Surprise, surprise.

Allegations of racism against the Capitol Police are nothing new: Over 250 Black cops have sued the department since 2001. Some of those former officers now say it's no surprise white nationalists were able to storm the building.

Since 2001, hundreds of Black officers had sued the department for racial discrimination. They alleged that white officers called Black colleagues slurs like the N-word and that one officer found a hangman's noose on his locker. White officers were called "huk lovers" or "FOGs" — short for "friends of gangsters" — if they were friendly with their Black colleagues. Black officers faced "unprovoked traffic stops" from fellow Capitol Police officers. One Black officer claimed he heard a colleague say, "Obama monkey, go back to Africa."

“No One Took Us Seriously”: Black Cops Warned About Racist Capitol Police Officers for Years

Allegations of racism against the Capitol Police are nothing new: Over 250 Black cops have sued the department since 2001. Some of those former officers now say it’s no surprise white nationalists were able to storm the building.

Read the article for more, which reiterates that Capitol police were warned prior to the riot/insurrection and points out that there have been other failures to address security threats in recent years. It also suggests poor cooperation between law enforcement institutions could have contributed to the failure to assess the security threat last week.

I apologise if I missed this being posted earlier.

Yep. This is the story of America in microcosm. White supremacy helps no one and causes so much harm yet it persists because this country is so unwilling to reckon with that fact and listen to Black people when we say that shit doesn't have to be this way.

And how much more suffering does the country have to endure before people actually start to listen?

I knew it would be bad, but over 250 lawsuits in the last two decades is absolutely insane.

The fact that nobody higher up thought "oh, we might have a persistent structural issue in our organisation" in all that time is telling.

MAGA more than anything else is a white nationalist movement. Racism is a core value. White America has seemingly never moved on from slavery and this is what we are left with.

The very concepts of institutionalized white supremacy and white privilege fly directly the face of the empowerment fantasy that is "Rugged American Individualism".

It's similar to the freakout that occurred when Obama gave his "you didn't build that" speech some of you older heads may remember.

For them to admit that there are (and have long been) forces at play in areas of high authority who's agenda is give advantage to "their" own people at the expense of "others" is a truth that's simply to much to handle.

And that's all assuming they ever gave a shit at all in the first place...

It has to affect white America in a large and meaningful way. If it's only a handful of white people affected, it will be waved away under "this would never happen to you because you're a hard-worker/faithful/in a better position"
Yup, look at King's letter from the jail. The everyday white person keeps this going with their indifference in choosing a side and it makes sense, why give up an advantage to level the playing field even in the long it helps you. We're creatures of the moment and it's our downfall.

It's ironic how in the end this caused the death of five white people while a black cop is being hailed as the lone individual standing in between democracy and authoritarianism.

White supremacy is always doomed to fail.

While I don't believe ACAB, I do believe bad cops are absolutely everywhere. The system is inherently broken.

We have an emergent white nationalist undercurrent that is actively surfacing. FBI reported growing numbers of white supremacist infiltration in the police more than 20 years ago. Now, the FBI seems fairly compromised. A new report out shows growing numbers in the military as well. I feel like even the illusion of a free and fair nation really hangs by a thread at this point because the government was nearly overthrown, and they likely had help from Congressional co-conspirators, as well as cover from Trump stooges recently supplanted in many high level areas of government. This is not going to last long, Democracy is failing for all to see, and half of the country is cool with that.

Hope this COUP act is but a start of what's to come. Congress needs to be on this hard

Americans support the COUP Act "...a significant majority of Americans support creating a national commission to investigate the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th.

66% of voters — including 61% of Republicans and 59% of Independents."

And then expand this to look at how law enforcement handled the BLM/Floyd protests around the country in the 2nd half of 2020. And if we're lucky, maybe we see some actual consequences and change afterwards.

It gets glossed over a lot but it can't be emphasized enough how much Lincoln getting assassinated and Andrew Johnson taking over the presidency and reconstruction lead to the problems we're living with today.

The South never experienced the reckoning they should have for inciting the Civil War and they were allowed to essentially regroup and continue living the same same culture of arrogance, terrorism and persecution of minorities for most of the 155 years that followed. A Confederate flag flying in the Capitol last week was the ultimate culmination of that failure.

Said it before, will say it again. After the civil war instead of what happened we should of hung them all from Davis and Lee down to the privates in the rank and file and all their possessions, estates, land, etc given to the freed slaves along with true governmental power and self rule and America might be a progressive healthy nation with true unity.

But yeah we have this dumpster fire instead, oh boy so proud of my heritage 😞
