Sony's first attempt at a videogame console left us with the incredibly sleek PSX and PS One. These things are seriously beautiful:

They're so pretty I have a PS One on my desk just to look at it from time to time (and press the power button, it's a satisfying button to press), and personally I've always felt that the PS2 was kind of a step back in aesthetics:

Don't get me wrong, the PS2 Slim is pretty as well. But I've found myself liking the design of the fat one less and less as time went on, and the Slim is definitely not as stylish as the PS One either. Then we have the controllers:

The first Dualshock has a nice contrast between the dark buttons/stick and the beautiful gray shell; I don't know how to put it into words, but the whole thing feels balanced to me. The Dualshock 2 on the other hand is... kinda meh. It feels unbalanced to the right where the colorful buttons are, and the sticks, d-pad and shoulder buttons kinda blend with the shell.

So, Era, which aesthetics do you prefer? The PSX's or the PS2's?

Personally i always preferred the PS1 scheme and look, although only the 'fat ps1'.

PSone and its disc tray opening just felt amazing and the controller looks so stylish and 90's.

PS2 menus i love, but its look was never appealing to me. Feels like a weird mid way point between the PS1's 90's aestethic and the PS3&4 more sleek and minimilist look, but not really achieves either

PS1. The PSOne specifically is like a top 5 all-time console in visual aesthetics.

The PS2 looks like a DVD player and started the trend of consoles just being boring boxes.

One of the worst console designs ever: the HDD is encripted (even to this day) and can't be replaced so when it dies, you can't use any of the PSX unique stuff... and these days I'm pretty sure 50% of those machines are fully dead. In Japan searching for a 100% working PSX is a magical journey.

Also: the controller port is BEHIND THE CONSOLE, like it's CD-I or some shit.

i'd say most of the PlayStation revisions have looked a lot better but it stops at the PS3 slim for me, the PS3 super slim was ugly, the Vita 2000 looked cheap and the design of the PS4 hasn't changed 90% and tbh all 3 of the consoles look pretty ugly

Honestly all three PS3 models are pretty unappealing to me. The original Slim looks okay I guess. I agree that the original PS3 Foreman Grill design is atrocious and even less preferable than the boring modern designs, though I can see why it might appeal to some people.

I think the original PS2 is really cool looking, but original PSOne is so near and dear to my heart I'll pick it by default.

The original PS1 is still iconic, the PS2 always just felt like an hommage to Atari

Edit: the PS2 design is even based on an unreleased Atari design

The PSX is a classic but the PS2 vertically stood like a black obelisk of power. It was a simple design that worked so well.

I think the slim would be the best, from an aesthetic...

...if it didn't like to eat discs in a lot of the revisions. RIP my Japanese PS2 Slim...

Both original consoles are horrid, both slims are great. I still look at the PS2 slim every now and then and go, "HOW?!?!"

I thought the PS2 looked really expensive and unsual when I first saw it as a kid. It's really a classic vertical design that became norm with the PS3/4.

I always thought the OG PS1 was an ugly console. Same with the N64. Saturn was probably the best looking of the 3.

Some of those 90s designs did not age well.

The PS2 Slim was the ultimate godsend for me due to the fact that I owned a defected OG PS2 that barely worked. It wouldn't play anything of the sort.

I can't fathom the amount of times I had to mail that thing back to the manufacturers.

I'd say PS1 if it matched the color palette of PSOne. The darker grey irks me, but I love the boxy look.

I love the battleship grey of the PSX, but from a console design perspective I prefer the sleek geometric, art deco-inspired PS2 (though I wasn't a big fan of the PS2 logotype).

I like the PSOne best, those rounded corners look really nice. I've never seen the PS2 slim in person, but I'm not a fan of the original design. It's big, ugly and notoriously unreliable, I've had to open mine up several times to fix disc read errors. Last time I tried it still worked, but the fan is stuck at a constant jet engine level now.

PS2 Slim easily followed by the PS3 Slim. The rest are all horrible. Sony uses the worst plastic known to man.

OG PS2 looked like something special back then and still holds up well, it was a very good design I think, the others less so.
