Too bad we won't have the senate.

Was this a referendum that had high participation? I know ones in the past were boycotted to the point of not producing a legitimate result.

We would need to overcome the disadvantage in the Senate to get this through.

Is there any data that makes it clear that Republicans would want to vote against it? As in, what do they base their refusal on? They would be stupid to vote against it if they actually hold a long-term strategy, evangelicals gain ground year over year there.

Wait what...they pay federal taxes but cant vote? I didnt know that (im from europe)
It's pretty wild, they have US passports and everything. So you can have an American (from one of the 50 states) living in Europe that can vote, but American living on soil of United States can't. I'm European as well, but that's how I understand it.

How have republicans propagandized the Puerto Rico issue? They obviously don't want more liberal seats, but they usually couch their opposition in conspiracy. A quick Google just shows Mitch saying they won't allow it, but no stated reasoning other than "radical libs."

Another in the long line of referendums that probably won't lead to statehood. At least we stand a chance in 2022 if Democrats somehow manage to hold onto the House

They just don't talk about it at all. Puerto Rico would only really actively hurt them in presidential elections, otherwise it would most likely be pretty purple. The main problem for them is that if they entertain Puerto Rican statehood then they have to entertain DC statehood and they really, really don't want that.

Is chance at Senate majority truly cooked?

yes. 2022 is our best shot.

Why do they need to keep having referendums? Wouldn't the Congress just ask for one if necessary when they make the decision?

Actually with how some of the Hispanic trends have been in the vote, they may not be an a full no like many think. Puerto Rico politics is not automatically blue by a long shot. It is ridiculous though having an island with double the U.S. citizen count of Hawaii not having representation. Need to be "in" or "out" at that stage.

This is definitely reactionary after Hurricane Maria because last time this referendum came up In 2012 over 54% notes no and we now have a 7 point swing for yes.

If they for one second believed it a boon to bring PR into the fold, Republicans would do it.

Well it's not like this is going to happen immediately even if the Dems took the Senate this year. This is a non-binding referendum, so I'd imagine PR will need to go through a more formal and binding process to solidify their request for Statehood, draft a State Constitution and present it to Congress, which will probably take a while as is. Bitch McConnel won't move on it of course if it comes across his decaying lap, but in 2 years time Dems are going to have a really good shot a taking the Senate again. PR might not be ready to formally request statehood until then.

If the Democratic Party felt, like, very strongly about Puerto Rico statehood, they could bust out some 1800s-styled compromises (except without slavery this time fortunately).

Something like, "Puerto Rico becomes a state but it's first two Senators are agreed to be Republicans" or "Puerto Rico is a state now and we're splitting Wyoming into Wyoming and West Dakota."

Puerto Rico
Hello there, before any one comes out to celebrate this, just to let you all know this doomed us to 4 more years of the pro statehood party PNP in the Governorship of Puerto Rico. Because of this the administration that:
- Let thousands of us die after Hurricane Maria

- Let donated medicines go to waste

- Mocked our lost ones and poor

- Dilated government help till a public official appeared to take photo-ops no matter who died got 4 more years because of this.

- Hid supplies from our southern municipalities after the January earthquakes

- Mocked the suffering in said municipalities

- Still have people living in their cars or in tents in said municipalities

- Just some mere months till the election changed the law to make fraud easier

- passed a newer more conservative Civil Code

Got reelected and have another 4 year run.

So even if it leads to a hostility warning, if you celebrate this because of how we may play as pawns into your Ds and Rs game, please FUCK OFF! People here on the island are still trying to process what happened, people suffering because of how this horrid administration will get a continuation, and families will now be separated as many hoped for a administration change to have a bit of hope for staying here.

The only possible argument against this was Puerto Rico voting against it. Now that has gone. 3 million US citizens being taxed without being represented. That's as un-American as it gets.

To people saying this can't happen due to the likely 50/50 Senate split, wouldn't Harris be the tiebreaker?
Odds are the Senate will be no less than 51 R/49 D, not 50/50. And if it was 50/50 then it would depend greatly on how leadership is handled which is impossible to predict at this point but would likely prevent any Puerto Rico or DC bill from seeing the floor

They should be allowed to vote. But while I could be mistaken, the island seems often right-leaning when it comes to elections, so a practical detriment to the left.

Republicans would be dumb to say no. That's more votes and Senate seats for them. So I don't think it's an automatic no from Mitch.
