's only like 10 years ago that I saw actual footage of the movie. I was shocked to see how violent it was lmao
