Basically, thread title. I have a rig with an GTX 970, i5-8400 and 16gb RAM and I really don't know where I want to go with next-gen.

I have an 1080 monitor display for my PC rig and an 4K 55'' TV with an LG C7 for console gaming. I don't really plan on going 4k with my PC (at least not now).

I also have a Switch for Nintendo gaming.

I really don't know, I work with an computer, I study with an computer, do I really need my gaming hobby to be in a computer aswell? PS5 would be just plug into the socket and be ready for the entire next-gen, meanwhile in an computer I have to worry about upgrading my CPU so it stops being a bottleneck, worry about changing my mainboard later on, maybe add more RAM memory depending on how Next-gen ends up doing. But at the same time I love the possibility of going full Ultra with my games with Ray-tracing on, have an insane possibility of games to play and what not.

I really don't know where to go, it could go either way, FUCK! I need someone to help convince me on one or the other because I'm having really hard trouble.

It really depends on your preferences. Which ecosystem do you prefer? Couch or chair? What kind of games do you care about? How do you prefer to play them?

Both are good options, it depends on your needs.

You don't really need a 3080 with 1080P.

I would say a PS5 since that sounds like the way you want to go. Then just build a new PC down the line when everything is cheaper since you'll have to upgrade more than your GPU.

Your CPU is a massive bottleneck for a 3080 at 1080p. Get a cheaper 10 series or a 20 series if you want raytracing.

Edit: You could get a PS5 and a used GTX 1070 for the cost of an RTX 3080.

I currently have a GTX 1070, but I will go with the PS5 first instead of a GPU upgrade. Why? Because you buy the PS5 once and get to keep it for 5 - 7 years.

After that, sure I might upgrade my PC to play next gen Xbox/specific pc games on them.

I think if you need to chose, I would get a PS5 or if you can wait to upgrade your entire rig in 2 years.

Your CPU would hold you back, so you would want to bump that up (maybe 8700/8700k) if you go 3080 route. Also, IMO, you have a better chance to get a PS5 pre-order vs 3080. Furthermore, 1080P is pointless to run with 3080 unless you are doing some really high frame rate competitive shooters.

Yar, I'd say PS5. Your 970 will keep you gaming at 1080p pretty decently for quite a while yet. You've got a 4K TV that would pair well with your PS5. And if you went 3080 you'd miss out on PS5 exclusives whereas if you pick the PS5 you'll be able to play pretty much everything for years to come.

At 1080p better wait for 3070 (or even 3060) and the price difference could be put towards a PS5 or a new CPU+mobo, but I wouldn't get too hopeful about it being any easier to buy.

I'd personally pick the 3080, but going off your post it sounds like you're leaning towards a PS5. You probably will need to do all that upgrading you mentioned, and you would want a better monitor in the near future. If that's all too much of a hassle, which your post makes it sound like it would be to you, I'd just go for the PS5.

PS5 will be more than enough for gaming on that LG C7 of yours compared to upgrading your PC.

I'd say only upgrade your PC if high refresh rate is a high priority for you.

I had an i7 2600k throughout some of the ps3 generation and probably a little over half the ps4s. And I played all games better than the ps3/ps4 version. Witcher 3, SFV, Division, probably all multiplatform games. All i did was upgrade the gpu, until finally like 2 years ago I built a whole new pc because intel stopped being cheep with the cores. I never worried about ram or cpu. I just started upgrading gpus because I started doing 4k.

I mean anyone who says you don't need a 3080 for 1080p never tried to run a raytraced game far over 60fps. Plus a 970 is quite out of date now. I agree your PC could use a bigger overall jump.

I love PC gaming, I also work on a PC (although a work provided one).

For the time being I would suggest the PS5, but it really depends on what kinds of games you want to play. A 3070 or a 3060 might be a better fit for your current PC.

How Much CPU Does the GeForce RTX 3080 Need?

Breaking the bottleneck

EDIT

Skipped over the "1080p" part. Even then, even if you bottleneck there, if you have 150fps... who cares if you have 30 more?
Did you read those graphs? A 30+ fps avg loss at Ultra in their test is a pretty significant bottleneck. OPs i5-8500 falls between the i3-10100K and i7-4770K tested in that article.

Edit:
If you were thinking of pairing the new king of the GPUs with a Core i7-4770K (overclocked) from mid-2013, or maybe even a 3770K or 2600K, the worst-case results at 1080p should at least give you pause. There are plenty of situations where your maximum performance is nearly cut in half. With the RTX 3080, the Core i9-10900K is 70% faster at 1080p medium, though the gap drops to 47% at 1080p ultra.

That there is a bottleneck.

Edit 2: My bad saw your edit lol. Still, the numbers are not saying you're pulling 150 fps on Ultra settings and why would you buy a $700 GPU to run at 1080p medium settings over a PS5? And those are average numbers you're talking about, bottlenecks rear their ugly heads at the 99th percentiles and if you're feeling your game drop from upwards of 120 fps down to the 70s and 80s that is not a good experience. Not to mention we don't even know if OP has a high frame rate display.

Not sure I would invest in such a powerful GPU right now if you have no interest in going beyond 1080p.

Kinda sounds like you're leaning toward the PS5 and trying to justify the 3080. Just go with the PS5. Get a 4080 in a couple years when you're ready to take your PC up to 4K.

And? That means he's just future-proofing a purchase down the line. Like I said, Even if he gets 120fps instead of 160+, it's still quality gaming. Heck, it becomes less impactful if he turns RTX on. He did say that he plans to upgrade the rest later on. In which case, I agree with the pruchase. If he goes 4K, there's no bottleneck anymore even with his CPU.

Why You Can't Future-Proof Your Gaming PC - ExtremeTech

Trying to future-proof a system is a fool's errand. Plan your purchases intelligently, but don't pay a premium for features you can't use yet.

Literally zero reason to buy a 3080 if you still plan on gaming at 1080p. It's a waste of money since most of that power won't even get used.

PS5 would be my choice, but it doesn't matter anyway since both are completely sold out everywhere.

Well, at least where I live, literally the same shop has a PS5 available for pre-order and RTX 3080 sold out.

There's been rumors for a 3080 with 20GB VRAM, possibly coming within a year as the 3080s. That's the one to go for imo.

don't listen to the people saying you can't use a 3080 at 1080p

you can do fancy shit to make the games run at a higher internal resolution and the image will look even better

PS5, because you will be able play all big games of the next 6-7 years without having to worry about upgrades or literally anything.

Get a 3080 and a better monitor. Good 1440p high-refresh monitors have gotten fairly inexpensive.

Get a 20-series card or like a 3070 or 3060 if you're committed to staying at 1080p.

I had planned to go 3080, still do (3070 maybe depending on stock), bit I kinda accidentally pre-ordered a PS5 when just being curious if I could get one from Walmart a few nights ago. While my quest for a 3080 has not been fruitful and has honestly just been incredibly frustrating. Might end up keeping the PS5 unexpectedly.
