I just think that other consoles have had such better names -

Gamecube, Dreamcast, XBox 360, Sega Genesis, Switch - even Nintendo 64 is better than "dur hur big number means better" because it was a little creative about it.

It gets the job done and I'm actually not too too upset about it despite appearances to the contrary. I just think that it's a bit boring is all.

I think that feeling is pretty widespread regarding this thread.

Every console name since Sega died stopped making consoles sucks anyway.

PlayStation 5

It's clean, it's simple, it's classic. Change for the sake of it is dumb. As the world tumbles into choas, PlayStation is here as the great constant.

There is no reason what so ever the Playstation brand should ever move away from the numbered name. It literally sells on that alone.

here
when they named the PlayStation 2 the PlayStation 2 and it became the biggest selling home console, they had a successful naming strategy and it would be stupid to throw that away

Its bad because some people will be left behind. I mean do I have to play a PS3 before playing PS4 to understand the plot?

Fuckin yipeekayay
Never understood why MS and Nintendo do their methods instead, confusing as a brand imo

heck, the fact that no other console makers seem to do this is even more of a positive for sony at this point

I really wanted something cool. Once you start reaching numbers like 5 and 6 it gets to be a bit much.

Are they really just going to keep doing this until the end? See you on the PS7 in 2029?

Orbis was a badass codename for PS4. Vita was cool too - a shame it got tied to a doomed handheld.

Alas, it seems we are stuck with the "PS5" for this gen.

Happy about this... or no?

Yeah, ditching 25 years of globally recognised branding makes complete sense.

I'm now convinced that this thread is either a drunk thread, or a giant troll.

Because otherwise nothing makes sense.

why NOT stick with the convention? 1, 2, 3, 4....Pro Max! , well, 5 makes perfect sense.

it's easier to stick with numbers rather then coming up with cool nicknames

I am actually honest surprised that Sony is the only one that does numerical consoles. It's so smart and clear that I see no reason for them to change it

Sony likely looks at how silly it is that other companies always have to find a new name for their console and sighs a sigh of relief

Also Playstation whatever number is now deeply rooted in pop culture and society

people do satire pieces or jokes about the future and say things like the PS9 or PS11 and people get it as a reference point on how far you are into the future

not so much if they followed the confusing subtitle route

It's perfect branding. You know what the product is. Zero chance of confusion.

It would be a mistake to ditch the numbers.

I'm glad they follow the same conventions so I never have to worry about crappy names like Wii, Wii U, Stadia and especially One.
i imagine the brand team is more focused on the designs and logos and colors and whatnot

but when it comes to naming stuff

quote-i-want-to-get-a-job-naming-kitchen-appliances-that-seems-easy-refrigerator-toaster-blender-mitch-hedberg-129-5-0532.jpg

Except when you have to add "Or" šŸ˜‰
