It's a shame when people too stupid to see the sub was mocking them took over and turned it into a hate sub.

At least GCJ has an amazing mod team and culture so this can't happen to them.

I just find the whole idea of voting on comments to be a really, really, really bad idea. It shapes the way people talk or don't talk, especially younger people.

Oh, that we can agree on for sure. It's a popularity contest that doesn't invite conversation unless you're there at the exact time. I especially hate it for shows I'm watching and want to discuss, I usually like looking up the shows subs and episode hubs to see what people think of each episode ( used to do this on AVClub). With weekly shows it isn't as bad but couple this with Netflix's dumping a season in one day, everyone talks about it only on the day it releases because everyone binges shows in 1 or two days. And everyone joining the part later can't join the discussion.

They targeted gamers.

Gamers.

We're a group of people who will sit for hours, days, even weeks on end performing some of the hardest, most mentally demanding tasks. Over, and over, and over all for nothing more than a little digital token saying we did.

We'll punish our selfs doing things others would consider torture, because we think it's fun.

We'll spend most if not all of our free time min maxing the stats of a fictional character all to draw out a single extra point of damage per second.

Many of us have made careers out of doing just these things: slogging through the grind, all day, the same quests over and over, hundreds of times to the point where we know evety little detail such that some have attained such gamer nirvana that they can literally play these games blindfolded.

Do these people have any idea how many controllers have been smashed, systems over heated, disks and carts destroyed 8n frustration? All to latter be referred to as bragging rights?

These people honestly think this is a battle they can win? They take our media? We're already building a new one without them. They take our devs? Gamers aren't shy about throwing their money else where, or even making the games our selves. They think calling us racist, mysoginistic, rape apologists is going to change us? We've been called worse things by prepubescent 10 year olds with a shitty head set. They picked a fight against a group that's already grown desensitized to their strategies and methods. Who enjoy the battle of attrition they've threatened us with. Who take it as a challange when they tell us we no longer matter. Our obsession with proving we can after being told we can't is so deeply ingrained from years of dealing with big brothers/sisters and friends laughing at how pathetic we used to be that proving you people wrong has become a very real need; a honed reflex.

Gamers are competative, hard core, by nature. We love a challange. The worst thing you did in all of this was to challange us. You're not special, you're not original, you're not the first; this is just another boss fight.

Fuckin' finally. I reported a post a couple days ago and went ahead and reported the subreddit too. I'd like to think my voice, added with other people who saw the joke degrade into a troll farm, finally reached reddit.

Post I reported said: "I unironically hate minorities. I just really hate them."

I suppose I should thank this experience for teaching me how satire can be turned in on itself and become a recruiting tool for the shithead mentality originally satired.

Yes and no, it's pretty much fine if you stick to specific game subreddits. I never ran in to any problems in the subs I'm in.

Just don't go poking your head in to random threads on the home page, can also be said of ResetEra.

This is some serious false equivalence. There is no equivalent of kotakuinaction on ERA. I've run into problems all over the place. NeutralPolitics, a sub that's supposed to be about discussing political topics and interests without getting into partisanship was inundated with shits from The_Donald and they gaslighted the fuck out of the place a few months ago to the point where I don't even bother going on there anymore. ERA has its issues, no question, but it's not Reddit.

Last time I checked out that place it was definitely a parody and was pretty hilarious at times. Doesn't feel like it was that long ago too. Crazy how fast shitheads can take over like that.

edit: maybe I was thinking of GamingCircleJerk

Moviecirclejerk is still pretty good in that way. Every now and then some incel type stumbles into the subreddit and doesn't get the joke, in which case they're usually made fun of while it all goes over their head.

GRU was trash from the getgo. Ironic racism is still racist. The only memes that were funny back in the original days are the ones that went past irony and were just straight open mockery of racist gamers. Turned into gutter trash down the line and pretty quick. Good fucking riddance.

Yes, it is. Alongside r/moviescirclejerk, a man cannot be complete without kinos

The one good element of comedy out of the whole thing was Bottom Text, which essentially mocked gamurz as being too dumb to use an online meme generator and delete that line if they don't want it.

It's a pretty ephemeral joke. Nothing of value is lost.

What I mean is, don't go in to threads where you're bound to find Trouble. Because I believe alle the Reddit sucks folks either Wander in aimlessly in to the wrong places or go look for Trouble and then come back blaming the places.

I didn't mean to say resetera is reddit buy more like if you don't want trouble, don't look for it. Subject matter aside.

My interpretation of what happened wasn't that people took the "gamers are oppressed minorities," literally, but that there was a subset of people who thought that the part of the statement that was funny wasn't the fact that it was mocking gamer culture, but mocking the idea of an "oppressed minority" entirely. I.e. "oppressed minorities aren't real, so this statement about these dumb self-righteous gamers thinking they're one points out the absurdity of the entire concept". Either way glad they're banned.
