I suppose the VISA and MasterCard thing terrified them more than the article

Pornhub is making major changes to its service following a New York Times article that highlighted how the site's lax enforcement of its policies has enabled child exploitation.

Among the changes: Pornhub is ending uploads from unverified users and banning the ability of users' to download much of the site's content. The company is also implementing new moderation policies and will release a transparency report in 2021. The changes come a day after Visa and Mastercard pledged to "investigate" their relationship with Pornhub parent company MindGeek.

The new rules will significantly alter key dynamics of the service, which will now impose limits on who is able to upload content to the site and block the ability for most of its content to be downloaded. Though the company will still allow users to upload their own videos, beginning next year it will first require people to complete an "identification protocol" in order to verify their identity. The site will also block all downloading of content "effective immediately," except for "paid downloads within the verified Model Program."

Didn't already have a team of moderators specifically auditing submissions? They really did not care and take actions now that everyone knows (mostly VISA and Mastercard probably).

Doesn't seem like they can ultimately control downloads given the ability to download content with browser add-ons. Not to mention screen recording. It looks good from a PR perspective though.

Sucks it took so long, but it's definitely a great thing to hear after several years of reading the same stories

Does this mean the endless stream of garbage low quality 78 second long videos being uploaded to the site will end? Hallelujah.

Was this to cut down on people uploading horribly illegal shit or to cut down on uploading copyrighted stuff or both

Unless I missed it, what does this mean for all content already on the site?
I imagine porn companies will be happy about this too, as it'll cut down or eliminate pirated copies of their stuff.

I guess the hope is that other tubes do something similar instead of trying to boost traffic by specifically not doing it.

I mean, yeah, but I imagine considerably less people are willing to go through that extra effort.

Xhamster, xvideos, et al must be dancing in the streets. At least until someone looks their way.

Dumb question but why would you need to download content, is it not a streaming site?

When people find the shit that shouldn't be there, they download it and trade it for stuff they don't have. On various apps and forums.

Wow big change in the online porn world. I'm assuming some other big sites will follow suit.

Yikes, I would've thought that it was there so you're not SOL when the power/internet are out and you can still watch stuff offline

Nothing, AFAICT. They already have processes for taking down illegal/guideline-violating stuff, those won't change. They're just slowing down the volume of incoming stuff to a level where those processes can actually function effectively.

Content creators can charge for their videos so some people might want an offline copy, especially if they paid for it.
Odd they'd allow downloads in the first place for content or is this people using third party or chrome/Firefox apps and not an actual download button?

Good this is happening, pornsites are long overdue to being cleaned out and it became obvious they weren't going to do that themselves. And I hope they can catch who were posting that crap because that's straight up evil.

Definitely was about the money. Something similar happened on Onlyfans too with Bella Thorne. Once the money is affected, companies bend over backwards in the snap of a finger.

They'll likely run into problems if they ever acknowledge it as a boon, but until then, yeah. I guess PornHub could always advertise the fact they're the 'safe' alternative to balance things out.

Can't believe I'm commenting on this thread (Being that it's about pornhub lol) but about damn time. The amateur shit was mostly garbage anyways and knowing what we know or even suspected, this should have been implemented a LOOOONG time ago.

Yes, it was an official download button but I think the content creator decided if it was enabled or not.
