What? Quake 2 RTX looks even better than it did at launch? Yup, Nvidia's Lightspeed Studios has returned to their remastered version of the 1997 id Software classic and improved visuals even more. Alex Battaglia - inevitably - has the full story.

The guns are way too shiny - I understand why they do it, it demonstrates the tech.. but I wish it could have been a bit more subtle. The levels look fantastic though. Everything needs a layer of grime/dust/wear. Or maybe the Strogg are really into cleanliness.

Indeed, the dynamic res is very nice though.

So when Nvidia releases their next gen cards and I get that 3080 Ti, the first game I will play with it is Quake 2.

I tried this on my 1060GTX from 2017.

It ran at a solid 3 fps.

Felt like 1999 all over again, trying to run Unreal on my Celeron 300 mhz.

I think the Unreal castle fly by was one of the first 3dfx enabled things I saw on those cards back in the day, I remember being in awe of how crisp the textures looked, and that glossy stone walkway was impressive for then too.

On topic, got an RTX card coming in a few days, eager to check out all these RT'd classic games.

nvidia should invest into half life 1 and 2 RTX. I think HL2 should totally be doable and it would be mighty impressive to the masses.

Looking much better now although trying some custom maps I saw some pretty gnarly temporal shading artifacts.

Also I can't get my balls to drop.
/drop_balls should spawn material test spheres but it doesn't work for me

These RTX videos are where Digital Foundry really shines, no other publication comes close to properly explaining what ray tracing actually does. Even Nvidia themselves do a poor job of it.

I appreciate the use of porno music to accompany the rotating fan volumetric shadows. Makes me sad my GTX1070 can barely run the game so I can't really experience them for myself.

This does look really good. Not my favourite of the Quake series.

Would be great if they could "Raymaster" (awful phrase) a game that might use light/Shadow to greater effect, like Thief 2. Or maybe just the first Quake.

I would LOVE a "raymaster" of HL1.

Also, I got like next to no fps when I tried this previously on my 1060 even at tiny resolution but finished building my new PC today and got locked 75fps (my not great monitor's refresh rate) with all the pretty RTX on.

If we still have an old Q2 disc, can we just copy the files over from that to the RTX version to play the full game and not the shareware version?

It looks nice but also a very different aesthetic for the sake of realism. Hopefully more of these classics get the upgrades.

One Thing is that the aesthetic is actually not that different, as you can make the time of day and lighting intensity nearly the same as the first game if you want really. But then the video would be dark, Brown and Red and really uninteresting! Quake 2 was not particularly full of variety and contraaring visuals when it came out!

If anyone wants to see some trippy stuff, download the custom map Avarice & Torment and play it with this.

Would love to see this in VR.

I'm guessing Half Life 1/2 or Unreal 1/2 is next
Funnily enough, Half-Life 2 already has functionality for full reflections, though this is mainly limited to water and mirrors. Yeah, bit of a surprise to me, too, when I replayed it recently. Full reflections are easily enabled in the graphics options and barely cost anything in terms of performance - I'm guessing HL2 was just before the threshold where non-raytraced reflections stopped being viable.

Wait, does that work again? Last time I checked, the developer had abandoned all support and updates, despite still selling the thing.

I'm using it to play System Shock 2 right now with my Xbox One controller. What I like about it is 1. I can download game profiles from there site for instant setup and 2. If I feel like making a slight alteration to the button setup of a profile it lets me pick from a group of actions that take place in that particular game(jump, reload, quicksave, crouch, etc) instead of just showing me what key that button is mapped to on the keyboard.

Pinnacle profiler is not the only way either, you have Controller Companion too, and of course the Steam Input system. There are lots of ways to make controllers work with KBM exclusive games.
