Yeah, this is a good point. Even for someone who is supposedly "technically literate", what am I supposed to be listening for? I sure as hell don't know. I ended up just selecting what sounded the "best" to me.Does *anyone* like PS5's weird rushing-water surround sound test? Kyle Orland and I are still baffled as to whatever the heck those five sound options are supposed to tell you. None of them offer an apparent halo or dome of sound.

Seemed pretty straightforward to me, I haven't bothered to try out their impact on actual game audio but the test worked fine as described. Each profile did sound slightly either (physically) higher or lower to me - I felt a little basic when the default profile was the one that sounded level to my ears. Maybe y'all have ears that Cerny needs a photo of.Does *anyone* like PS5's weird rushing-water surround sound test? Only one of them sounds right to my ears. The others all sounds off.
Sounds fine to me, but I'm also not plugged in through the controller. Is that how you're plugged in?
Exactly what i came to post and i definitely noticed the differenceWell for me personally, I'm pretty sensitive to sounds so when I heard it and it said to raise or lower the sound so it's ear level and not below or above you, I immediately noticed the difference. YMMV of course.

What's confusing about it? You pick the one that sounds level.Following the Road to PS5, I expected a much better and significantly easier to understand method to finding ones closest HRTF than whatever is in the PS5 now. It's honestly so baffling.
My audio experience has been pretty good once I set everything up, but the higher/lower UI + accompanying sound is so confusing.
I use a DAC and amplifier with my studio headphones at my desktop. That was a massive difference. The PS5's 3D audio, in comparison, sounds terrible on those same headphones.Lol this is like the "I can't tell between 1080 and 4k" but for audio. Some people think it's life changing, others are meh.

It's just setting an audio 'height' for your ears, compared to their relative location to the drivers. If you change the setting back and forth the sound should seem like it's going either go up or down, as in above or below your ears.Does *anyone* like PS5's weird rushing-water surround sound test? Everyone's ears are different. Personally speaking I despise 3D audio solutions—Tempest, Sonic, Atmos headphones, etc. I keep them all off.Lol this is like the "I can't tell between 1080 and 4k" but for audio. Some people think it's life changing, others are meh.
I'm using Astro a10's (cheap Garbo really) plugged into the controller. Demons souls sounds phenomenal and ACV is a muffled mess.

Yes, exactly, I would much prefer personalized sound profiles. I have these pair of Even H4s and they build a profile of your hearing based on this sound test you complete in an app. It works great and funny enough a 50$ pair of headphones (they were on clearance, might still be) is my most used pair of headphones today.Yup, exactly this. Maybe it will change when we get some of the ear photo solutions they talked about, but no 3D audio has ever sounded good to me. It has this muffled sound like the OP was describing. Not just the PS5, but all those simulated 3D audio engines and other games that have been lauded for their 3D audio like Half Life Alyx.
Hopefully the more personal profiles can fix this for me in the future.
Yeah I have to say I've never been impressed by any 3D audio solution yet.
