I've got the staff now and it appears to work as I remember, been jumping up a few walls with it. I recall using that technique to scale a wall to get to the start of laser maze doll run in the Saturn version.

I am relieved from your screenshots to see they put a checkpoint before that. At least I won't have to do the runback after my sure to be many many deaths.

If anything, the checkpoints are very, very generous in this version. Almost too generous.

Congrats to Kaiser and Nightdive for finally getting this out. PS EX was the first time I played any variant of the console version; I loved it then and this is even better. Playing through on hard and its -brutal-.

For any Nightdive reps in the thread: any reason why the great CRT filter doesn't affect the UI/HUD and is it even possible to fix? It's the only reason why I'm not using it.

Lol at the main character being basically dudebro a dolphin.

Fixed that for you. You will understand in time.

Also something I noticed, in the Saturn version the health and weapon pickups would float instead of fall with gravity. On many sections later, I was used to jump grabbing power ups over chasms and platforms, now the items just fall into the lava/acid which sucks when you haven't collected the right items. The amount of times I instinctively ignored a weapon/health powerup because my brain was like "It'll be there later if you need it" only to see it sizzling on 1200 degree molten rock when I come back was a few too many times.

I picked this up on Xbox the other day and It's great, I'm really enjoying it and can see how it inspired games like Metroid Prime. I find it odd that there is no shotgun.

I owned a Saturn and a psx and never heard of this game until now. Just found my 8th artifact and heading towards the end. This game is really damn good. Thanks nightdive, definitely worth the 20$.

Edward850 hey not to bug you but man, thank you guys for keeping gems like this and Quake alive on consoles especially. Just cool as hell, I loved these games back in the day and love seeing them get the royal treatment. Pun intended for Powerslave I guess 😎

It's great to dive into Exhumed again- i remember playing it back on the Sega Saturn back in the 90's. It was such a technical marvel. Kudos to Night Dive studios for bringing this game back.

After messing with some settings, you can really get a similar look to the original.

This is as close as I could get it to looking like the OG Saturn version:

What were the settings you used?

DISPLAY SETTINGS:
Shading mode : Subtractive (Emulates how Saturn handles colour)
Resolution : LOW
Anti Aliasing : OFF
CRT Filter : ON
FOV : 60-74

ADVANCED DISPLAY SETTINGS:
Fixed Point Geometry : ON
Z-Clip Emulation : ON
Subtractive Shading : Mess with the Shadow Intensity, Darkening Strength and Shadow Contrast to your liking. Every monitor is different. The Saturn tended to render shadows/dark areas much more darker than PS1/N64.

VIDEO SETTINGS
Resolution : 1024x768 (While this isn't exactly the Saturns real resolution for the game, which I believe was about 320x224 or so, this is a 4:3 resolution and the LOW resolution and CRT will help give it that look anyway.

It seems the only thing you can't really emulate on the game for the Sega Saturn version anyway is the dithered water surfaces. Though honestly the water they used looks great.

That's pretty cool. I appreciate that Nightdive makes this possible. Personally I appreciate the cleaned up graphics.

I wonder what is next for Nightdive and Kex. Personally high on my wishlist are the Heretic and Hexen games. Maybe MS can make it happen once the Activision Blizzard deal went through.

Is there any way to have the textures bilinear filtered rather than pixellated?
Not in any way that would make sense. A lot of the textures and sprites are made out of multiple tiles, and would break visually if you filtered them. The graphics in this is explicitly made to be nearest rendered.

Besides, it's supposed to be pixel art, you know like Doom. But with the addition of the render pipeline taking advantage of it too. :P

I was thinking about this today and thought they would be good for Duke Nukem 3D but obviously that's already handled. It led me to think maybe they could do the other Duke games like Zero Hour justice.

Now I could see Shogo being a good fit too.

Ypu mean those third person Duke games? Oh yeah those could be interesting. Although I really fell out of love with the Duke character.

Shogo would be cool same as Blood 2 I guess. For Blood the were some rights issues though if I remember correctly.

I've gotten three artifacts now.

This game is really good. Such great enemy and level design. I love that they mix things up as you revisit levels. Exploding vases now wtf!

And those mummy homing shots are brutal.

Does playing on hard make enemies shoot more, or make these homing shots home in longer?

Also, how different was the original PC version? Is it a totally different game? Is it worth checking out?

How different was the original PC version?

Very.

Is it a totally different game?

Yes.

Is it worth checking out?

Nah.

The PC version is OK for what it is, but it's more of a bog standard FPS released around the time as vastly much better Duke 3D and Blood were about to drop. There's a reason people only talk about the console versions, and nobody really mentions the PC version.

Finished today.

It's a great game, but honestly, the hitbox is so laughably huge it actively hurt what is otherwise a great game. I get that Nightdive probably wanted to keep that hitbox the same size, and there are level design concerns for changing it (maybe have a second box that deals with damage and one that deals with environment blocking?), but it takes the game from an easy 8.5/10 to a 7 for me. Great level design, some fun encounter design, and the metroidvania like mechanics are awesome. Would encourage anybody who never got to play this but loves games from that time period to give this a go, it's absolutely worth the money.

Wow did the laser maze doll and it only took me 15 minutes of retries. Twin stick controls really do make this easier for me. I was stuck on that for literally weeks as a kid.

The PC version was closer to being like Blood, Shadow Warrior and Duke 3D and not only that it was built on the same engine. The PC version is a linear affair with levels progressing one after the other with no backtracking/powers to use and find new routes. If Build shooters are your thing I guess it is just ok.

This is the first level running on the excellent BUILD GDX, which enhances Build Engine games with some more modern features.

Also funny story for everyone else, there was meant to be a Powerslave/Exhumed 2 at one point that was meant to be a 3rd person action adventure with the ability to travel through time and affect the other time period with what you do, decades before TitanFall 2 and Dishonored 2 did.

I know it was kind of remade, but I'd go for a modern version of the original Tomb Raider.

On second thought, maybe not. I'm not sure it's the kind of game that lends itself to the modern QOL features that I feel Saturn/PS1 Powerslave benefited from.

Hey all, I'm thinking of picking this up as I'm in a bit of a mood to play a boomer shooter. How's the Xbox version compared to the PC version?

Can someone tell me how in the everloving tittyshits you progress through the Treasure Reliquary ?
If I float down and get the Earth Symbol, I can't jump over and through the lasers.
One time I managed to float down to the ground between the laser, but then I was essentially soft-locked between the Earth door that I had no key for and another door that was sealed shut.

Hit the switch in the upper level above the lasers and this will open a door/reveal a switch on the floor below (I forget which). This will lead to the lasers being turned off - you can then backtrack and get the symbol.

*edit* If this is the level I am thinking of!

Automated Fix has pretty much all the QoL features needed without turning in to a full remake:

  • Custom launcher to play the base game and Unfinished Business expansion
  • Unlocked resolution (runs in native resolution by default)
  • Improved graphics
  • Full soundtrack
  • Water color from the PlayStation version
  • Steam overlay support
  • No longer plays with DOSBox
  • Optional higher resolution or remastered cutscenes

I'm hoping for some miracle that would allow NightDive to work on updating and bringing back the 3DO version of Killing Time. I hold a very special place for that game in my mind (duck squishing effects and all!).

Also whilst we are at it.

PO'ed anyone? Anyone? Ok you can escort me back to my white wall lined cell. :P

Yeah, I'd love to play Killing Time more, but I've only played the PC version, and it doesn't play particularly well on modern PCs. I do hope it gets some sort of remaster that modernizes more aspects of the game, as it's always been this point of curiosity for me. I'm honestly surprised I've managed to not cave and purchase a 3DO for so many years, as it's not as though there aren't other games for the system I didn't want to try.

They've publicly announced SiN and Blade Runner remasters, but no dates on either of those.

Oh how did I miss those? Blade Runner is just an awesome adventure game. I was blown away when that came out. Very excited to see what they do with that one.

SiN was also kinda cool. I never played the expansion pack of that. Hopefully it will be included. Also gonna need a feature for slightly shimmy polygons on character models. That's like the Quake 2 engine look to me. 🤣

I'm now stuck on Kilmaat Colony yet again at f***ing lasers. The fact that there are seventeen thousand versions of this game - and this is yet another one - makes finding a working walkthrough somewhat challenging.

If it's where I think where you make it through a short laser maze, collect a key and then find yourself stuck in a room where the only exit is blocked by lasers. Walk along the striped walkway from start to finish and the lasers blocking the exit turn off.

That was a weird puzzle that seemed out of place.

Lol, thanks but I watched a YouTube video and the guy bomb-jumped up onto the platform instead.

The crazy moon jumps this game expects you to make are throwing me off. The critical path to a symbol involves jumping long distance and around corners.

Aaaaaand, now I'll probably pick it up just to try. Thank you too, KainXVIII for the link to the Twitter thread.

Good community building in here - appreciated.

I curse whoever designed the enemy placement on Pharaoh difficulty (my understanding is that it's different from Normal), some really frustrating bits. Game was great though, glad I stuck with it after the initial "oh shit there's no manual save" disappointment.
