Nah keep the public execution joke coming. If there are people who think their SM3DAS copy is unplayable after 31st March is Nintendo's problem, not ours. They could've done literally nothing and the situation would've been avoided.

Just chiming in to agree that pulling Mario 3D collection and Fire Emblem is just the biggest self-own. There are new switch customers every day. There are new Fire Emblem fans every day.

Making a new translation of an NES game, selling it for $6 and pulling it after a few months is just baffling.

Already got my Game & Watch so I'm covered on that. Got my 3D collection. Got a few 1st place finishes in Mario 35. Still trying to decide wether to open my FE Collector's Edition or just pay the 6 bucks and keep it sealed.

Ended up ordering the 3D collection today from BB since it's on sale and Nintendo is killing it for no fucking reason. So, you win I guess?

Can we get a sweepstake going for the next Nintendo apocalypse date? I'm guessing September 13th 2021

While Super Mario All Stars release on the Wii was limited as well and it was a previous existing game (a rom dump), was it actively advertised as a limited release?

They did do a reprint from demand, perhaps a potential of that as well with enough fan outcry?

On March 31st Nintendo will open a twitch stream for Mario's execution with viewers given the !kill command. The stream will be a plain green screen but will change to red once the deed is done. Because of the expected high volume of traffic in chat and the difficulty in calculating latency it will be impossible for anyone in chat to determine who entered the command that led to Mario's death. The only way for Mario to survive is if everyone refuses to enter the !kill command in the first day of April, which would be a level of cooperation humanity has never seen before.

As someone who doesn't yet have a Switch, the concept of games being available for an arbitrarily limited time is neat. The prospect of one day getting a Switch and not being able to play some of these games is so exciting.

Oh don't worry, you'll get the extra privilege and excitement of Searching Frantically on Ebay, and Paying Ridiculous Amounts of Money to a Scalper. Consider it as free DLC. And thank Nintendo for giving you so much.

I forgot Nintendo was doing this crap with Fire Emblem too!

If not for the silly title making me click on this thread I might have missed that, because this whole "buy within this tight window or else" thing is totally stupid and doesn't register for me as someone who generally buys games at a slow pace.

Haha, I thought it might do some work grabbing attention

Not really. 3D All-Stars sold a shit-ton off of the fear generated off it's limited release window and people thinking it might end up becoming a rarity in the very near future (which probably won't be happening considering how much it's sold and how many copies are still on store shelves). Like, they might have gotten a bit more money if this was available for the rest of the Switch's lifespan, but they sure as fuck wouldn't be reporting as big of an earnings report this year if they did.
I can guarantee you that most of the sales for 3D All-Stars were from casual players who didn't even know that the game was going to be available for a limited time. When will y'all realize that Era as a bubble doesn't account for 90% of the people who play games out there.

This isn't an "Era bubble" thing. It's literally part of how 3D All-Stars is being sold and marketed, even to casuals. To claim it isn't a significant driving factor for the collection's sales is just foolish.

My Twitter feed is chock full of people from across a broad spectrum of the gaming community flipping out over this. 90% is certainly a bit much, but I don't think this is a bubble.

I hope all of you whining about "RIP Mario" jokes are prepared for when they do the same thing to Link this year.

Man what if they up and announce Mario+

Or better yet, Mario 2, where he looks like Mario, jumps like Mario, but has the height of Luigi.

The 3D All-Stars collection was pretty poor overall. 64 and Galaxy play worse than on original hardware. Sunshine was the only one that hasn't suffered from any compromise, and even then they could have updated it more. Hope they put out something better in the future when they inevitably release these games again. No Galaxy 2 is still mind-blowingly disappointing.

Shame about Mario 35, it was a bit basic and repetitive but that is not a good reason to delist it. It is a unique game that should be preserved. Thanks, Nintendo for going the stupid route yet again.

Mario Maker 2 has supplanted the original for me, but I wish a few features weren't only possible in the first game. Sad to see it go.

Trust me, you're better off not playing it.

Sunshine is still one of the most underrated games of all time. It fantastic game all around and I am happy to see more people appreciate it thanks to this collection. Well it is the only silver lining that has come out of this situation I guess.

Oh and as for the hot take: The worst game in the collection is not Sunshine but the original Galaxy.

I know it's all subjetive but I can't agree with anything you said. I'm a massive Mario fan, but playing Sunshine last year was an extremely unenjoyable experience. The game is buggy, at times broken, incomplete, padded with bad filler content, and generally a bit of a disaster, even if the core concept is cool and works for a few minutes.

Galaxy on the other hand is filled to the brim with creativity, and while it's not as polished as its successor, still holds up really well.

This collection won't make people appreciate Sunshine, only make them understand why it was always the least successful 3D Mario game critically and commercially. Nintendo had no business putting this game out without a massive rework.

Playing Galaxy again just reminded me how simple the movement is and the game is far too restrictive and hand-holdy to a fault. It is generally too segmented and also It is far too basic and often boring even if the polish and variety are there. Galaxy is also extremely padded out, That problem isn't only exclusive to Sunshine.

My appreciation for Sunshine has grown over the years while Galaxy has pretty much slid in the opposite direction. Sunshine lacks a bit of polish but the core of the game is leagues above. Watching the high-level play of both games and the comparison is night and day. Though yeah it is all subjective and I don't expect to change any minds but I have seen plenty of people come around on the game even here on this site. I genuinely believe it is one of Nintendo's best games hidden underneath a layer of unpolished technical jank that is easy to ignore on repeat playthroughs. While the problems with Galaxy are far harder to ignore.

I agree that Sunshine is cool for speedrunning. The jank really adds to the experience, ha ha. But as a player, I found it awful.

Damn, this just reminded me that I want to get a copy of 3D All-Stars for in-case I get a Switch in the next few years. Gonna have to look around for a used copy I guess; I don't particularly want to give Nintendo money for it.
