Over the past week you may have heard about a game called 'Rape Day' coming soon to Steam. Today we've decided not to distribute this game on Steam. Given our previous communication around Who Gets To Be On The Steam Store?, we think this decision warrants further explanation.

Mod Edit (Full Statement):

Much of our policy around what we distribute is, and must be, reactionary—we simply have to wait and see what comes to us via Steam Direct. We then have to make a judgement call about any risk it puts to Valve, our developer partners, or our customers. After significant fact-finding and discussion, we think 'Rape Day' poses unknown costs and risks and therefore won't be on Steam.

We respect developers' desire to express themselves, and the purpose of Steam is to help developers find an audience, but this developer has chosen content matter and a way of representing it that makes it very difficult for us to help them do that.

You don't say?

And I don't care about the context, this shit should not be here and it shouldn't take this much effort to get rid of it. Hell, it shouldn't even be there to begin with.

We respect developers' desire to express themselves, and the purpose of Steam is to help developers find an audience, but this developer has chosen content matter and a way of representing it that makes it very difficult for us to help them do that.

Why dance around it like this? Why not outright condemn them for making disgusting content and say it loudly "this shit will not be tolerated"?

God damn it, Valve.

Thank God for that. This was the first time I reported a game. Hopefully it's the last...

I mean, they do care. They care that it might hurt their bottom line.

I personally think it is a weak response by Valve, especially the reactionary thing.

It means I could easily pay 100$ for Steam Direct, promote a game that doesnt really exist and the screenshots just link someone to an alt-right site, might get popular because its "controversial" and then paid 100$ for advertisments...

I would imagine that in this case your imaginary game would fall under the "straight up trolling" category and end up getting kicked anyway.

Good. Took them long enough, tho.

Just covering the legal bases to avoid litigious folks coming at them. It isn't an excuse to have a game like that for nearly a month there, tho.

"Significant fact-finding" as if you'd needed "significant fact-finding" to figure out Rape Day is not something you should support lol.

I stand by my thoughts in the original thread...

I would venture a guess to say this developer knows the game won't be approved but that's not the point. If he truly wanted this to skate by he wouldn't have been so blatantly in-your-face with his agenda. My suspicion is his goal was to be as outlandish as possible, get people talking and get publicity. Several large gaming sites already have stories on this. As he is doing nothing illegal, he can not be punished. With said publicity he can direct the minority who are interested in his perverse title, because there will be many who otherwise would never have known about it, to his website/whatever he's trying to promote to buy it or other things directly from him.

"We think this decision warrants further explanation"? No. It really doesn't. The fucking title of the game says everything. And the developer succeeded in getting the attention he wanted. May he rot in fucking Hell for the rest of his putrid existence.

Yeah, but the problem is as soon as you pay the 100$ you can publish a storepage without it needing approval. That means till Valve removes it, it would stay up.

Also the comments, some guy with an anime avatar:

Yeah, r*ape is bad but killing is okay? Talk about bs.
Double standards here, both are equally bad and should be banned then.

Someone else:

Censorship on steam...

then remove all violent game visual novel politic satiric porn etc etc lets play peppa pig

For some reason I saw "removed from" as "announced on."

This was such a shortsighted policy in the first place and it's going to continue to cause PR incidents like this one

I'm not sure how you're expecting to make money here, considering Steam doesn't offer pre-orders for anything that's not already notable. I guess you can try to drum up publicity and direct people off-site?

Don't even bother.

These people think they're living on the edge where only they have this unique view on society's hypocrisy. You won't ever get through to people like that.

The idea of a "Behind the Curtain" part of the steam store was always going to be an issue with titles like this. Especially when currently anyone can go behind said curtain and put whatever they want on the shelves.

Valve's ambigiousness means there will be more titles with similar content but to a lesser degree to test the limits of what they will allow on their platform.

Not making money. It would be an ad to an alt-right site or whatever. The storepage just has descriptions of it, the screenshots have the link in it etc.

The weakest possible response.

All Steam cares about is money, and if they got money through a game called "Rape Day" they would take it gladly. It's just because of the bad press that they removed the game.

It's good that Steam gets some competition.

Pretty much. With that School Shooter game previously and now this, you would think the folks at Valve may be thinking twice on their stance of having Adult 18+ content on their store. After all, has any game under those conditions actually sold modestly on the store so far??
