https://variety.com/2019/gaming/news/prince-harry-fortnite-ban-1203180583/

The prominent member of the British royal family visited a YMCA in West London and spoke to mental health experts about addictive games and social media, saying that the latter is more addictive than drugs or alcohol.

Prince Harry specifically called out Epic Games' "Fortnite," saying, "The game shouldn't be allowed."

"It's created to addict," he said. "An addiction to keep you in front of a computer for as long as possible. It's so irresponsible."

Even if they could ban the current most popular game, another one is going to takes its place and that wouldn't fix the gaming addiction problem.
They should know better than that.

I hope he went and got wasted in Vegas again when he wrote this, since he definitely knows about alcohol.

Unfortunately he knows very little about video games.

Out of touch aristocrat says something stupid shocker. The only thing that keeps kids in front of a screen for hours on end is irresponsible parenting.

I mean... He's not entirely wrong. GaaS as a whole aim to keep people on the same game as long as possible, and some specific kind of games such as gachas and game with loot boxes can be seen as dangerous.

Ah yes, lets ban the whole game. Excellent advice from the royal family.

He also talks about how addictive social media is... less than a day after his Instagram account was set up.

His efforts to help people with mental health problems is laudable but he should maybe not talk about things he doesn't fully understand.

And I want his entire family out of the country but I guess we can't get what we wish for all the time.

He's not exactly wrong. The game is designed to keep you playing and paying. Banning is misguided but regulations around these kinds of games is sorely needed, not least of which is the fact that they do target children and young adults.
I mean, he's right in that it's created that way.

There was a recent video on this that really drove it home... I can't find it, anyone remember?

Yeah...kids totally didn't spent hours before the TV or monitor before the introduction of GAAS game.

You do realize that Fifa, Diablo, WoW, Civ, Football Manager had all of us sitting for a crazy amount of hours before the screen ? There will always be something. It's the parents responsibility to make sure that the Kids respect some boundaries.

Yeaa Harry loves that Apex, my man.

But come on, it wasn't "created to be an addiction" it was created among its competition to be better and more engaging to take away players from other ones like it. The market is shaped by what people want and it's a constant competition to make your title the best on the store.

If it dies another one will form in its place, its how the market works.

"It's created to addict,"
He's right, service games are a lot more harmful than regular games with a clear end point. Particularly when they're popular with children.

Harry is a steam user trying to stop the Epic Game Store from Money Hatting exclusives.

But real talk, I can't believe we are still doing the "demonizing of video games"

What's the point in the younger royals if they're going to come out with Prince Phillip tier disconnected nonsense?

Watch the video linked above. It's very much created to get people addicted.

You can't really deny that.

This doesn't mean "IT'S THE VIDEO GAME'S FAULT FOR X!", but it is true.

i really dont care if the game was created in a way thats "addicitive"

An adult should be able to recognize that, and a parent more so. Control your kids. Dont blame other people and things for your shortcomings/lack of ability to parent.

Plus, if its designed to make them spend money, who are the kids getting the money from? What 12 year old has a credit card?

Ill just never understand it. Same thing with parents complaining about their kids playing violent games. Hey dumbass, dont let them play them. YOU ARE A PARENT.

The headline sounds dumb, but the idea that a game is created to addict to sell microtransactions (random loot boxes or not) to kids is valid I think.

Games with the potential to bottomlessly spend can be dangerous to kids.
