Sounds like a gimmick to not make PS4 controllers BC, Microsoft already said current Xbox one controllers work on the new system so I hope Sony follows

No light and a great battery life is all I want if we have to use new controllers
Just because they filed it as a patent doesn't mean it will ever make it onto the actual PS5 controller

The vitality sensor lives-- with Sony! Betrayalton!
I feel like these vitality sensor things are forever just stuck in pantents and never happen.
Didn't the Wii have a heart rate sensor or something? I could've sworn I remember a device called the Vitality Sensor or something
It was shown off, but never actually released.

Has become meme.

Ok, I wonder if this gimmick will work fine. I hope they can make this gimmick cheap. I rather perfer them to put it in HD rumble or motion tech

I want a controller that tracks my urine level by detecting the pissitrons that are leaking out of my hands.

i'm sure this feature is only to measure in what moments the gamer gets the most high out of the experience.

The resistant triggers are already something people will say cool the first time they experience it then stop giving a shit. Controllers are one of those things companies still feel the need to inject new features into but more often than not those features go unused and are nothing more than a cost sink. Sony could have simply improved the flaws of the DS4 and gamers would be happy.

Will bring a whole new level of meaning to bloodstains in a potential Bloodborne 2.

I can't wait for the speaker on the DS5 to groan in disgust when someone with sweaty palms picks it up

Oh, goody. Jam as much useless shit in the controllers as possible so you can charge $90 a pop. The DS4 is fine, don't turn PS5 into Wii2. If I want to sweat, I'll go to the gym. I don't need pixelated Jillian Michaels screaming at me, Sony.

But will the sweat detectors compensate for junk food residue left behind by that one grubby friend who never washes their fucking hands?

My hands never sweat

This just reads like an excuse for Sony to tell me to "go outside and take a break" message mid destiny raid.

They will implement this and use for Kojima new horror game. When the controller feels sweet and no heart rate it will call 911.

Heart rate sounds cool.
180bpm playing RE8 VR.

This would actually be useful for monitoring user (dis)comfort in VR - or even for acute incidents, panic attacks etc - and adjusting certain parameters accordingly. VR comfort isn't a solved problem so research into that is worthwhile.

Speaking of, I imagine this patent is probably a matter of research rather than imminent commercialisation plans (i.e. in DS5). But it was cheap to implement for VR future proofing it might be worthwhile.

bad idea...what about people who naturally sweat more...I don't want my game difficulty lowered based on my heartbeat or sweat levels...if I wanted lower difficulty I would go into the Settings and change it myself...

If it can track your heart rate and suspend the game when your heart rate goes too high for safety that would be good.

I prefer long battery life and quality control, not gimmics. Not this way.gif
The article I read about this yesterday on USGamer (link grabbed via SIFTD) said the patent called this a "biofeedback sensor attachment for a controller," so hopefully it'll just be something I can never put on my damn controller.

I haven't seen a link to the actual patent to look at, though.

If the controller detects an incoming rage quit it immediately kills the players on the other team to help you win

Sony going to end up sending an ambulance when I sit all sweaty on my couch, five rum and diets deep, mid temper tantrum hurling expletives at Bloodborne 2.

In all seriousness, I agree with everyone that suggests this won't really lead anywhere interesting, it's just a patent claiming.

Cool. Perhaps this to sense when someone is about to blow chunks playing vr and the system switches itself off.

It's just for patents for potential application don the line. So it's for the PS9.

The first thing that came to mind after reading the title was Steve Balmer and his "Developers" excitement, only holding a DualShock 5.
