Yeah I'm sure Sony wants to deal with tons of people using porn pics as their avatars.
I normally pick avatars of Sony exclusive games. AAA game companies will provide decent avatars.

Make everyone on your friendslist a "real friend" and you can use whatever you want.
My PSN avatar is and always will be Kat's guardian Dusty, because the majority of them really just suck.

This isn't an issue on any other platform that allows you to use whatever image you want. For example, I tried putting my avatar here as my gamer pic on Xbox and I was immediately swapped to a default avatar (and quite frankly, how dare they). There are systems in place preventing provocative imagery from being used. This is hardly new.
Why not just make it the standard though for anyone and everyone to see.

If anything I wish I could just buy avatars after certain games have been out for a while. Never going to have that Nier avatar or other digital deluxe games that come with avatars.
How? All I see is a "Profile Picture" that only close friends can view.
Lol I take it you don't play on Steam, because I've seen some extremely offensive avatars on there.
Yeah that's pretty much the only way you can. If you just make everyone "close friends" in options, you could use the pictures you want and only those close friends will see it.
I don't think Sony has much trust in the shit people would try to set as their avatar, especially when so many kids play on the platform.

Considering the kind of shit Valve allows to be said on community forums there, it doesn't surprise me it's not a well regulated platform. Basically, just do what the Xboner already does in being able to detect provocative imagery.

The Xbox ones aren't much better sadly. The free ones on both seem to be left over art work from something. There is some nice ones available for under a dollar. But most are a rip off.
Although I'm sometimes bewildered by the garbage that manages to pass clearance and get put up on the store as avatars, I'm glad that we can't use our own images.
The reason?
I don't wanna see cropped anime porn, low-res JPEGs, or generally cringy / poor taste avatars. You'd likely start seeing a lot of that, so it's definitely a blessing and a curse.
