They would've been able to accomplish something like that on PS5 if they kept the original design as well. Instead they changed the entire character into some generic CW prettyboy.
They explained very clearly that they felt while they did their best to match the facial mocap to the voice actor, in the context of remastering the game they did not feel the original face was close enough of a match to make it better on PS5 and thus felt they needed a new face that matched their voice actor's movement better.

This thread is interesting. Its really not all that surprising that fans are upset with the recasting, and its intriguing that so many people here act like this is "odd or strange". This would be the case with any popular movie or game. If suddenly they recast Tom Holland in the next spider-man movie, you would see a similar reaction(Really any movie, show, or game for that matter). The big issue fans seem to have with this decision though is that the new face looks younger. In the game Peter Parker is 23, but the new face makes him look more like a teenager.

Again the reaction isn't surprising. If you want to talk about "strange complaining" then maybe look at the "Who asked for Steve in Smash" crowd, when Minecraft is one of the most popular games ever made. Sometimes you have to look at different perspectives. I would even say its hypocritical when Resetera and im sure many users in here have complained about game-related decisions often.

To be clear, nobody should ever be attacked or harassed over things like this, but if we are simply just talking about fans being upset over recasting. That's hardly surprising at all.

Yuri is treating the backlash like a king though

This is nice

I get why some people are upset (but of course, acting like a baby like some are doing is not justified)

It's like changing Tom Holland in the Spiderman movies for another actor, but with the same voice. People would get mad and feel weird about it.

Honestly the "face" justification thing ...

I honestly don't buy it. Yuri mocaped the first game and the animations were perfect.

How wouldn't that be something that they noticed during development of the first game? Why they didnt change the model back then to fit Yuri's bone structure?

Tinfoil hat time: I think that they did because the new model looks a lot like Tom Holland (it really does) and that could boost sales even more

I prefer the old model, but I dont care enough for it. I'll buy the remaster anyways, love the new additions.

Storm in a teacup nonsense. You may see Peters face may be an hour at most. He is wearing a mask 99% of the time.

I wish we didn't give them the attention they're asking for. Sure, their opinions are valid but it doesn't mean we should highlight them.

So much for respecting the developer's vision.

I never liked the original Peter model. Just looked off and weird to me. Redesign looks a lot better even if very pretty boy looking. All that said doesn't really matter a whole lot either way. 90% of the game is spent with him in a suit.

I'd like it if he had Ben's hairstyle, but alas he'll be wearing spandex and mask most of the time.

I'm still not sold on the explanation given though. So many other games with with better facial capture (Uncharted, TLOU2, RDR2) where the actors look nothing like the model do fine, but NOW this is an issue? Why didn't this come up sooner? Why has it literally never occured before in other games?

They could've tried a little harder. Like Yuri actually has a pretty distinctive facial structure, they could've actually made Peter look kinda weird the way Yuri does and that would've at least fit the character better.

This dude just feels like they wanted someone who was vaguely in the same ballpark as Yuri but with more classical Hollywood features, but in turn ended up picking a face so generic it looks like Ansel Elgort and the kid from Ready Player One did the fusion dance. And he doesn't look like an experienced hero at all - I can't take that face seriously as a MENTOR.

What difference does knowing this exact detail make?
Couldn't they fix the sync without changing the actors? Its weird to me that the sync was so off because of the facial animation they needed to change the face altogether, why wasn't this an issue before they released the game on PS4?
It seems like a major change for minimal returns to me, I platinum the game and never once though to myself the game was taking my immersion away due to faulty mo cap sync.

You jump in technology. You have way more points now than ever. No they wouldn't know that before.

Man, if 90% of the people in this thread ever complain about anything that isn't life or death they'd sure be hypocrites

People were looking for any reason to shit on that game. They still do.

It's irrelevant because Spider-Man 2 is going to sell like gangbusters. It'll have no effect on the franchise and the game's popularity going forward.
Nobody is really trying to make the argument that the series will be less commercially successful as a result of the actor/model change.

If the third Spider-Man MCU movie replaced Marisa Tomei with Kristen Stewart and people were annoyed about it, I'm not sure why "Oh it'll make 500 million at the box office anyway, that's irrelevant!" would be a response that makes much sense.

This isn't a new story by new artists. They literally took the exact scenes from the first game and popped a new head on the body. It's easy to see why that is unsettling.

Once again, no need to be mean to anyone about, though.
Yes, but that's happened before in different games. Also even mid comics when artists switch things change. They have a technical reason and are doing this for consistency reasons. Would it be any better or worse if they only used the new face in MM and going forward? It makes sense to change it in the remaster to match.

Lol. The conspiracy theories around this are as lame as ever.

It's fine to not like something and also not attack someone personally for something.

Yup. Like I don't agree with their casting choice even a little bit but I'm not gonna bug Jstevenson or Insom or anyone else about it. I love those guys, even if they made a choice that kinda bothers me.

I know there might be some legitimate examples of companies in the past that aren't upfront with all the reasons for certain decisions, but it's so frustrating to see developers explain the reason for something pretty clearly, have no reason to lie (outside of this weird MCU conspiracy idea), and still have people be like "I don't believe you, what's the real reason"

There's nowhere to go from there. Do people want them to make up a reason that fits their imagination better?

I dunno this whole situation is just frustrating to watch.

Naughty Dog updated Ellie's model to match Ashley's face structure, and that still ended up looking like Ellie

Same goes for pretty much every other Uncharted character

I mean, even Lara Croft in the Tomb Raider games, despite receiving massive changes in her face throughout the series, she still looked like the same person

Couldn't they just remodeled the character a little bit? Without casting an entirely different person?

It's jarring

He does look younger, but a like teenager seems like an exaggeration. I feel like people have way too limited a concept of what people in their 20's, especially early 20's can look like if the reaction to this recasting is anything to go by.

The world is on fire.

"But don't politicize my video games! It takes away from the pure joy and escapism!"

Spider-Man's face is changed in a video game.

"The world is on fire."

That's in gen. And not always the case. You all continually think these decisions are made haphazardly. I just don't understand how you all continually think you just know better than developers at every turn. I know you wouldn't want people doing that in what ever you specialize in.
